The Crown of Thorns: Music from the Eton Choirbook, Vol. 2

Volume 2 of the Sixteen's Eton Choirbook survey is built around three settings of the Stabat Mater sequence depicting the Virgin's grief at the Crucifixion. None of the music itself reflects that grief--reflecting the sentiments of a sacred text in the music was a Renaissance idea that had not reached England by 1500. Rather, the music adorns the text--quite spectacularly, with flashy rhythmic interplay and divided voices (especially high trebles) soaring around each other. Harry Christophers does include two settings of English-language Passiontide texts--these have the somber tone you'd expect. The Sixteen continue the unfortunate habit of transposing this music up unnecessarily, but their performance is otherwise exemplary and well worth having. --Matthew Westphal
