Erich Wolfgang Korngold is most famous for his Hollywood film scores and his opera Die Tote Stadt. He also composed 40-plus songs, and this CD presents 36 of them. In fact, several of these songs appear in some Warner Bros. films, either in their form here, or as melodies he adapted. Five songs (opus 38) are dedicated to soprano Maria Jeritza and are set to English texts; they are catchy and easygoing enough to be called "popular." (One of them has words by Howard Koch, a contributing writer for the screenplay of Casablanca. On the other hand, we get "Drei Lieder op. 18," which are far more "modern." Indeed, there are moments of Alban Berg in them, although they never stray quite that far from tonality. What one takes away from this 76-minute recital disc is the variety Korngold was capable of and the short time he needs (the longest song is just four minutes) to set a mood and tell a story. Baritone Dietrich Henschel copes with the huge palette Korngold presents; he sings with great expression and can "simplify" his tone as the music demands. He's most comfortable in the middle of his range, but his frequent moves up to G and A flat are exciting as well. Helmut Deutsch is a fine pianist-partner. There's a lot to digest here; these aren't all to be played at once. But section by section, they are lovely and interesting. --Robert Levine

An excellent compilation of folk tunes and violin concerto adagios, played masterfully by some of the world's most revered musicians. Features modern pieces (Korngold, Barber), which are a personal favorite of mine.

My daughter is a violin student of 7 years and she has played 3 or 4 of these pieces for recitals. I bought the CD's so she could become familiar with the pieces as she was learning to play them. Now I find myself listening to the CD's almost every night when I go for my end of the day drive to relax. My favorites are the Mozart Concerto in G, the Mendelssohn Concerto in E minor and Beethoven's Romance in F on disc 2, but all the songs are exquisitely beautiful. I highly recommend it.

These CDs have the most incredible selections of music on them. Listening to the violins has enabled me to complete papers for my doctoral level classes without the usual neck aches. This is soothing, exquistie music for the soul! Lovely!!

Exquisite collection & performances, unbelievable value!!!.......2002-01-15
"Over 2 l/2 hours of the world's most beautiful music." These words on the cover are very close to true. What an incredible value this collection is!! So many of these compilations of this sort are cheaply produced, and those "greatest hits" collections are one trite piece after another -- after a while one runs screaming to the stereo to shut it off. However, this collection is top-notch, and the performers they chose are masterful musicians at the top of their game. Every selection is lovely, each one unfolding after the other in a sublime slide show of exquisite compositions performed by legends. This is TWO CDs of sparkling performances composed and performed by masters. There is not a bad selection or a piece of inferior quality in the entire lot.
The violin is an extraordinary instrument that, when played correctly, can pluck the heartstrings and stir the soul. It is played perfectly by each puppetmaster on each one of these wonderful pieces, and the experience of listening to this collection is an exquisite journey for the heart and spirit. I am of a mixed mind about von Otter, who tends to push every composer through the same style--very earnest, intense, with a push to every note, and sometimes too much of a slide into phrases. Here she hits the mark perfectly. She sounds as if immersed in Strauss's lavish, plush, self-inudlgent world. Korngold if anything makes that world seem austere, with his ultra-chromatic wanderings around the home key. To all of it von Otter responds with deep conviction, and I can't imagine anyone doing it better.
A wonderful selection of songs.......2001-07-17
Can anyone listen to this disc and wonder why Anne Sofie von Otter is so popular? From the opening of "Das Rosenband" to the waning tones of "Sonett für Wien" her voice will make you glad you bought this disc and it will make you want to listen again and again. This is not just hyperbole.
For anyone looking for something a little different, the Korngold songs will introduce you to a composer whose music is too often overlooked and shouldn't be. ASvO and Bengt Forsberg can take credit for turning this reviewer into a dedicated Korngold fan and I'm sure I won't be the last. The two songs from Op. 14 -- "Sterbelied" and "Gefasster Abschied" -- are just a tease and you'll want to hear the other two songs in this cycle, though for them you'll have to turn to their two-disc set "Rendez-vous with Korngold". "Alt-spanisch" was originally sung in an English version in the film "The Sea Hawk" and its simple and moving melody will stay with you for days. "Sonett für Wien" turns the piano into a full orchestra. In short, Korngold was a master of composing for the voice and Anne Sofie von Otter proves it. Don't miss this one.
an exquisite art!.......2000-10-03
Anne Sophie von Otter is a superlative singer, and one of the great recitalists of our time. This disc of late Romantic songs is but another confirmation of her exquisite gifts, combining true musicianship with vintage artistic taste. Central to the success of her recordings is her continuing choice of pianist Bengt Forsberg as her musical collaborator. These two artists perform together with uncommon empathy and understanding. The Berg jewels are the finest things here; von Otter's singing is as clear as a starry night. If you've never connected with Berg's music, take a listen to the Seven Early Songs; the 'Liebesode' and 'Sommertage' are spun with gold. Just marvelous in every way! Korngold's voluptuous art songs are in many ways a world apart from his overbaked orchestral music and operas, measured and cadenced with space and care. Von Otter's rendition of the 'Sonnet for Vienna' contributes mightily toward justifying whatever quasi-renaissance Korngold's music may be enjoying at present. This is just damn perfect art; it would seem impossible to be disappointed with this disc! Check it out!

