To understand this review, take a look at the reviews of the other volumes in this series...
Some of the music on this series is so weird and beautiful that the composers should be grateful that it is released here. They should think of this series as a sampler which might atract us, the general public, into further investigation of their work, which we most probably would have never had the chance to hear it or become aware of its existence or of the composers/artists. Don't be so greedy... for I believe you have been done a favor. The same goes for the other volumes of this series. TWO THUMBS UP!

3 out of 5 stars Pieces you can't find anywhere else but the other reviews are right too.......2006-12-29

These are historic musical works some of which have never been made available to the public and are not available anywhere else. But the other reviews are correct, that the label is not doing right by the artists.

Sub Rosa Records was very friendly up until I sent them the master tape they had requested. When they said they wanted to use it I asked to be sent their license agreement. I never heard from them again. No license but they put my piece out on cd anyway. I asked a couple of times again but each time got no reply.

I doubt that anyone else with music in this cd series has received any royalties for the use of their work or will. We do, however, get to know that people are listening to our music, and that, not money, is what probably just about all of us created this music for. Someone without any legal right to do so is making money from this music, but the music itself can now be heard.

I'm marking this with 3 stars because that averages the good and bad of this cd set as described here.

    5 out of 5 stars Copyright.......2006-07-06

The compiler of this series always makes great efforts to track down the copyright holders. Rather than leave off tracks for which he can't find the holder they are included in the "interests of art and music history". The text with the CD explains this, and invites that untraceable copyright holders make contact to fix any problems (or take legal action)

Please bear this in mind when considering buying this CD

    1 out of 5 stars Unauthorized release.......2006-05-27

This release contains a track by the Egyptian-born U.S. composer Halim El-Dabh which was used without his permission or consent, and for which he is obtaining no royalties. Please take this into consideration when choosing whether to purchase this recording.

    4 out of 5 stars Chrome - 'Anthology 1979 - 1983' (Cleopatra) 4 1/2 stars.......2006-10-05

A superb eighteen track compilation from the folks at the Cleopatra label that I've just recently discovered. Look at the asking price here, for a used copy. Well worth it. Long-time Chrome fans may not get THAT wild about this release, however the more casual / newer fan(s) will most likely get a lot from this collection. Several of the 'deep album cuts' here that I don't remember RIGHT off hand are "Anti-Fade","Abstract Nympho",the catchy "Meet You In The Subway" and "Electric Chair".Give this one a chance. An absolute should-have.

    5 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL.......2006-04-25

considering the scarceness of some of the selections on this anthology,I would say this is essential both to the uninitiated and the casual fan - obviously the dedicated wont find anything here to entice, but everyone else should strongly consider picking this up!

5 out of 5 stars Hey, Pavement liked 'em - so should you!.......2004-12-22

This is art damaged punk, but more punk than art. Helios Creed brings the noise - and the phase shifter - in abundance. These are really exciting tunes, and at the price this is goig for, it's truly a bah-gain.

A little abrasive and, perhaps, off-putting initially, it gets under your skin in the same way that the Fall does (though the two sound nothing alike).

This anthology is a great way to discover a neglected, highly influential indie rock touchstone. Seriously recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Know before you buy.......2006-07-31

I've been trying to learn more about the history of electronic music and, after buying a few books and watching the "Modulations" documentary, decided to start listening with this album.

My background is that I'm a big fan of microhouse (e.g., stuff on the Morr Music label; Luomo) and drone (e.g., Stars of the Lid, stuff on the Kranky label), and I've listened to lots of Brian Eno projects. Loved all of that and wanted to hear more.

That being said, realize this anthology is the "real deal," so to speak. It's an excellent anthology with helpful notes, but you're not getting too much that's dreamy or melodic. Another way of saying this: you wouldn't find it in the "electronic" section at your local music store. You'd find it in the "experimental" section. This is primarily experimental noise.

4 out of 5 stars great starting point.......2006-04-27

I hadn't previously explored this type of stuff directly. I bought this on a lark because I liked the title. I'm very glad I did, and I will certainly pick up some of the later volumes. Most reviewers seem to think that this is the one to get, though.

This compilation includes some very early examples of electronic music and musique concrete, which is really interesting.

