Indy: Symphony No2; Souvenirs, poème pour orchestre Op62

Pierre Monteux's fondness for D'Indy led to a 78 recording of this symphony with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, which introduced it to the music public. That performance is now on CD (RCA Gold Seal 61888) and deserves honorable mention. James DePreist may not quite be Pierre Monteux, but he gives a propulsive and knowing performance of this large and fascinating symphony, with an orchestra that plays better than the San Francisco Symphony of the '40s and a vastly improved recording. This disc also has a substantial bonus, a touching symphonic poem memorializing the composer's late wife. The Monteux should be your second recording of this piece, but DePreist should be your first. --Leslie Gerber