The previous review is simply a gross falsification. I have been an obsessed opera fan for a long time, and Thomas Hampson is a truly special singer. He is not the possesor of the largest or most interesting voice, which he will tell you and indeed says so all the time. His commitment to text, his willingness to search out parts to fit his voice, and his dedication to art song make im invaluable to Americans as a ture Troubador. His light Baritone was ideally suited to Figaro and to Valentin and the art song he loves. He must stretch to sing Verdi, where his voice sounds dry and small but many singers have chanced Verdi at their peril, and his innate ablity to inhabit a song, here evidenced in Di Provenza overcomes fact that it is out of his fach. You misinformed opinion of Hampson is mean and strangly bitter. I love Opera, but I do not love every singer, which doesn't mean I debase their very artistic existance. I have seen Hampson live, and have loved him (in Thias) and somewhat disliked him (in Simon Boccanegra) As for him being pretentious, somwetimes I find him mannered, but always charming. SOmetimes Intellectualism can appear pretentious, but surely you wont hold an opera singer to the charge that he must be unintellectual. what a vitriolic review, please buy this Cd, it merits repeated listening to a true American SINGER,

The title of this album is an oxymoron. Or a sick joke. I can't decide. Sure he has made millions by luring the uninitiated listener into his web of deceit and conceit, but don't be fooled any longer. How fortunate Hampson has been to sing for and with great artists to shoulder his heavy load.
An Homage to a Great Artist.......2005-10-30
EMI is wisely creating a series of recordings to gather the moments of artists that showcase the very reasons they become so highly regarded. Usually these collections are produced late in careers or even posthumously, but in the case of THE VERY BEST OF THOMAS HAMPSON the artist is still one of the more active and premiere singers of our day. Yet while he doesn't still perform all of these inclusions, it is wonderful to have excerpts from various successful recordings to remind us of the artistry that Hampson represents.
The two disc set includes arias from operas: Rossini's 'Il barbière di Siviglia', von Weber's 'Euryanthe', Gounod's 'Faust', Massenet's 'Hérodiade', Bizet's 'Les Pêcheurs de perles' (in duet with Placido Domingo), Thomas' 'Hamlet', Verdi's 'Don Carlo', 'Il Travatore', 'Macbeth', 'La Traviata', and 'Falstaff', Korngold's 'Die Tote Stadt', and Wagner's 'Tannhäuser'.
But the rewards of a Hampson recording must include his impeccable career as a lieder stylist and on this recording are excerpts from Schumann's 'Dichterliebe', Schubert's 'Winterreise', Mahler's 'Rückert Lieder' and 'Das Lied von der Erde', as well as songs by Meyerbeer, Rossini, Grieg, Kalman, and Lehar. And very importantly there are examples of American songs that Hampson has always emphasized in his recitals. Works by Stephen Foster, and two extraordinary works with the brilliant accompanist Armen Guzelimian - 'An Old Song Re-sung' by Griffes and 'At Dawning' by Charles Wakefield Cadman - round out this fine survey.
Not usually a collector of such 'recombinations', for this listener this album is so very fine that it deserves the attention of all those who appreciate the artistry of Thomas Hampson - then and now. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, October 05

Mr.Hampson really gets the chance to showcase his wonderful baritone voice in this "Best of" collection which includes excellent selections from his various other CDs. I like the diversity of the selections featuring operatic arias,works from classical composers, and folk songs. For Thomas hampson fans, as well as fans of the baritone voice, this CD is for them.

