Berlioz: Symphonie fantastique Op14

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
Sir Colin Davis's 1974 account of the Symphonie fantastique with the Concertgebouw Orchestra has ranked among the best since the day it was made: refined, sensitive, and full of passionate reverie, it's a high-voltage performance that never seems overdriven. Avoiding the tendency of many conductors to treat the work in episodic terms, Davis presides over a reading that is sustained by a firm sense of structure and argument. He elicits fine playing from the Concertgebouw orchestra, whose combination of chamberlike delicacy in the strings, characterful work in the winds, and brilliant brass is virtually ideal. The recording is superb--textures emerge clearly in a spacious setting, with good perspective. --Ted Libbey

5 out of 5 stars Take a look at the whole picture.......2005-01-02

This is an excellent performance of an overplayed Symphony. Despite some sluggish moments, the playing is overall as to be expected from Karajan and the BPO. I've heard Munch, Beecham, and Clutyens recordings of this piece of music, and to my ears, this one is up there with them, for sheer clarity and good sounding execution. Some might complain it isn't "the best" out there, and there indeed might be better versions, but try to find an orchestra and conductor that play like this today and you will face a near impossible task. The witches sabbath and 3rd movement are my favorites, and the added selections from the Damnation of Faust are played well, as well. A very nice intro to this piece, and a recording of interest for Karajan and Berlioz fans.

3 out of 5 stars Not Karajan's Best-try 1976 DG.......2004-10-20

This recording was made in the 1960's. Karajan re-recorded it in 1976 (available as part of a DG "Panorama" of Berlioz favorites). That is the performance to own. The execution is better, the sound has greater dynamic range, and the interpetation is more macabre. Although he doesn't take the 1st movement repeat, and doesn't use the optional coronet parts in the 2nd movement, I like the 1976 as much as the C. Davis version from about the same time.

4 out of 5 stars Hard to Believe.......2003-09-18

It's hard to believe that Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic didn't make a better performance than the account presented here. Karajan made one of the great mono recordings of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique with the Philharmonia for EMI in 1954 (see my review), but this stereo version, originally released in 1965, while not awful is certainly below the level of excellence that I'm accustomed to from this conductor and orchestra. Even at a budget price, it isn't a great value -- for that try Ormandy on Sony Essential Classics, or even better, Cluytens on the original EMI Seraphim Series (see my reviews of both).

1 out of 5 stars Not one of Karajan's high points.......2003-04-24

Few conductors are actually fully comfortable in all areas of the classical repertoire and Karajan despite his prolific recording career is no exception. The sound of the orchestra is essentially the same as in all Karajan/Berlin recordings of German repertoire. What Karajan fails to realize is that Berlioz requires a completely different approach, not least because of his unique orchestration and its demands on orchestral color, phrasing and ensemble playing. The BPO have proven themselves more than capable of mesmerizing performances of French repertoire under other conductors. But this recording is disappointing not only because of Karajan's failure to connect with the score, but also because of an unusual (for the BPO) amount of imprecise and messy ensemble playing and bad balancing.

4 out of 5 stars The perfect bells..........1998-10-08

Regardless of the very particular style of Karajan conducting the most well known works from seldom composers, in this recording he achieved the most in one of the best performances of the Berlioz's Symphony Fantastique.

The reason is simple: No other conductor but him could feel the overwhelming sense of the death that an artist lives when tries to suicide, and in his trial there are bells driving himself through a gateway toward his fatal destiny.

There could be thousands of bells used to perform this work, but once you "live" the sound of the ones Karajan use, all others are worthless.

Maybe this is not the finest version but it really has a highly interesting improvement in the last movement. Anyone who wants to listen the very sound of a Night of Sabath, must try this recording...

2 out of 5 stars There are better Markevitch recordings.......2003-04-29

I disagree with the other reviewer. While the Lamoureux was Paray's orchestra, it lacked the precision and sense of ensemble displayed by the Detroit Symphony in Paray's own recording of this work. The intonation is sketchy, the strings (cellos in particular) are not together and the brass lack differentiation of dynamics and instrumental color. This is orchestrally altogether an inferior performance. Markevitch himself made a truly magical recording of Op.14 with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1953 (also on DG) which rises leagues above the quality of this Lamoureux performance. E.g. in his Berlin performance, Markevitch creates such a magical atmosphere at the entrance of the idee fixe in the second movement that one really feels a woman of such stunning beauty has entered the ballroom as to make all heads turn. This kind of magic the Lamoureux players are simply incapable of conveying despite Markevitch's passionate direction. Why this and not the Berlin performance made it out of the archives and into the Originals series is beyond me.

5 out of 5 stars Historic and superb!.......2000-07-12

This Fantastqiue is one of the top four or five choices. For one thing, this was Paray's orchestra, and Markevitch doesn't try to hide the obvious influence of the Maitre still held by the orchestra when this recording was made (1957, and don't let the age deter you; the sound is excellent).

But there's plenty that's original. It's a white-knuckle account, full of Gallic flair, and the wind and brass virtuosity has to be heard to be believed. Just listen to the snaggly Lamoureux brass between your speakers as it goes off to the scaffold, get a load of the fizzly, hair-raising winds in dreams and passions. Markevitch, himself a Paris fixture who knew everyone and everything au courant, takes you through a psychotic vision much like Argenta does in his version, but with a lot more finesse, candor, and class. It's a truly "bad" trip that somehow makes sense, not a carnival house of horrors for the garconerie.

