Album Description
THE SHOCK OF THE OLD is a new-music meets original Baroque-era instrumentation convergence featuring the Common Sense Composers Collective and the American Baroque performing ensemble.

With a nod to Thomas Paine, the new-music crew, Common Sense Composers Collective collaborated intimately with American Baroque from the project's outset. This irresistable innovative strategy of well-pedigreed composers and performers developing new-music works together yielded a thrilling eye and ear-opening recording, joining John Kennedy's One Body (SFNM-0512)on the new Santa Fe New Music label.

A few moments into the opening bars of Belinda Reynold's exhilarating "CIRCA" and the essence of this joyous collaboration takes flight. Some of the individual works such as Dan Becker's "Tamper Resistant" are imbued with a Baroque-era sensibility, while others, such as John Halle's engaging "Spooks" are unapologetically modern, save for the instrumentation. A number of compositions weave seamlessly in and out of the Baroque and Modern worlds.

Santa Fe New Music proudly releases THE SHOCK OF THE OLD, and we can only hope that open ears and open minds greet this lively and intriguing music, as the Common Sense Composers Collective and American Baroque remind us that neither old nor new are what they used to be.

2 out of 5 stars Ugh.......2006-09-17

I was a listener for years, but after hearing the same act for the past 10 years I gave up on Howard. This older material has some of the early sparks that would ignite his career. The problem is that this cd of song parodies is so dated because it is in reference to current events of the time. Listening to it now is painful and not funny.

2 out of 5 stars Howard Stern is a sick man.......2005-08-13

He makes very mean jokes about disabled people the mentally ill and Aunt Jemima

3 out of 5 stars Early spark of radio genius revealed..........2000-04-29

Although I don't find the "Unclean Beaver" CD to be consistently funny, it does have it's moments, and pretty memorable ones at that. It also gives you a look inside the early comedy efforts of radio king Howard Stern and his trusted confidante Fred Norris.

Over half of the tracks are song parodies. My favorite is "I Shot Ron Reagan", where Stern, playing the part of John Hinkley, Jr., shakily croons his account of his 1981 assassination attempt of then-president Ronald Reagan in reggae fashion. Another good tune is "Baby You Can Rent A Car", with Stern as a pre-murder-trial O.J. Simpson beltin' out a satire of his Hertz Rent-a-Car commercials. Actually, I thought the OJ song was kinda retarded, but I laughed at it anyway.

The rest of the CD tracks are satires of classic TV shows. The one I like most is "Unclean Beaver Episode II", a raw and unbelievable hit on "Leave It To Beaver". In this episode, Eddie Haskell shares a snort of coke with Wally, then introduces him to... um... the Greek tradition of pleasure. I also enjoyed the TV parody track "A Family Affarce", where Uncle Bill- with the unwilling assistance of his manservant, Mr. Greek- molests the children left to his care.

I know it's probably wrong to find this stuff entertaining, but to tell you the truth, I really don't care. I'm a sick, insensitive schmuck who loves to laugh at other people's misfortunes. It makes me feel better about myself. So there.

`Late...

4 out of 5 stars hey its howard sterns album,so just buy it ....pronto!!! lol.......1998-10-06

if you are a true fan of howard, you will just blindly buy this album without question....so shut up, sit down, and listen.

All kidding aside, it's sort of like a weird al yankovic album. It's all song parodies. But remember, this was probably his first attempt at making a album, and it is not as funny as his present day radio show, but it is still entertaining. at least I tink sow.hehe

2 out of 5 stars Major Disappointment! :(.......2007-06-01

I am in total agreement with 'Raveric' on the quality. If you listen carefully you can hear the odd pop n' click and this tell me this album is nothing more than ripped off vinyl and released on cd. I was really looking forward to this cd but my electro mp3 collection sounds far superior. Why oh why did they give us the short (less than 4min) version of 'return of captain rock' but give us the FULL instrumental version??? This cd doesn't even include 'cosmic glide'. Thankfully i have a pretty good mp3 of the 12" but it would of been nice to have it included.

Now if only someone out there would release a double/triple cd set of full 12" versions of all the classic electro with studio quality!

