Vaughan Williams: Symphony No. 2; The Lark Ascending
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
André Previn recorded this symphony twice, the first time around for RCA with the London Symphony Orchestra. That was, and is, a very fine performance, but this one is finer still. His tempos have slowed somewhat since that first version, but the truth is that you'd never notice unless you listened to music with a stopwatch. Vaughan Williams said that of all of his symphonies, this one was his personal favorite, and it's easy to understand why. The music has a very personal tunefulness and vigor, while the orchestration has a subtlety that clearly reflects the composer's period of study with Ravel. If you don't come away from this excellent performance thinking that the slow movement isn't among the most beautiful pieces of music in the universe, then listen again. --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:
A regular listener's impression.......2006-03-24
I am not an expert in classical music, but have always loved the string instruments. I bought this CD for relaxation (as the title implies) and to help me focus on writing a thesis. I was torn between this CD and the Cello for Relaxation. I am pleased with my choice. My favorites are track #2 and #10 (listen to the samples through Amazon) - I usually play these two on repeat. My least favorite is track #7 because it sounds like a piano dominated movie soundtrack.
Although I wish I could have exchanged some of the tracks for others, I think this CD was worth the money and is a nice mix for those of us who don't know specific composers by name or who want a good sampling.
VIOLIN.......2005-09-10
The selection of music was a good mix and pleasant in listening to them.
The choice of orchestras and conductors are also very well selected offering very good variety in the similar music mood.
My two long time favourites "Meditation" and "Salut d'amour" were very well played in the right tempo and instrumental arrangement.
The recording quality is good offering both clarity and defination in the recording.
Everything remembered and wanted on strings.......2003-10-16
To me, it is an extraordinary combination demonstarting the old world beauty and timeless artistry of the violin.
It will take you back to everything good remembered, and forward to everything good ahead of us.
Absolutely Wonderful.......2000-06-16
The music on this cd is so beautiful. It is perfect to listen to when you want to relax.

We all experience many states of consciousness, from ordinary waking and sleeping states to extraordinary states in which we are more at peace, particularly aware, or unusually creative. Each state has a unique pattern of brainwaves that can be mapped and measured. Brainwave Symphony uses of inaudible pulses of sound, based on these brain maps, to trigger your brain to produce the state you want to experience.
Combining this powerful new recording process with carefully selected works of Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, Bach, and other masters offers a beautiful and unique listening experience as well as a powerful tool for personal transformation.

Customer Reviews:
Took a nap during labor.......2007-01-16
I used the first CD in this collection (Alpha) to assist me during the labor and delivery of our daughter. I put it on our ipod and listened to it over and over during the labor process. I actually managed a light nap during active labor and had very little pain throughout the process. It that doesn't tell you that it keeps you relaxed and able to meditate, I don't know whatelse might convince you. The recording is great, the music lovely, and it does what it claims to do. I highly recommend it!
Awesome!.......2006-03-17
These really work! Ever wonder why listening to classical music may make you more up-tight than relaxing you? Here's the reason...
Induces great relaxation, pair with noise-cancelling headphones and sleep on plane........2005-12-30
So far I have only really used the relaxation CD, which works amazingly well. I have been flying more red-eyes lately in part because I know I can sleep on the plane from as soon as I get on. However, I have always slept pretty well on airplanes!
I keep forgetting to try out the rest of the CD collection.
Recommended for first rate relaxation and sleep!.......2005-06-06
These cds sound like simple classical music, but they do indeed assist you to enter different states of mind. For best effect, wear stereo headphones. But even without, you will find it easier to relax, sleep and meditate. If you don't like classical, the Brainwaves Suite has a new age/environmental sound.
Worth the listen.......2004-10-17
My curiousity was well rewarded when I first listened to these four CDs. The symphonic music is seamlessly recorded, accented with tone notations that are easy on the ear and peaceful on the mind. This set is at the office, on the iPod and the home computer, and loaned to others on a regular basis. They have flavored prayer services and supported pastoral conversations. Make good presents, too. Worried about subliminal suggestion? Well, if clearer thinking and thoughtful reflection is subliminal thinking, then you will get the message each time you listen to these recordings. Other recordings by Dr. Thompson deliver just as these do.