Luckily, the current profusion of mezzo-sopranos doesn't leave one jaded to talented newcomers such as Angelika Kirchschalger. Besides looking like a fashion model, this young Austrian singer has a voice of such lustrous perfection that she would be as boring as Olga Borodina sometimes is were there not such an interesting musical intelligence at work. The program is all rarities and far less daunting than it appears. The Mahler songs are early, folk influenced pieces; though they have their dark edges, they aren't nearly as neurotic as some of his later work. Songs by his wife, Alma Maria Schindler-Mahler, reflect a highly adventurous musical spirit who had yet to find her individual voice. The Op. 38 Korngold songs remind us of the complex harmonic language toward which both composers were headed. Kirchschlager is close to ideal, and her German is flawless. More surprising, so is her English in the premiere recording of Korngold's disarmingly straightforward Songs of the Clown inspired by Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. Kirchschlager sings alternately with soaring rapture and hearty good humor. --David Patrick Stearns

I am not a musicologist, but this CD by Miss Kirscschlager makes me want to listen to it over and over, especially the Korngold songs as I am a big Erich Wolfgang Korngold fan.
Kirchschlager album is terrific.......2004-02-06
Angelika Kirchschlager recently gave a wonderful recital at Tully Hall in NY - all Schubert and Wolf. It was one of the best events of the year. Her musicianship, wonderful sound of her voice, and personality made this a truly memorable recital, and this disc is highly recommended, especially if you do not know this singer.
Lustrous singing.......2001-01-15
This is a wonderful CD in every way. The programming is unified yet uniquely interesting, with both the tried-and-true (Gustav Mahler songs) and the completely new (some Korngold and Alma Mahler songs). The recorded sound is excellent, with a perfect balance between soloist and piano accompaniment. Most of all, Kirchschlager's singing is simply outstanding -- she has a gleaming mezzo-soprano voice, and she is particularly good and idiomatic in the German-language songs, capturing the feeling of fin-de-siecle Vienna as few singers could.
Although I also like Kirchschlager's lullabies CD ("When Night Falls"), this is the recording I keep coming back to for repeated listening. I think I've played it over 50 times now!

The slithering idiom of early-20th-century Vienna dominates but never consumes Korngold's fluent lyricism, from the ingenuous Suite for Piano Left Hand and Strings to his gorgeous lieder. Anne Sofie von Otter cuddles her ravishing voice around the sublime "Songs of Parting," while longtime accompanist Bengt Forsberg shadows her every nuance. Her supple and pointed diction in the Shakespeare songs is an object lesson in how to sing perfect English, and this from a non-native singer. In the aforementioned Suite, Forsberg and friends don't match the tight-knit ensemble, glitchless intonation, and virtuosic profile that distinguishes Leon Fleisher's powerful version on Sony. They pick and jab at the fragmented yearnings of the Piano Quintet op. 15 yet never get Korngold's lopsided mountain to move. But you'll always return to the songs, for which texts and translations are included. --Jed Distler

Not to be missed.......2001-07-11
Listening to the songs (which are the chief attraction of this set) it's difficult to understand why Korngold is not more well known than he is, at least for his "serious" works (i.e. not film scores). As beautifully executed by Anne Sofie von Otter, it should be apparent that his songs are worthy to be ranked with those of Schubert and Strauss and should be performed and recorded as often. Of the German songs "Sterbelied" ("Requiem") and "Mond, so gehst du wieder auf" ("Moon, thus do you rise again") from Op. 14 and "Was du mir bist?" ("What are you to me?") from Op. 24 are the most beautiful, in my opinion. It's no wonder that Korngold reused their melodies in the chamber works included. The Op. 14 songs come off better in their purely instrumental guise than does "Was du mir bist?" which, compared to the perfection of its vocal form, is little more than a barely adequate transcription as the fourth movement of the Suite, Op. 23. Of the English songs, "Desdemona's Song" from Op. 31 is memorable for it haunting quality and heartbreaking simplicity.
While I would agree that the recording of the Suite, Op. 23, is better handled by Fleisher et al. on Sony (I have no comparison for the Quintet, Op. 15), in one respect I prefer this recording. In my opinion, the third movement "Groteske" requires a kind of wildness that this recording contains (perhaps inadvertently) while on Sony the playing is almost too controlled and thus sounds relatively restrained.
The chamber arrangement of "Mariettas Lied" from "Die tote Stadt" is an interesting curiosity and while once again the singing is exquisite, without its lush orchestral colour the music is missing something. Charming but a bit thin.
Ecstatic, Voluptuous Korngold.......2000-05-27
Perhaps the best introduction yet to the unique sound world of the great Erich Korngold, this varied, entirely enjoyable set will be loved by afficianados and newcomers alike. Don't miss it.