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2006-07-03

one of my favourite's from early hip hop and electro day's along with Dr jeckyll+Mr hyde, man parrish,L.A dream team and the unforgettable sound of egyptian lover

2 out of 5 stars Great music YES, great quality NO.......2006-04-22

Without a doubt I love the music on this Captian Rock collection, but come on, with all the technology available, how hard can it be to remaster/restore the music in at least acceptable quality?

I bought this cd for replacing my own recordings on tape and original vinyl, only to find out that even my 20 years old tapes are in better shape than this cd. Oke, the dub-version of the "Return of Captain Rock" sound fine, but the (only 3:58 long) vocal version sounds like something played on My first Sony...

To make this long story short, a great collection with a very, very poor soundquality and not worth your hard earned bucks!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Motley Assorted Music.......2004-01-29

In this marvelous CD's liner notes, it has this line which this reviewer believes typifies the effort: "The results are a wonderful and motley assortment of pieces. We hope you enjoy."

I enjoy, and think many of you will too. This is combo of two groups collaboration, Common Sense Composers' Collective and American Baroque. New electronic devices and their capabilites combine (the motley) with baroque instruments in wonderful merger of fresh, exciting new sounds.

I like another reviewer rave over the 9 Miniatures work, especially cuts two and three, Slippery and Metoclopramide respectively named. There are hard to describe, but old meeting new in vibrant, synthesized way would only begin to come close.

Also, as Telemann fan, their treatment of him as silly putty in "Tamper Resistant" is delightful.

Try this. New possiblities musically are intriguing and fun listening.

    5 out of 5 stars Bravo!.......2002-07-16

Can one use words like "hot", or "rockin', to describe contemporary concert music? Well, when talking about The Shock of the Old, from the Common Sense Composer's Collective, you sure can. This is wonderful new music composed for and brilliantly played on historical instruments by the members of American Baroque, a dynamic, eclectic ensemble based in San Francisco. American Baroque definitely rocks! And sings beautifully, and swings...! They bring such joy and virtuoso musicianship to their playing that the heart of music, both old and new, is made accessible.

The pieces challenge the technical realities of the period instruments, creating an imaginative and innovative aesthetic. I especially enjoyed Marc Mellits' 9 Miniatures, which utilizes the ensemble to create a soundscape that evokes the diverse spirit of the musical past and present. The amazing Baroque flautist, Stephen Schultz, is particularly outstanding on Mellits' haunting Elegy for Lefty and John Halle's technically demanding Spooks. Katherine Shao's harpsichord playing is a revelation throughout; Gonzalo Ruiz has command of one of the purist sounds I've ever heard from a Baroque oboe; Violinist, Elizabeth Blumenstock, and gambist, Roy Whelden play with flawless technique and produce a string sound that runs the gamut of musical history. Am I delighted? Yes!

This is thoughtful, fun, ear-opening contemporary music that both challenges and warmly invites. It communicates and expands the possibilities. Bravo to all concerned with the project!

    5 out of 5 stars I love this CD!.......2002-07-10

    ...
An amazing bunch of musicians playing some amazing new (old!) music. I love baroque violin and harpsichord...I always wonder why composers don't work with these instruments and deconstruct these classical forms more often, so I really love this record. It is a brilliant concept and all the music is different and wonderful. I am a huge fan now of Common Sense Collective: I think they are a really energized and exciting consortium of artists clearly out to turn music on it's head...just put on the CD and let Belinda Reynold's piece CIRCA begin your day, swirling around your head with your morning coffee!! All the composers on this cd rock.

5 out of 5 stars Joy of the New in "Shock of the Old!".......2002-07-02

"I have seen the future of classical music, and it's name is...Common Sense???" Finally, something new and delightful in contemporary music! Common Sense has found a talented group in American Baroque to try some cross-cultural pollination that actually works! I'm particularly fond of the first track, Belinda Reynold's "CIRCA," and also Dan Becker's "Tamper Resistant"; it makes me want to go mutate some music- he could give Moby and Beck some original ideas... all beautifully recorded with "Baroque-a-delic" cover art for that real 60's (1760s, that is!) feel. A talented group of composers + talented performers + a creative concept = a UNIQUE TREAT...they also just got a great review in the Sunday "Datebook" of the San Francisco Chronicle ...I enjoyed their previous "Emergency Music" CD on Koch from a few years ago as well, which is why I was quick to check out what Common Sense was up to this time!