VW Can't miss.......2007-04-01
It would take a lot of effort to make these works anything but wonderful to my ( untrained) ear. I have other versions of Symphonies 3 & 5, Tallis, and Lark, but am not that familiar with the rest. I bought the CD set just to hear them. VW's music goes straight to my soul, perhaps because I was born about 40 km ( 25 miles ) from the composer. These works evoke instant nostalgia. Haintink, the orchestra , soloists, sound fine. I particularly enjoyed Ian Bostridge.
Vaughan Williams the Great European Symphonist.......2004-12-15
2004 Has been a good year for Box Sets of Vaughan Williams Symphonies. Best of the bunch is this one from EMI with Bernard Haitink conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Do not be put off by the lengthy gestation of the project, over 16 years between 1984 and 2000, there is a consistency of interpretation, performance and sound.
Haitink's first recording in the set of the 7th Symphony, the Sinfonia Antarctica is his manifesto. He takes Vaughan Williams out of the cosy world of 20th century British music and the interpretive shadow cast by Adrian Boult and places him in an ongoing tradition of European symphonists. Haitink revels in the richness of the symphony's sound worlds and in the romantic heart which he finds in them all. These are rich, big boned interpretations. Nowhere more so than in this 7th Symphony, from the episodic feast of the first movement onwards, and there is surely no recording with a more appropriate acoustic.
The First in the cycle , `A Sea Symphony" is startling, as conductor, orchestra and singers burn a new way to the heart of this huge work with a searingly intense first movement.
The Second, A London Symphony has many fine recordings. Here the louder passages are brash, boisterous and thoroughly urban. Vaughan Williams loved city life and would surely have approved.
The Third, A Pastoral Symphony is one of the most striking reinterpretations here, and perhaps the hardest to take for traditionalists. Boult's mystical manipulation of blocks of chords with solo instruments floating above them is replaced with lyrical argument.
The furies at the heart of the Fourth Symphony are set free to great effect, as they are in the Sixth Symphony. Haitink excels in the demonic dance music in both symphonies and the jazz elements in the Sixth are enthusiastically articulated
If the interpretation of the Pastoral Symphony is striking, that of the 8th is a complete transformation, and one that convinces. No longer is this a small symphony, here it is the considerable utterance of a master.
The Fifth symphony is its radiant self, but the questions that also inhabit the score are welcomed, giving this performance light and shade.
The Ninth Symphony, sometimes considered a difficult work sounds like a natural summation of Vaughan Williams musical journey. It is a suitable epitaph, autumnal but radiating vigour.
There are a number of filler works here, like the Symphonies some are radical reinterpretations. I am not convinced by this Variations on a Theme of Thomas Tallis. In The Lark Ascending the programme is forgotten and it becomes a one movement concerto with a continuous violin line.
Haitink's interpretations are not for everyone. If you want modern a modern equivalent of Boult with good digital sound choose the Vernon Handley Set on Classics For Pleasure. That also has the benefit of a more generous selection of extra works. If you want to hear exciting modern performances in exemplary sound snap up this bargain box.

Customer Reviews:
One of those Collection CDs that Merits Adding to the Library!.......2006-09-24
Often pasted together excerpts on the basis of a theme or a specific artist can be annoyingly disjointed. This is an exception to that rule. While many people appreciate the majestic symphonies by Ralph Vaughn Williams, there is a larger audience waiting to be introduced to one f the masters of British melody. Here is a selection of some of the more moody but eloquent works by a great composer too often dismissed.
The CD collection of 'Soft Sounds' is divided among several groups. Works on the collection include performances from the New Queen's Hall Orchestra (Barry Wordsworth, conductor), Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields (Sir Neville Marriner, conductor), and the London Philharmonic Orchestra (Sir Adrian Boult, conducing). These fine orchestras survey 'The Lark Ascending, romance for violin & orchestra' with a sensitive Hagai Shaham as soloist, 'Fantasia on Greensleeves, for harp, flute & strings', the Oboe Concerto in A minor' with Celia Nicklin soloist, the 'Lento' from 'The London Symphony', the 'Concerto grosso for strings' (Sarabande), 'English Folk Song Suite', and the much loved 'Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, for 2 string orchestras'.
There are no attempts to connect these works except through the concept of 'soft music' and there are individually finer performances of some on other recordings. But for a soothing, tranquil hour of gorgeous music to tame the savage world, this is one of those CDs that will serve the listener well - and hopefully increase Vaughn Williams' audience! Grady Harp, September 06
Beautiful!.......2004-02-19
"The Lark Ascending" is one of my all-time favorite pieces, and I must say that Ralph Vaughan Williams is amazing after listening to this CD. "Fantasia on Greensleeves" blew me away.
Wonderful music.

