Probably best for relatively "happy" babies.......2007-03-10

I bought this CD for my "fussy"/"colicky"/"high needs" newborn who started crying basically all of her waking hours at around two weeks of age. While this CD is very relaxing and was great at putting ME to sleep, it was not great at getting her attention. If your baby is crying and you are looking for a sure thing to calm him/her, I would HIGHLY recommend purchasing "The Happiest Baby on the Block: The New Way to Calm Crying and Help Your Newborn Baby Sleep Longer" (by Harvey Karp) and the companion CD - it has wonderful and unique "white noise" tracks that you can turn up loud in the car or at home and it WORKS!!

We brought this CD and our Bose Wave radio to the hospital and it was a blessing during my recovery from an emergency c-section! It is the most relaxing music that you will ever hear. Whether is soothed my son's transition from the womb to the world, I will never know. My husband and I still listen to it to relax-- I recommend this CD to anyone who has issues falling asleep (ages 0 to 100).

Hypnotic and sweet - a great pick for nighttime.......2006-09-21

This CD of soft, ambient, aerial sounding music (I personally can't distinguish any female vocalists, although it's possible that what sounds to me like sweet, angel-voice synthesizer music is actually someone singing) is a great one for bedtime and car trips with a fussy infant.

The swoosh-swooshing heartbeat/womb sounds are pleasant and gentle; they are also mixed fairly well with the music so that it doesn't sound overly womb-y or barely womb-y. They are also mostly on one channel, so if you want to increase or decrease the swooshing to taste, and your system allows for it, you can adjust the balance to this end.

I put this one on every night as I nurse my baby down (don't let anyone tell you "never nurse your baby to sleep" - that is what nursing is FOR, like, duh!) and half the time I fall asleep too, just from relaxing to the soothing sounds.

The CD is consistent all the way through - what you hear in the first five minutes is what you're going to hear for the next hour, so no need to worry about "getting into the groove" and then having it totally change on you. But if you ARE looking for something that has several different sounds, or a variety of music, this is probably not the one for you.

I wish I had had this one during labor, too. Highly recommend. (And please don't listen to the reviewer who referenced "Secrets of the Baby Whisperer" - that is an AWFUL book.)

what ever category fits the mood of the day, this album should prove to all the new-music and modern classical people that these avant metal-heads mean business. leaving the granite riffs of their usual outfits - Stephen O'Malley: Khanate, Sunn O))), etc., Aaron Turner: Isis, Old Man Gloom, etc., and joining with ambient-noise shape-shifter James Plotkin, these doom rockers create sophisticated tones and textures worthy of "serious" listening. but don't get me wrong, this sounds a bit amateurish - by track 5 it gets muddy, sloppy, lazy, loses focus, and runs out of ideas. on comes the fatigue of strong weed wearing off.

a valiant effort by all measures, but to new-comers to contemporary abstract music, there are much more seasoned, refined, and plain superior practitioners in these areas. dig, and dig.

P.S. to the reviewer below: please don't give something a 1 star because you were mistaking it for something else. that is stupid and wrong.

The REAL Lotus Eaters.......2005-07-23

OK, this needs more than a 3-star average, and would have one if some genius hadn't given it 1 star because it wasn't the record he thought it was. I wonder if he's also bought Kierkegaard's 'Either/Or' and given it 1 star because it turned out not to be an Elliott Smith album? (Just to clear things up completely, this is Lotus Eaters, not THE Lotus Eaters, so not even the same band name.)

Anyone who knows any of the work of Aaron Turner (Isis), James Plotkin (Scorn, OLD, Khanate, various excellent solo & collaborative dark ambient works) or Stephen O'Malley (Goatsnake, Sunn O))), Burning Witch, Khanate, Ginnungagap) will both appreciate and be surprised by 'Mind Control for Infants'. It does have some of the disturbing space of Khanate's 'Things Viral' and Plotkin and Mick Harris's 'Collapse'. But there are sweeter, cleaner sounds in here too. There's also an improvisational feel: not noodling 'improv', just the sense of spontaneous strokes and colours that are both impressionistic and EXpressionistic.