One of my favorite recordings.......2005-10-01
This recording is sublime!!! This is a compilation of Anne Sofie von Otter's favorite pieces. She chose such diverse and lovely music. Her diction is incredible. Her expressive voice moved me to tears in "A dio Roma," by Monteverdi. Her Handelian arias were also wonderful. My favorites from this CD are: all of the German lieder pieces, "A dio Roma" (Monteverdi), "Un sapin isole' se dresse" (Lahore), "I'm a Stranger Here Myself" (Weill), "In quali eccessi...Mi tradi" (Mozart), and "Non piu mesta" (Rossini). She is such an amazing Lyric Mezzo soprano. I love her so much. I also reccomend the Mass in C minor with Anne Sofie von Otter and Kiri te Kanawa, Cosi fan tutte with Renee Fleming (Mozart), and Ariodante (Handel). I strongly advise anyone to purchase this recording!!!

Some of the songs are a little too obscure for me, but I like her singing. However, I like Renee Fleming's singing better.

Anne Sofie Von Otter's mezzo voice is amazing!! Her selections of Handel's Ariodante and Rossini's La Cenerentola were amazing!! This CD is amazing and if you're a huge fan of Von Otter, you should get this CD!!
Amazing versatility and unparalleled emotion.......2004-02-09
OK, so I own almost everything she's done. I am particularly fond of songs/lieder and, having listened to a great number of both male and female song singers, I can find no singer in the same universe. The intelligence of her approach, the control of her vocal color and vibrato to match the notes and lyrics, the playfulness with which she approaches the music are without equal.
This is an interesting disc and I didn't buy it until recently since I already had a lot of it and prefer songs to arias. But it was quite a revelation. The Handel and Weill are wonderful. For something completely different, try the Delage "Lahore" Track 12. Eerie and beautiful.
If Track #11, Skogen Sover, doesn't make you cry you have no heart. It may be the most beautiful use of the human voice I've ever heard. Listen carefully to the way she changes vowel sounds in the word 'juninatt' throwing in the 'n' both times so you barely hear it and it doesn't disrupt the vowel color change. At the end, turn up the volume and listen to her fade out with no vibrato until she's barely audible, then add just a touch of vibrato as she finishes with the final 't' of 'juninatt'.
There may be better aria singers, with some voices better for some types of opera. But this woman's incredible versatility is well-reflected here and a delight to listen to. Even a Rossini at the end, gynmastics and all. Has there ever been a singer with a wider repertoire matched with such gorgeous emotion? Now, if we could only get the UK version of this disc, with more and different offerings, here on Amazon USA...
A great intro to this powerful, emotional singer. Take it as a starter and buy the full discs that have the tracks you like best. You'll be captivated and not disappointed.

Listen to this album!.......2005-06-09
I have only listened to a few some of the songs on this album, but it is evident to me that this is an exceptional album and as it has not yet been reviewed, I want to give it 5 stars so that others will know this one is worth listening to. Holzmair has a beautiful voice and a genuine feel for the music. There is nothing affected here, which to me is important in lieder. And Imogen Cooper's accommpaniment is exceptional. What a perfectly matched pair! (they even look great together; see the inside of the accompanying booklet). Try listening to track 18 "Spring Night". What eagerness in his voice and in the piano accompanyment!
"Over the gardens, through the breezes....I heard the travelling birds returning,...hearlding the scents of spring;...down below, the flowers are already opening....I could rejoice, I could weep: I cna hardly believe it is true! The old miracles worked again by the light of the moon...And the stars say it, and the grove whispers in its sleep and the nightingales sing it: she is yours! she's yours!"
Or listen to track #11 (Moonlight Night)...."And my soul spread its wings and stretched them wide and flew through the quiet land as if flying home.....". I only know Schubert (and why he never set Eichendorff to music only God knows as Eichendorff was apparently a contemporary and his poetry is as well suited to Schubert's ouvre as any) but am investigating Schumann. The other lieder I am not familiar with but I believe this CD is a great way to begin.