Beautiful Selections.......2002-03-22
I'm a Vaughan Williams enthusist and I find that this CD has many (not all, of course) of the soft and beautiful orchestral works of Mr. Williams. The quality is excellent. "Fant on a Theme by Thomas Tallis" is one of my favorite pieces of work by Williams, however, I didn't like Mr. Wordsworth's interpretation of this piece (in my opinion, the best interpretation is by Leonard Slatkin, which I suggest you buy). All in all, this is a very good CD and I highly recommand it.
Good if not for the oboe..........2001-03-19
This recording features wonderful renditions of many of Vaughan Williams' most heralded compositions. The Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis is one of the best I've heard, as are most of the other pieces on this CD. However, the (incomplete) Oboe Concerto is of mediocre quality. Being an oboist, I am naturally critical of oboe playing, but I must say that at times even an untrained ear can discern the utter lack of taste that went in to playing the wonderful concerto, which I much enjoy playing myself. A good CD to help people come to love Vaughan Williams, but don't buy it for the Oboe Concerto - you'll be wasting your money.
I am so glad I bought this album!.......2000-11-04
I bought this album because it had two pieces I acutally knew the names of (Lark Ascending & Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis) and adored, never thinking I would also come to love the other pieces. Well I did and now am on a search to find more good works by Vaughan Williams! This is one of my most played cds and still gives me shivers with each listen :-)

Buy this for The Lark Ascending Alone..........2005-01-23
The rest of the performances on this album are great, but the real gem here is Barry Griffiths solo on The Lark Ascending. Absolutely wonderful musicianship...this is a piece that relies entirely on the ability of the violinist. A beautiful interpretation.
Crisp Version of "The Lark Ascending".......2004-02-21
Besides Symphony No. 2, this album also contains "The Lark Ascending" of which I am an avid collector and fan. Among the versions of "The Lark Ascending," this version has a great deal of merit. Of course, it is difficult to proclaim any one of them the best because the piece lends itself to many beautiful interpretations. That said, it seems to me that "The Lark Ascending" can be performed as a lush, romantic piece where the background orchestra really captures center stage with the flourishes of the music. If that is the kind of performance you are looking for, this version is not it. However, "The Lark Ascending" can equally be performed where the violin soloist stands out very distinctly and never gets lost against the accompanying orchestra. If that is what you are looking for, this version is it. Telarc's digital recording especially helps to make the violin soloist stand out in relief, producing a delightfully crisp version V. William's "The Lark Ascending."
...Soaring.......2002-12-01
This recording of Andre Previn conductingVaughan Williams Symphony No. 2 "London" originally came out in 1987 and is in my opinion the best recording to come out. Upon listening to the "London" Symphony, Monet's London impressionistic paintings come to mind and may of been an origin to this work, or perhaps it was a counter part to Delius "Paris" Symphonic poem. Vaughan Williams had lived in London for some time and that reason alone would be the obvious influence. Vaughan Williams never made any notes on what each movement might suggest, in how London would appear to him in his music. By the suggestion of H.C Colles, this is how each movement would depict London.
1. Protrays daybreak by the river Thames, with the chimes of Big Ben striking half hourly...a very slow and meditative piece of music.
2. A cold damp foggy late November day in the Bloomsbury area, an old musician playing his fiddle outside a pub.
3. A lively Saturday night in the poor quarters of London, all the noises resembling a street fair.
4. A hunger march for those who are cold, hungry and not able to get work. The movement ends as how the first movement begins with the slow flowing waters of the Thames.
No Vaughan Williams collection would be complete without the very beautiful pastoral, romance for violin and orchestra "The Lark Ascending".
Incredible, not flawed, recording........2000-07-27
I cannot disagree that it's hard to find one volume level withwhich to listen to the entire recording. I first heard this piece at aconcert and one of the things that struck me about it were the drastic contrasts between peacefulness and quiet at one time and near violence the next. This recording really makes that apparent, and although it may be uncomfortable to the listener, perhaps that's the way it should be. It was, after all, written around WWI--who knows, but it just may contain World War related commentary. The second movement is incredibly beautiful. It gets loud there, too, but climactically so, and you probably won't want to turn it down. I don't really think engineering went wrong here. It's just the way the piece is. To record it with the soft parts louder and the loud parts softer would be to rob it of what it tends to evoke--surprise, dramatic contrast, beauty juxtaposed with something unsettling.
A great performance marred by bad sound.......2000-03-27
This is a cd that it's very difficult to rate. As a performance it's marvelous, one of the most impressive releases from Previn , always a perfect interpreter of RVW and British music in general. The "official" Amazon review says it perfectly. The problem is the sound which is, in my opinion, well below Telarc's standard. The quality of the sound is not bad in itself, but something must have gone wrong with the engineering. The dynamics, in fact, are incredibly exaggerated: for example, if you pump up the volume at the very beginning (ok, I know that the music has to gradually rise from pianissimo, but if you don't do that you won't hear anything for several minutes! ) then the big orchestral outbursts will result unbearably loud and coarse. I' ve never been able to find a volume level good for the whole cd. I have the other, equally splendid Vaughan Williams/Previn/Telarc (the Fifth), and that has no similar problems, so it's either a bad technical act or a somewhat damaged cd that I bought. (how, though? Somebody had a different experience?) All in all , it's a real pity....

