From the Artist
The First Suite is definitely "optimistic," and there has been no different approach to it since Casals.

The Second - "tragic" has evolved over the time. Maybe, because our definition of the word "tragic" has changed. To me, this prelude, and the rest of the Second Suite manifest more of a poetic character, something like Die winterreise (winter dreams).

The Third, without any argument, is heroic.

The Fourth - "grandiose"(?). Too superficial. To me, the Fourth Prelude sounds like a narrative... read more

Amazon.com essential recording

Though they were long misunderstood as mere technical hurdles, Bach's six suites for unaccompanied cello are among those rare works of music that offer inexhaustible rewards for performer and listener alike. Yo-Yo Ma gave a pathbreaking account of the suites back in the '80s (Suites for Unaccompanied Cello ) but returns to them here impelled by a unique and interdisciplinary approach. For this project, Ma engaged the talents of artists in different fields--ranging from a landscape artist to a Kabuki actor and figure skaters--to produce six short films as a visual correlative for the highly distinctive character of each suite. While the success of the films in illuminating Bach's creativity is decidedly uneven, Ma brings the music itself to life with a searing, quasi-vocal eloquence. His interpretations are probing, characterized by imaginative bowing and attention to the spacious architecture of Bach's score. This is especially clear in Ma's preference for broad, expansive tempos and patient spinning of filigreed detail. True, the generally Romantic cast of his conception can seem overdone and exaggerated in statement, as if Ma is more intent on overlaying his own personality on the discipline of the music. But the prayerful, meditative concentration he brings to the Sarabandes--listen to the single-lined, anguished tone painting in Suite 5--is utterly convincing. There is a sense of profound introspection here, while in the Sarabande of Suite 6 Ma's phrasing suggests we are in the same spiritual terrain as Beethoven's late quartets. Yet there is no lack of blistering energy and extroverted high spirits in some of the more overtly dance-oriented movements. While purists may complain of distortion in these accounts, Ma once again proves he has something vital to say with this music. --Thomas May

2 out of 5 stars No, Yo Yo ...........2007-03-11

A sub-standard, glossy, and sometimes sentimental interpretation of the Suites. Skip this one and go for the Rostropovich - always intelligent and inspired - never sentimental.

5 out of 5 stars Inspired by Ma!.......2006-01-20

The music on this second recording of Yo-Yo Ma's is fantastic. Admittedly, the packaging is a little confusing (the title itself is a little misleading-- as if it were not comprised of Bach compositions). But the only real complaint is that the fourth suite is split in half on the two CDs. This would be easily solved by by putting 1, 3 & 5 on one CD & 2, 4 & 6 on the other.

But the important thing is the MUSIC & I'll nevertheless give this CD set 5 stars-- this is essential listening!

I think of Bach's cello suites like the Dao De Jing-- it is open to so many endless possibilities in translation. But what I find so appealing in this recording is Ma's fine sense of balance between a 'classical' & 'romantic' approach to the cello suites. Ma is certainly not metronomically rigid with his reading, but neither is it too free. I think he strikes just the right balance in these recordings.

The famous Prelude of the first suite is at a surprisingly fast tempo (so I thought) but it flows-- it is not hurried-- one almost gets the impression of movement but stillness at the same time.

Though for a solo instrument, Bach's cello suites often sound like two, sometimes even three instruments playing at once! And what is amazing is Ma takes on the different 'voices' like an actor playing out all the parts-- the different implied musical lines of this virtual polyphony are brought out by Ma's playing by differences in bowing, volume & character.

The recording itself is so amazingly warm-- you can really feel the wood in the recording. Yo-Yo Ma's cello dances, leaps, sings & soars here.

The sixth suite is my personal favourite, especially the gavotte. It was listening to the sample here on Amazon that convinced me that I needed to own this recording. It is one of the most beautiful things Bach ever wrote I think.

I have three other recordings of the cello suites, but I confess that this is by far the most human & the most warm. Bach's cello suites are perhaps some of the greatest music EVER written & Ma simply channel's the music so exquisitely here.

