Customer Reviews:
I can name that tune in three notes.......2005-02-19
My family likes to put this disc in on shuffle and play name that tune. I wish they made more discs like this, only with more obscure works.
A Fabulous CD.......2004-10-14
The Idiot's Guide to Calssical Music is an awesome Cd for those people who want to have a tiny sample of all the great classical compositions. Track 61 and 63 are my favorite.
Mega-Sampler! This really does have 99 tracks!.......2002-03-20
Yes, this CD really does have 99 tracks. How do they do it? Each is about a minuet long. Some are longer, some are shorter, but you get the micro-essential moments of the music.
If you like burning your own CDs, then this is a great source for intra-track fillers, along the lines of They Might Be Giants' "Apollo 18" album, which has all of those short tracks on the end. The idea is to put your CD player on shuffle, so the short tracks get mixed in with the bona fide songs. The result being a very unusual album.
The booklet gives an explanation of the track, where you heard it (i.e. the Warner Brother's Cartoons, or on famous films), and where you can get the full piece of music. So it's a mega sampler CD.
I can honestly say that this CD is a great gift for the friend who has everything.
Fun Sampler.......2001-11-09
For the beginner. You will be surprised at how many of the 99 themes you recognize here. It is an easy introduction to classical music. Nice booklet too.
Useful........1999-03-22
Take it for what it is, a clever and useful GUIDE to classical music. No, it is NOT an uncut rendition of Beethoven's 9th symphony. It IS a cd that will jog your memory. You have heard many of the tunes presented here, but not always knowing what the work was. This is your chance to catch up with all the great classical music you have been exposed to. Cheap too.

Confirming Illinois' Assessment.......2004-01-27
The reviewer from Shaumburg is absolutely correct in his or her review: the sound of these discs is magnificent and the organ, used in a few tracks, is very "cool" (if that word may be used). If you haven't heard the Pomp Marches in their entirety, here's a great way to do so; all are great compositions. And don't let the inexpensive cost deter you--the recording is luxurious and worth triple the price!
Excellent recording, abundant music, superb value........2002-05-03
This recording is generous in its musical offerings. At mid-price (really super-bargain price on a per disc basis) you get a spendidly recorded and performed account of both symphonies and the marches as fillers. While there are slightly stronger Elgar couplings of the two symphonies with additional pieces (such as Solti on a Decca Double Decker and Previn on a Philips Duo) this set is thoroughly recommendable among the best Elgar recordings available.
The recording quality, made in the Abbey Road studios, throughout is luxurious and finely detailed at once (though the sound at the start of the 2nd symphony sounds slightly boxed in). The organ accompaniment in the Coronation March is wonderfully dramatic and powerful. Simply put there is great enjoyment to be found in this set at every turn.