Moon, You Rise Again.......2003-10-21
It took me a while to come to grips with these works. I was already familiar with most of the 'Much Ado About Nothing' music so that was no effort. But I had some doubts about Gigi Mitchell-Velasco's singing and perhaps more importantly the way she was recorded - a bit remote perhaps. And the Stephen Gould singing wasn't entirely to my liking either - was it the singer or the music that didn't entirely appeal to me I wondered. I suspect it is the music but Mr Gould's timbre doesn't really help. However, as I listened to the CD a number of times my appreciation grew. After Mahler's farewell song ('Das Lied von der Erde') I wondered that Korngold could possibly have approached the same topic. And yet, for me, Korngold is the composer of self-denial - think of 'Die Tote Stadt' for example. And self-denial is often enmeshed with farewell, with leaving behind what you would really like to be able to grasp and hold. For me the song 'Moon, You Rise Again' struck a particular resonance with circumstances in my life. It is a simple piece so effective, and so affecting in both music and text.
I have developed an interest in composers of this period from reading Alma Mahler-Werfel's youthful diaries and exploring some her effective lieder. Previously I had explored Mahler's works and heard of his apparent suppression of Alma's compositions so it was of interest to me to see how well this woman could really write (assuming she actually did do the compositions). Alma Mahler-Werfel famously married several times after Mahler's death and one of her husbands was Franz Werfel, so it was of interest to see on this CD that Korngold set one of Franz Werfel's poems ('Prayer'). Korngold and Alma Mahler-Werfel were apparently friends, and Korngold did dedicate his violin concerto to Alma, so the links were definitely there.
It may take some time, but I suspect that the beauty and freshness of this music will be rewarding to explore.
NIce surprise.......2003-01-14
I didn't know that I liked Lieder until I started to listen to this CD. Ms. Mitchell-Velasco has a wonderful balance between emotion and precision which is well suited to the music.

Erich Wolfgang Korngold is most famous for his Hollywood film scores and his opera Die Tote Stadt. He also composed 40-plus songs, and this CD presents 36 of them. In fact, several of these songs appear in some Warner Bros. films, either in their form here, or as melodies he adapted. Five songs (opus 38) are dedicated to soprano Maria Jeritza and are set to English texts; they are catchy and easygoing enough to be called "popular." (One of them has words by Howard Koch, a contributing writer for the screenplay of Casablanca. On the other hand, we get "Drei Lieder op. 18," which are far more "modern." Indeed, there are moments of Alban Berg in them, although they never stray quite that far from tonality. What one takes away from this 76-minute recital disc is the variety Korngold was capable of and the short time he needs (the longest song is just four minutes) to set a mood and tell a story. Baritone Dietrich Henschel copes with the huge palette Korngold presents; he sings with great expression and can "simplify" his tone as the music demands. He's most comfortable in the middle of his range, but his frequent moves up to G and A flat are exciting as well. Helmut Deutsch is a fine pianist-partner. There's a lot to digest here; these aren't all to be played at once. But section by section, they are lovely and interesting. --Robert Levine

Henschel's range of expression and the sensuous tone of his voice make this a remarkable CD. The recording is virtually transparent. Of the 15 or so lieder CDs I've bought recently, this is my favorite. Very highly recommeded.
Songs that deserve to be heard.......2004-04-01
It's heartening to the Korngold fan to see that his songs are appearing more frequently. Anne Sofie von Otter and Angelika Kirchschlager, to name only two others, have done their part to make the songs of Korngold more familiar to the classical music lover and several of the songs on this disc will be familiar to those who already have their discs. It's interesting to hear and compare this repertoire sung by a baritone when one is used to hearing female singers perform it and the difference is both fascinating and pleasant. As an Anne Sofie von Otter fan I will always return to her recordings most frequently but that is no slight to Henschel, merely a preference. This disc deserves high praise both for the quality of the performances and for presenting even more of Korngold's magnificent music to the public. The only oddity is in Op. 38 which for some reason is performed in English when the original texts are German. The singing is still great but if you're used to the German the English may be a bit off-putting.