The Cherubini and Auber are more than mere fillers. These are old Lamoureux "curtain-raisers" that bring us a glimpse of the great tradition of Charles Lamoureux and the orchestra he founded. These are "favorite numbers" that allow old Parisians to nod knowingly at each other and experience the unique nostalgia of Lamoureux concerts, every Sunday, rain or shine, free to the public.

This is a rich and full reissue of historic magnitude that deserves to be in every serious musicologist/music lover's collection.

5 out of 5 stars Orquesta grandiosa.......2005-01-14

4 out of 5 stars An excellent Symphonie fantastique.......2000-01-24

This is one of my favorite Symphonie fantastiques. Ormandy approaches the symphony with a surprising amount of energy and conviction. The first movement, "Reveries; Passions", is particularly volatile, capturing the almost schizophrenic mood swings perfectly. The Ball scene has some dark undercurrents that I would not normally expect from Ormandy, but they work well. The Scene in the Country unfolds beautifully, though the rumbling thunder at the end too easily betrays its orchestral origins; I have heard other performances where you would swear it really is thunder! The March to the Scaffold is a bit too fast for my taste, and Ormandy does not play the repeat. I tend to like a slower tempo AND the repeat, as I feel it creates more tension and a more ominous feeling. The Sabbath Night is superb, with the Dies Irae theme coming forth with both power and atmosphere. I do have to complain about Sony's mastering though - they turn the final movement into four separate tracks, a practice I disagree with. All in all, most of my complaints are minor, and this is a very worthwhile performance. I appreciate Ormandy's willingness to treat the symphony as a symphony, a unified whole, and not an episodic work. Of course, one needs to also give credit to the Philadephians, whose playing is as wonderful as one would expect.
Dukas' The Sorcerer's Apprentice will forever be known as the "Mickey Mouse music" to millions because of its use in both Fantasia films. It certainly is a charming and exciting work, if nowehere near the level of Berlioz's masterpiece. Ormandy brings out the best in it.
Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain owes much to the Sabbath Night of the Symphonie fantastique. Indeed, it seems to pick up where the Berlioz left off. I have no reference recording, but I think the piece probably calls for more demonic energy and intensity than Ormandy gives it. It it still very enjoyable even if it is not the last word in interpretation.
The disc is recommended, particularly at the price.

This is the best version out there, and I've heard several, including the OOP Bernstein - you can't get better than this; not the most generous CD with 55 minutes and no coupling, but worth every penny.

3 out of 5 stars Very Fine...But Not the Reference Standard.......1999-03-30

It seems to be the consensus of music reviewers around the world that THIS is the recording of the Symphonie to own. I have to respectfully part with that orthodoxy. While Davis coaxes some very fine playing from the world-class Dutch musicians, the reading seems a little musty to my ears. The interpretation that gets the blood racing (and that's what this music is all about) is the 1968 Bernstein/NY Philharmonic [NOT his 1961 first recording and DEFINITELY not Bernstein's abominable 70's recording with the French National Orchestra]. Regrettably, this recording on Sony/Columbia is now out of print. The conductor and orchestra are in total synch on this potboiler and the audio engineering is excellent. The execution (particularly in the March to the Scaffold and Witch's Sabbath) is utterly hair-raising. If you can find this in the cut-out bins, GRAB IT! No finer recording has been made in the last 30 years.

            2 out of 5 stars About what you'd expect.......2000-07-31

I can't wax enthusastic about this exquisite china-shop version of the twisted sister of all Romantic symphonies. The fillers are fun. Big deal.

If you have to have Barenboim, at least take his Orchestre de Paris version that through all the scrape and scruff we get something resembling idiomatic performance and musician involvement and pride. I'll take the Chicago porcelain, though, to whatever that dinginess is that Barenboim got in Berlin: a neo-Freudian bathos and heave brings pictures of Rosellini's "La Nausea."

Go back to the thrilling, scintillating, and definitive Paray, Munch (all the versions have something remarkable), Argenta (pathologic), Markevitch (very twisted), Martinon (alternative cornet parts and double harps) or Monteux in San Francisco (not the unfortunate Vienna sessions). Unfortunately, I find all too often that those who rave about a production such as this CSO runthrough have never known the above were available or haven't listened to them in many, many years. If they would, they'd be bowled over by the richness of ideas and the undeniable drama.

And if you want a glossy, up-to-the minute sound fest with an involved and idiomatic performance of the old Fantastique, give an ear to Tilson-Thomas and the San Franciscans saluting Monteux and the great Berlioz performance tradition they've had running out there for over 50 years.

            5 out of 5 stars A Command Performance.......1999-05-15

This is definately a rare interpretation! The Chicago symphony has proven once again that they are dedicated to their pledge to break new ground in music performance. They do just that under the more than capable baton of Maestro Barenboim. Never before have I heard such a twisted rendition of an ultimately twisted piece. The precision of the winds astound me once again through their brilliance and clarity. The bold, and most definately beautiful tones of the brass, not only strike fear but command the attention of the listener. The strings combine with awesome resolve to give the feeling to the listener of absolute uniformity in musical intent and idea. I will indeed cherish my copy of this truly 'command performance'.