Distinctively different contemporary symphonies.......2004-01-16
This is the first of two discs from the German company cpo that feature orchestral works by the Berlin-based American composer Gloria Coates. This disc features three of her symphonies (currently she has completed fourteen) that give an idea of the range of her style, which mixes tonal melodies, percussive rumblings, large-scale canonic writing and persistent string glissandi.
The Fourth Symphony, Chiaroscuro, was written in 1990 and is an expansion of the chamber orchestra score Transitions from 1984 (the recording here is of the world premiere). It is in three movements, the first of which is a locus classicus of Coates' work, combining as it does a tonal chorale, rumblings in the percussion and insistent glissandi on the strings and flexatone. The second movement is full of obsessively repeated notes and pesante melodies against a largely static backdrop; Coates' trademark glissandi become increasingly important as the movement progresses. In the finale, fragments from the first two movement are broken up and reassembled inside a texture that is softer than that of the preceding music.
The Seventh Symphony, Dedicated to those who brought down the Wall in PEACE, was written in 1990 and 1991; the recording here was made before the first public performance. This three-movement work begins with a slow canon based on pitches that gradually oscillate up and down. As the music progresses, the textures become increasingly dense and claustrophobic. The second movement pits austere melodies (made from fourths and seconds) against an alto register that alternates vigorous activity and soft clusters. The finale is a lengthy multiple-voice canon largely written in glissandi, overlaid with increasingly loud percussive eruptions.
The First Symphony, Music on Open Strings, was written in 1973 and 1974, but its finale is an orchestration of a brief unnumbered string quartet in glissandi written a decade earlier. This symphony is scored for string orchestra, and is in four movements. In the first movement, the instruments are tuned to a Chinese pentatonic scale (B flat, C, D flat, F, G flat) and initially the performers play only on the open strings (hence the title of the work). The simple motifs played on open strings gradually become more rhythmically and texturally complex as the movement progresses, with glissandi and tremolandi being added to the mix. The second movement scherzo continues this process, though with a more aggressive sound, before a third movement in which we hear the performers return their instruments to standard tuning. The finale dissolves the symphony in a swirling mass of liquid glissandi.
Coates' music is of a distinctly obsessive nature, and sometimes comes disturbingly close to one-dimensionality, yet the best of her works have an inner coherence that complements their unmistakeable surface sheen. I doubt that she will ever be a popular composer, but her music will undoubtably exert a strong appeal on a certain subgroup of fans of contemporary and experimental music.
Dark and breathtaking.......2002-09-06
This is Gloria Coates' finest CD release so far. For those not familiar with her work, her music is dark and engaging. Though primarily tonal, her music can venture into regions of nearly apocalyptic gloom. It is distinctly modern and profoundly intriguing. This is the musical equivalent of reading Poe. The macabre aspects of it are by no means off-putting but evocative and thought provoking. These symphonies are spectral, mist enshrouded and dusky. If you like music along the lines of Crumb's Haunted Landscape with dense and richly developed orchestration like Maxwell Davies, this is for you.
Caution: you may find Gloria Coates' music irresistable. Should that be the case her Symphony No. 2 also appears on CPO. There are also a set of Quartets on Naxos. Though the quartets are more along the lines of Tavener or Part, they retain the same appealingly haunted quality.

Amazon.com essential recording
Conductor Andrew Davis suffers from occasional bouts with that dreaded British bug--chronic dullness. He's not by any means a bad conductor, but you can always tell when he feels energized by the music he's playing or recording. Elgar is one of his great loves; that much is clear. These are his second recordings of the two symphonies, and they are excellent in every respect. Davis shapes both with a firm hand and a clear view of his final destination. Teldec's recorded sound is especially fine, naturally encompassing the extremes of Elgar's rich orchestration without unnatural spotlighting. At two discs for the price of one, this set is a great deal. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
Very good # 2; presentable #1.......1999-10-08
Teldec have now repackaged Andrew Davis's views on the two Elgar symphonies. The recordings come from two different sessions, and I think this shows. The first symphony (on disc 1) is given a performance that is somewhere between good and very good; it is straightforward but ultimately lacking in any special qualities. The coupled marches similarly are quite well done. Maybe the rather dry acoustic of Barking Town Hall in East London had something to do with it.
The version of the second has been generally praised in the UK, and Davis moves up a notch here with a performance to rank with the best, although for me Barbirolli isn't quite matched. In the South also comes over very well, and the church used for the recording of these two works imparts a greater sense of atmosphere than in the works in disc 1. Overall, it could be argued that the set is very worth having just for the second symphony and the overture. If you take this view, you will get a presentable first as a bonus.

Customer Reviews:
Davis gives us deeply felt Elgar.......2006-05-20
It's good news and bad news to say that Colin Davis has become the perfect conductor for the music of Elgar. One expected much more from him long ago, but this once fiery Berlioz interpreter has morphed into a comfy keeper of the British flame, however low it flickers. Elgar's symphonies are bulwarks of empire in the memory of older Britons, and although they have never traveled well, either to America or Europe, one has to admire the composer's mastery of symphonic form, his gravely grand inspiration, and the undercurrent of civilized anxiety that provides mysterious shadings, particularly in the gnomic Sym. #2, which only the English can sit through with pleasure.
Davis feels this music and gets committed playing from the LSO under concert conditions. Also, for once his tempos don't drag. The First Sym. proceeds at the same pace as my favorite recording, Barbirolli's live reading with the Halle on BBC Legends. But the LSO plays far better and is captured in excellent sound. Anthony Payne's rendering of Elgar's unfinished Sym. #3 is beautifully done here, yet one has to wonder. How great is any composer if his sketches sound more vigorous and interesting than many of his finished works?