This disc must be intended for insomniacs; it has that three-in-the-morning feel. The single movements featured are for the most part well performed. And some are decidedly off the beaten track, like Wojciech Kilar's Death and the Maiden (no relation to Schubert's) from the soundtrack to the movie, Paulina's Secret. And we also get English horn player Thomas Stacy doing the solo from the slow movement of Dvorák's New World Symphony with the New York Philharmonic. Also, there is violinist Tasmin Little and the BBC Symphony in a beautiful, dewy performance of The Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams. -- Gwendolyn Freed
Customer Reviews:
Haunting, Atmospheric, and Beautiful.......2006-06-15
Every time I find myself awake past midnight, I listen to this CD. It does indeed have that "three-in-the-morning feel". I'm not a classical music buff but every piece on Night Tracks is well-chosen and played beautifully. No matter I stressed out I may feel, this CD never fails to relax me and fill me with peace and tranquility --- I can't recommend it highly enough. The album cover is striking and moody.
Not your ordinary tonal bubble bath ..........2005-10-01
I love this recording for its thought-provoking selections. I wouldn't suggest reading while you listen, you'll get too distracted. Maybe a long soak in the bath and a nice glass of wine. It's great for thinking things over. If I have a criticism, it's the odd themes from Dvorak, Copland, Vaughn Williams and Verdi. Playing just a taste of a theme from something doesn't satisfy. But the Bach, Kilar, Espere and the rest are wonderful.
The Best overall stress reducing music cd ever!.......2005-01-17
This is by far one of my favorite cd's to listen to at the end of a long day. Especially in the winter months curled up by a fire and a good book.
Only problem is..........2005-01-04
I always fall asleep by the third song. It is so relaxing and wonderful in assortment.
Wonderful and Relaxing........2003-01-17
Truly one of the best collections of relaxing classical music. A must have for couples when the kids are gone, or just some quiet time alone. Soothing to the mind, body and soul.

Customer Reviews:
Dark but radiant.......2003-04-10
I dont know how many performances of the Tallis Fantasia and the Lark Ascending are around at the moment, but these two are among the very best. The Tallis is possibly the finest since Barbirolli (but maybe not quite so overwhelming) and Tasmin Little's Lark probably the loveliest since Hugh Bean's. So even if you have other versions, don't hesitate. Both are warmly recorded.
The sixth is also a very fine performance. Its a dark, angry work for three of its four movements (with only the one "big tune") but a more mystical, visionary, questioning epilogue. Davis, the BBC SO and the Teldec engineers rightly give the symphony a taut and urgent performance and recording, which works particularly well in the epilogue though you may find it too analytical in the earlier movements.
All three works are distinctively performed and recorded and their juxtaposition makes this a disc which is even more than the sum of its very good parts.