The ones that stand out in my mind are the Pierre Schaeffer, Gordon Mumma, and Nam Jun Paik pieces (play the Mumma piece LOUD!). A couple of the pieces run too long, but overall it's a fascinating listen.

5 out of 5 stars incredible collection of cutting edge sounds.......2005-08-25

I finally tracked this one down, and it was worth waiting to hear! (It's still out there to be found, don't despair...) This is Volume 1 of a series assembled by Guy Marc Hinant for Sub Rosa, but this is the gem of the series -- Volumes 2 and 3 don't contain as much of the rare, early pioneering music.

The entire first disc is fantastic, with major works by Ruttman, Schaeffer, Pousseur, Mumma, and Boehmer. There are a couple of quirky pieces thrown in, including the sounds of the fighting robots of the Survival Research Laboratories, but they work. Compared to much of what was produced in the onslaught of electronica since the early 1990s, it is amazing how much variety and creativity these older works are brimming with.

The second disc contains more amazing selections -- Cage's "Rozart Mix" and Nam June Paik's "Hommage a John Cage," Varese's masterpiece the "Poeme Electronique" and Xenakis's short "Concret PH," which were played together at the famous 1958 Philips Pavilion at the World Fair in Brussels, (the pavilion designed by Xenakis using the same equations he used to produce glissandi in his music! -- that's it on the cover of this disc), and a long piece by Pauline Oliveros. This one goes on too long at 30', but the ideas are fascinating for about 1/2 or 2/3 of that time. The more recent piece by dj Spooky is excellent, and Sonic Youth electronically manipulating crowd noise not only fulfills the "noise" part of the disc's title, but is strangely compelling in its own right.

The peak level of inventiveness and the variety make this disc compulsively listenable, in addition to being a treasure trove of electronic music landmarks.

      5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2004-01-27

This collection is simply incredible. Traces the history of avant garde noise experimentation and it's cross breeding with electronic music over the course of the 20th century. There are pieces on here that are breathtaking that you will not hear anywhere else. A must for any fan of challenging, experimental music.

5 out of 5 stars Legal Stuff Apart..........2007-04-21

To understand this review, take a look at the reviews of the other volumes in this series, particularly Vol. 4...
Some of the music on this series is so weird and beautiful that the composers should be grateful that it is released here. They should think of this series as a sampler which might atract us, the general public, into further investigation of their work, which we most probably would have never had the chance to hear or even become aware of its existence nor of that of the composers/artists. Don't be so greedy... for I believe you have been done a favor. The same goes for the other volumes of this series. TWO THUMBS UP!

        Product Description

"Sub Rosa presents the second part of the highly acclaimed and successful series Anthology Of Noise & Electronic Music. This 2nd volume explores the early days of pre-electronic music (Percy Grainger, Johanna M. Beyer) and features some rare or unpublished pieces by main composers of electronic music (Vladimir Ussachevsky, Otto Luening, Tod Dockstader, Morton Subotnick, Hugh Davies, Luc Ferrari) as well as unreleased tracks by musicians who are cornerstones of the 90's electronic scene: (Autechre, Aphex Twin, Scanner, Kim Cascone, Yoshihiro Hanno), as well as tracks from the acid movement (Woody Mcbride, Choose) and the industrial scene (Laibach, Spk). Without forgetting some free-jazz (Sun Ra) or rare stuff from Captain Beefheart, Daphne Oram, Alan R. Splet (David Lynch's sound designer on Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet and Dune). Like Volume 1, this second part is an absolute must for anyone interested in the roots and history of electronic music. The 2xCD comes in a deluxe digipak with a 24 paged informative booklet."

If you like true punk rock---- angry, political, discordant, minimalist, noisy, fast and loud, then you need this album. Nausea is one of the greatest crust-punk bands ever. if you like crust, grind, or dis-punk check this out.

        5 out of 5 stars NY Crust.......2004-07-07

While lots of people look to the jock filled, testostrone drven hardcore of nyhc bands like Cro-Mags and Agnostic Front, who are some off the most over rated bull ever. There's Nausea, one of the best crust/hc bands from that time. Basically they took everything great about Black Sabbath, Discharge, Venom and Amebix and mixed in one big pile, its great. A must own for anyone into punk hardcore or even grind.
