George Lloyd: Symphonies 1 & 12
Editorial Reviews

These days, writing positively about the music of Lloyd (b. 1913) can get one pilloried. Some say he's too Romantic, too accessible for our modern (and presumably sophisticated) tastes. You be the judge. This disc has works that bracket his career as a symphonist. Symphony No. 1 (1932) has an Edwardian spirit, glancing backward to turn-of-the-century England. Symphony No. 12 (1990) has many of the same rounded edges as the First Symphony and the same variations-on-a-theme strategy. But in it you can clearly hear what he abandoned along the way and what he kept. This is an excellent introduction. --Paul Cook

I was very pleased with this product, my sister recently got married and I was responsible for the music.... I am happy that I made this selection, everyone was happy with the music chosen for the ceremony, I would recommend it to any one looking for wedding music
A wedding minister's review.......2000-01-16
I just love this album. I am a wedding minister and many couples ask me about music for their ceremony. I am happy to recommend they buy this album for a wonderful selection of wedding music both traditional and contemporary performed by orchestras, keyboardists, harpists and others including a lovely soprano. One disc is traditional wedding selections and the other is contemporary. The selections are arranged in the order of a ceremony with choices for each part of the ceremony. The CD would be appropriate to use in a wedding if live music is not planned. I plan to add a link to this site from my website just so couples can check this album out for themselves.

The alpha and omega of George Lloyd.......2001-10-17
This disc contains George Lloyd's first and last (12th)symphonies. Unusually for this composer, they are both in one movement, following the scheme: Introduction (ABA) - Variations - Slow -Fast.
Lloyd writes that he kept his 1st symphony (1932) when clearing out some of his early works as he was intrigued by its form and thought it had a youthful liveliness that he hoped would cover some of its defects. Elgar seems to haunt some of the material but the melodies are, on the whole, unmemorable. The joins are rather obvious and there is a lack of a real sense of flow and progression. It is not without interest, but is a pale forerunner of the things which were to come.
Between the 1st and 12th symphonies lie the experiences of a sometimes tragic life. The terrible happenings of the war left him mentally broken for a long time and he gave up composing to take up market gardening. The muse eventually took him again and a series of very fine works flowed from his pen. These were to remain unperformed as the musical establishment deemed tonal music passé. It was not until the late 1970s that interest in his music rekindled, mainly as a result of the fine series of recordings by the Albany Record company.
The 12th (1990) returns to the single movement form of the 1st but is almost double the length. The introduction is in ABA form and the following four variations are based on both A and B. This time Lloyd is in full control of the material, exploiting all the resources of the orchestra. The adagio is a full-blown slow movement in all but name. Gentle and serene in mood, it fits well with Lloyd's purpose to write 'something more relaxed' after the drama of his previous symphonies. The final allegro begins with some anxious, slightly nightmarish mutterings from the strings and the scary mood continues for a while. Jollier music follows but the scary stuff keeps threatening to replace it. Gradually things become peaceful and in an ending of great beauty, reminiscent of some of Bax's symphonic epilogues, the symphony comes to a heart-easing conclusion.
The recording is good although the playing of the Albany Symphony Orchestra, under George Lloyd, has a few rough edges. The musical notes are also by the composer. There is a photo of him, resplendent with his to-die-for hair, looking 20 years younger than his age.

Product Description
The audience at the Troy Music Hall was in for a treat the night of March 30, 1990: George Lloyd, whose Symphony No. 11 had been premiered with the Albany Symphony to rapturous acclaim a few years earlier, was going to conduct both his earliest and latest Symphonies. The First was written in a burst of inspiration after he turned 19 and it was first performed in November of 1932, with a second performance a year later. Then the work was revised twice, and untouched until the 1980s, when Lloyd deemed it worthy of revival. A wonderfully romantic, tuneful work, it abounds in youthful energy and not only sounds robustly British but even shows hints of the great Italian opera composers both Lloyd and his father had a passion for (the spirit of The Barber of Seville can be felt in the final sections). The Twelfth Symphony, commissioned for the Albany Symphony, would be his last work in the series. Like the Symphony in A, the work is in a single movement consisting of three continuous sections. Youthful abandon has been replaced by a soaring, heartbreaking lyricism and a sense of drama reflecting the long, often frustrating artistic life Lloyd had, but the work also revels in the kind of victory and resultant calm one achieves late in life. The original CD release, with engineering by the renowned Tony Faulkner, has been a favorite demo disc for years, but the full glory of this music comes out in this SACD remastering.
