Evgeny Kissin is one of the best young pianists on the concert scene, but this is not his best recording. Both of the Haydn sonatas are on his highest level, but Kissin plays them as though he weren't fully aware of their expressive content--he gets the notes out there with brilliance and flair but with insufficient nuance. The Schubert Sonata, a small tragedy and a milestone in his development, is more expressive here, but still not within miles of Radu Lupu's classic recording (regrettably out of print.) Try Crow (Bridge) for the full impact of this magnificent music; for the best Kissin, check out his RCA Chopin recordings, which are extraordinary. --Leslie Gerber

This is a lovingly-presented and very touching recording. Solo piano works by such composers as Kabalevsky, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Schumann, and Ravel come together in this collection intended to promote restfulness and calm in both children and adult listeners. With Carol Rosenberger's gentle playing, it succeeds marvellously. This disc is absolutely ideal for bedtime or times of quiet reflection. It might serve well in the car during traffic jams, too. Rather than just throwing together performances packaged on a theme (as a number of record companies are doing), Delos and Rosenberger seem to have tailored the interpretations to achieve the desired musical goal here. The liner notes have a lively section just for young readers. --Gwendolyn Freed

"Real" classical music for little ones.......2003-02-27

I bought this CD for my elder son when he was tiny; he listened to it nightly (and often for afternoon naps), and his little brother is continuing the tradition. What I like best about this compilation is that this is REAL music - real Brahms, Mozart, etc - and not watered-down versions or arrangements of the classics (like the vast majority of "classical" compilations on the market these days). (I suppose I am just a crank about this, but I grew up listening to real music, and I want my kids to do the same.) The performances are gentle and understated - not what you would want in a concert, but just right for sedating a small one.

This CD is just wonderful for babies and adults and children. It has a good blend of music to introduce children to beautiful classical music. I think that the playing is just superb.

An almost perfect combination of selections for relaxing background music, which is played frequently as our dinner music.

I would have appreciated a little less "electronic doctoring" as some notes (especially the lower range) don't sound quite "true", but then again it could be my ears!

Anyway, am delighted that it does what it was designed to do...provide an enjoyable time of relaxation. Thanks.

Beautiful bedtime music for babies.......1999-01-04

This CD was given to us as a gift when our daughter was born and we always play it when putting her down for a nap or to sleep for the night. When we travel, we take it along to ensure that she will fall asleep as easily on the road as she does at home.The music is absolutely lovely and very soothing for infants and adults alike. We even ordered a second copy in case we were ever to lose or wear out the first one!

This is one of the most peaceful, soothing and beautiful CD's I have ever heard. I think it would put you or your baby to sleep every night. The music selection is wonderful and the artist has a beautiful technique on the piano. I loved it.

Fantastic Fournier.......2004-02-16

On this 4CD EMI Import, the great cellist Pierre Fournier performs a variety of orchestral and chamber recordings, recorded primarily in mono from the 1940s and early 50s. There are three orchestral works -- Haydn's 2nd Concerto (Kubelik/Philharmonia, 1951), Schumann's Concerto (Sargent/Philharmonia, 1956 in stereo), and Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations (Bigot/Lamoureux, 1941). Disc two, and half of disc three, contain Beethoven Cello Sonatas with the great Artur Schnabel, while the fourth disc features a variety of pieces, from Bach and Boccherini to Debussy and Ravel, with pianist Gerald Moore. I'm withholding a fifth star because the collection contains mostly historical recordings, though it certainly captures one of history's greatest cellists in his prime. With that being said, "Les Introuvables de Pierre Fournier" is a must buy for cello entusiasts.

Twenty two years have elapsed since the entire world stirred with the emergence on stage of this lavish teenager, but this fact by itself may become the razor's edge, because having reached the absolute maturity you are subjected to an unsuspected performance levels in order to justify the wrought legend by the same artist.

Fortunately, he has known to deal about it with gratifying results.

Delicacy and bravura from a genius disguised as a boy.......2006-03-18

Kissin still looks very much the boy in the cover photo of this 1994 recital, one of the earliest follow-ups to his rapturously received Chopin recitals, also on RCA. He is jsut as phenomenal here. His commanding technique is reined in for the two Haydn sonatas, yet he presses just enough on the classical line to make it sound more vibrant and enticing.

Richter made a great specialty of the Schubert A minor Sonata D. 784, yet Kissin steps up with his own less haunted, more heroic interpretation--it works extremely well. Both pianists rescue Schubert from his cliched role as a lyrical innocent, revealing his underlying Beethovenian aspirations.

But really the most fun here is Tausig's barnstorming arrangment of the familiar Schubert March Militaire, a baby piece that gets transformed into Godzilla--it's a grotesque change but an irresistible adventure. Kissin tosses off the murderous passagework and cross-ahnd prestidigitation as if they were child's play. Meanwhile, the listener sits agape and thrilled to death.

A unique version of Schubert's Sonata.......2000-05-21

I loved this recording of Schubert's ghostly Sonata in A-minor by Kissin. I've personally seen Kissin play this Schubert sonata in concert. It was a fantastic performance then, and it is spectacularly perserved here in this CD. In the late Haydn sonata, Kissin's pianistic virtuosity is showcased in the final movement of this great sonata. This is one of the best Kissin recordings for Sony Classical to date. If you like Schubert, then get this CD today.