The title is very apt; these could almost be an infant's first impressions of the world, in the real stage before the imaginary or the symbolic (to borrow Lacan's psychoanalytic terminology) -- preternaturally wonderful, but also inexplicable and at times terrifying; an endless (and endlessly interrupted) succession of remarkable events without a reliable system for ordering or influencing them. Lotus Eaters show you something that seems to transcend subjective 'reality', but of course you have to abandon any hope of reducing it to the terms of means-end rationality.

You needn't subscribe to my babblings to appreciate this stuff. Turner, Plotkin and O'Malley are certainly three of the most talented -- and intellectually as well as aurally challenging -- artists in American music today. I wholeheartedly recommend 'Mind Control for Infants', along with all their other work.

ambient drone. the name is taken from homer's Odyssey, and strongly relates to the type of music here. the lotus eaters are mythological drug addicts who live on an island in ancient greek times. Odyesseus encounters them and has to drag his men off the island after they taste the lotus flower. this lotus eaters are somewhat a super group, featuring Stephen'o'Malley (sunn O))), khanate, burning witch, etc), Aaron Turner (isis, Old man gloom, etc) and James Plotkin (old, phantomsmaher, khanate, etc). the music it's self is totally atmospheric, very dark, but still pleasant to the ears. it's very relaxing, and very slow, but constantly interesting. the album is beautiful and one of my fave albums eva, totally unique, and the imagery you get from listening to it can be breath-taking. it's a wonderful journey of discovery and mystery. it's music to "zone out" to. once you've been caught by the lotus eaters you'll never want to leave.

Same Name Different Artist.......2003-12-10

If you are wondering if this is a new album of the 80s New Romantic group the Lotus Eaters, well you can stop wondering now because it is not!
Although Peter Coyle and Jeremy Kelly feels flattered for having their group name used, this album totally sounds different from the original's guitar-pop based sound.
This album is totally instrumental - ambient, new age, experimental - mixed to a degree that is not really pleasing to the ear.

If some pharmacist can bottle this CD music, they would make a million ! I was turned onto Music for Infants by my friend Leslie, whose mother's group all swear by it.
Try an experiment. Put on the CD at track 3. Let it play in your baby's room for about 20 minutes. I swear it will put your baby to sleep. I even put on track 24 and 15 to make her stop crying.This is probably the most effective music I have tried on my daugher.

A close second is Handel. Try listening to Water Music, but keep the volume down so the horns do not wake the baby. Finally, try getting one of those mini water fountains. They also work, especially with infant music. It creates a really stress free sleep atmosphere.

After being subjected to poor symphonic recordings, my baby son and I found this little jewel.The music is hypnotic! It is what James and I use during ourt calm moments.Thomas Schoenberger composes the most profoundly beautiful music for babies.You must buy this CD! James is mesmerized !

This CD is amazing. It is a series of short (5-20 sec) sound clips of real world sounds, such as babies cooing, children laughing, train whistles, animals, etc. We keep it in the car player permanently, and it works like magic with our twins, who are now 6 months old. They ALWAYS listen to it attentively. If they were fussing, they stop and listen. They find it both interesting and soothing. And for adults, the sounds are pleasant, sort of background noise, making it about a million times more palatable than the 20th consecutive playing of Goofy singing "There's a Hole in the Bucket."

Absolutely LOVED the CD. Thank you so much for sending it to us. It has been so fun to watch Zoe's responses to the different sounds. Even in her sleep, her expressions change while it's playing. This is an amazing compilation of interesting sounds. Since there is a wide variety of sounds, it does not get boring for the adults either.
Last week, I went to see my friend's 3-month-old baby at lunchtime and gave the Tiny Ears CD as a gift. The baby was very fussy when I got there, so I suggested that we try playing the CD. We played it and the baby enjoyed it for about 20 minutes or so while we could have lunch.

It was amazing to see the CD work. It kept the baby busy and interested while creating us time to have lunch.

This CD even kept ME interested. So many different sounds, some repeated to breed familiarity. You won't know what's coming next, and neither will your baby! Even sounds of mommy talking to a baby, but in the secret mommy/baby language. The clip of paper crumpling really bothered me, but apparently it was something that kept my attention when I was a baby, per my Mom's recollection. When is the NEXT one due out?

My daughter goes crazy for this CD........2003-11-20

This CD is full of incredible music that I personally love. But even more than that, Chelsea ( my daughter) is just hypnotized by it. She waves her hands and laughs when we put the music on. We use this CD and the baby Einstein videos before any other baby music product.
