Szymanowski: Harnasie (Ballet Pantomime) Op.55/Mandragora (Patomime), Op. 43/Etude For Orchestra In B

Harnasie is a choral ballet with folk inspired songs and dances that can perhaps be best compared to Stravinsky's Les Noce (The Wedding). It has a similar enlivening sense of rhythm and some really fresh and appealing tunes. The only reason it isn't more popular, no doubt, is because it's hard to find a chorus comfortable singing in Polish. But that's why God invented records, right? Despite being influenced by the likes of Strauss, Debussy, Ravel, and his countryman, Chopin, Karol Szymanowski (1882-1937) composed music of great beauty and an exoticism unique to himself. The two song cycles recorded here are more than tinged with orientalisms. The first, "Songs of a Fairy-Tale Princess," consists of just three songs and spans only nine minutes. Each is a coloratura gem that sometimes lapses into sheer vocalise, with the texts left behind. The East is filtered through French pastels. The lushness and decadence of a song like "Pearls of My Soul" from the "Love Songs of Hafiz" occasionally call to mind Zemlinsky and his like. That cycle is based on Persian poetry; their late-Romantic textures, the use of percussion and their expressive honesty are warm and tempting. The middle work is a ballet called "Harnasie," peculiarly scored for tenor, chorus, and orchestra. It was inspired by the folk sounds of the Tatra Mountains; this is forwardly propulsive, rhythmically jerky, occasionally Stravinsky-like music that perfectly suits the subject of a bride being willingly abducted on her wedding night by bandits in the Carpathian Mountains. This gripping, thrilling music is filled with harmonic and orchestral surprises and Sir Simon Rattle and the City of Birmingham Orchestra and Chorus obviously feel passionately about it. The performances are exemplary. Try this out-of-the-ordinary program; it's vastly entertaining, very rewarding, and comfortably other-worldly. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Thank You, Sir Simon Rattle!.......2007-02-09
I bought this one on faith, guided only by my knowing Rattle's recording of the Stabat Mater, Litania and 3rd Symphony (all Szymanowski) which I have loved for years. I was also curious about Harnasie which I knew by reputation only (his last major piece before the exquisite Second Violin Concerto). What a treasure! For the last week I've been totally addicted. I just ordered two more copies to give to friends.
I can't imagine finer performances of this music. Orchestra, female vocalist and Chorus are outstanding. The small tenor parts in Harnasie are a bit wobbly, "eccentric" - but in so colorful and exotic a piece I find this singing a curiosity that is not incompatible. The sound is hairraisingly good.
The music is so rich that I will listen to Harnasie skipping the songs, or at another time just the songs. Sometimes I'll listen to just a couple of the tracks over and over. Its music that requires close attention.
Karol Szymanowski should be much better known. If some of his earlier music shows its influences a bit obviously, what he wrote from the 3rd Symphony on is highly individual - a sound-world like no other.

For the classical generalist........2000-09-25
If you are looking to stock your classical musical shelves with a broad range of recognizable pieces, then this disc is for you. Otherwise, this album is not that great. Essentially it consists of the overplayed classical standards that happen to be Polish. If you are looking for a better introduction to modern Polish classical then try "The Varsovia Quartet play string quartets from Poland" (OLYMPIA OCD 328). And hey, if you find it let me know. That particular gem is out of print.

Product Description
This recordings selections exemplify many of the features found throughout the extensive but largely little known body of Polish violin-keyboard writing. The wide stylistic variety parallels the diversity within Polands cultural traditions shaped, in turn, by a long history of frequently changed borders and territorial makeup. Starting long before Polands culturally progressive Golden Age (mid 15th-16th centuries), these connections occurred through trade, religious, intellectual, artistic, marriage and other contacts. As a result, this music, like the rest of Polands culture, is generally western-oriented but sometimes includes distinctive eastern elements. Folk elements are often equally important. Most obvious is the use of Polish dances, e. g. the mazurka, but dance-related rhythmic figures, or their characteristic accents on normally less-strong beats or rhythmic subdivisions are often transplanted to non-dance settings. The historical association of ! Polish folk traditions with fiddles and then the violin itself (long Polands most popular folk instrument), is so close that Polands classical violin performance tradition reaching back to c. 1500 can also be considered to be an extension of her much longer folk practice. While the earliest of Polands many widely-famous violinists date from the 19th century, numbers of Polish violinists were already known for their high level of performing throughout Europe in the 16th century. Likewise, effective keyboard writing on this CD reflects a rich Polish keyboard tradition, sometimes with the composer being either a performing pianist ( like Chopin and Paderewski) or able to play the instrument with a high degree of accomplishment (Bacewicz).

Customer Reviews:
Why Isn't This Wonderful Music Better Known?.......2006-08-18
As David Hurwitz says in the capsule review on this page, there is no compelling reason why Harnasie isn't heard more often in concert--or recorded more widely, for that matter. The first time I heard it, I was blown away. Here was a composer writing music that was clearly indebted to the ballets of Stravinsky, Bartok, and maybe Prokofiev, and yet Karol Szymanowski had created a work that was not merely a pale imitation but an exciting, exotic thing unto itself. With its part for chorus and tenor solo, Harnasie is unlike any of its antecedents, including "Les Noces" and "The Miraculous Mandarin," both of which use voices, of course. No, with its languid Eastern-sounding rhythms and orchestral color, Harnasie (which debuted in 1935) looks back more comfortably to Impressionism and late Romanticism than do Stravinsky or Bartok in their most modernist ballets. Based on actual folk melodies from the Tatra Mountains of southern Poland, Harnasie is a wonderful bit of latter-day musical nationalism.
Mandragora (1920)--with its lighter scoring and greater reliance on individual instruments (especially the winds) to provide color--is intriguing as well, though it is not on quite the same plane as the remarkable Harnasie. But especially if you aren't familiar with Szymanowski, you'll probably be floored as I was by the quality of invention in this music.
The Etude for Orchestra is just a makeweight, orchestrated, as it was, not by Szymanowksi himself but by Polish conductor Gzregorz Fitelberg. Still, it is a pleasant piece worth adding to your collection.
The performances are entirely idiomatic and played and sung well by the Polish State forces. The recording is a bit distant and bright--probably a function of the hall--but if you crank it, it will give very good results. All and all, this disc is a great introduction to one of the twentieth century's most undervalued composers.
