The Ancient Miracles
Editorial Reviews

You may find the liner notes confusing. You really have to look for the tiny, skimpy descriptions of the music. But the listening's great. At first you may think you're sitting in on a session from a later century; the first track sounds more like something from Riverdance than from a 14th century manuscript. But, hey, everything new had to come from someplace. The excellent performers on this disc convince us that this just may be the most exciting and engaging music anywhere--the solo voices are polished and exude real personality; the instruments are played with a real sense of style. Even if this isn't how those medieval folks did it, we can easily accept these interpretations as authentic. Most of the selections are from the 14th century and before, and the programming shows that early music can be just as much fun as the modern stuff. You just have to know where to find it and what to do with it. These performers do. --David Vernier

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Orthodox music.......2003-10-21
I have found music on this CD very beautiful, gentle and spiritual with beautiful sopranos. As compared with a lot of magnificent pieces of Russian sacred music this is a little different style, I would describe it more peaceful and quiet. I really enjoy this CD and I think that a lot of people who enjoy Russian Orthodox music will like it as well.
Mediocre for the genre.......2001-12-26
Russian chant is so popular due to the richness of sound (supplied largely in part by the cavernous depth of the Russian bass voice). This album is lacking in such rich performances. One piece flows into the next (not literally) and one finds themselves easily distracted and looking for something more interesting to occupy their minds. The mystery of sound, which so many people find soothing and meditative, is also lacking on this album. There are much better buys in this genre.