You have not lived if you haven't listened to Bach's suites for cello! Do yourself a favour & get this recording-- you won't be sorry! I will cherish this recording always...

5 out of 5 stars A must-have recording!.......2005-08-25

OK... I'm very late to weigh in on this CD as I see there are already so many reviews about it but I've been enjoying this CD so much that I just had to share my thoughts with you.
The fluidity of Yo-Yo Ma's playing is incredible. What I've come to appreciate more and more is his willingness - eagerness to have fun and take risks. From his recordings with Bobby McFerrin to his Obrigado Brazil recordings to simply Baroque all these recordings show a man who is so totally comfortable in any style or setting in which he might choose to play.
My congratulations to the recording staff "behind the scenes" as they most certainly had to have been inspired, judging by the quality recording they have produced. Too many times, really great performances can fail to convey the sense of presence that this recording has captured. They have given us a gift no matter what price you've paid for this CD; he's in your room, complete with the sense of ambiance and room boundaries that he was recorded in.
Don't bother with all the surround sound settings! Throw that all away and simply listen in two-channel stereo.
When people have written about what nice background music this makes I can only grin inside. Yes, it's charming. Yes, it's easy to live around but it also can compel you to sit and listen. How often does that happen?
This is a lovely recording of a masterful performance by one heck of a talented musician.

4 out of 5 stars Bravo Yo Yo !.......2005-06-28

Merci d'avoir lu mon humble avis. R.R

5 out of 5 stars Very good.......2005-03-24

This set could possibly be the best you can get for the complete Bach Cello Suites. The people who write bad reviews for Yo-Yo Ma's recordings probably think, as I myself used to, that he is overrated and not very professional. However, I have come to realize that Yo-Yo Ma is a very professional musician, and really is one of the best cellists alive. I have seen him play concerts on TV, and every gesture and sound he makes seems deeply inspired and it truly seems like he understands the music. This recording is no exception. Each cello suite is marvelously performed (and from what I hear, even better than the older recording he made), and the sound quality is extraordinary. Highly recommended.

This is Yo-Yo Ma's first recording of Bach's Cello Suites, digitally recorded in 1983 and first issued on LP. He has since made a second recording of the Suites in 1998, taken from the soundtrack of a video series, so it's interesting that the earlier set remains available. If you've been lucky enough to hear Ma play this music in concert, you'll realize that neither set represents his Bach at its best. This rendition is generally quite straightforward, beautifully played and musically sound but sometimes not very emotional. The second set is more expressive but frequently seems self-conscious. Either of these recordings is a worthy representation of Bach's superb music, but neither attains the mature eloquence of Starker's final recording, a level Ma will probably reach himself in his third recording. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Truly Excellent Choice!.......2007-07-20

The years that this set has remained in the catalogue attest for the level of interpretation and expertise that Yo-Yo Ma imbews here with these great "soulful" pieces. My first exposure to these works was this recorded set, and I certainly will say that I "struck it right" with this addition to my music collection. Are there better versions...? Well, there are other Interpretations, of course. But, from what I determine, Mr. Ma is playing Bach's music as written, with his own natural inflection, of course. Could you ask for more....not much! A Fine Recording Overall, Fine Interpretation, Fine Warm Ambiance (as it strikes me) as if Yo-Yo is playing these in your living room, just for the two of you. And I like this feeling a lot. Greatly Recommended. ~operabruin

~I happened to see on Amazon here, that this set has been remastered, so I would think that the new set would be pretty nice! I'll be checking it out!

5 out of 5 stars exquisite.......2007-07-05

The most exquisite classical recording you will ever buy. I have owned the vinyl for years and bought the CD's for convenience - car, kitchen. Ma is the best, and the sound quality is extraordinary - you can sometimes hear him breathing!

4 out of 5 stars Musically very pleasing, though not the best........2007-05-18

It would be harsh - with such great exponents of these suites recorded before him, to compare Mr. Ma's playing with other great cellists.
I agree that if you concentrate on the dances in the suites, you will find the best of Ma's interpretation. They are musical, soulful and beautiful. Elsewhere, like in Preludes, the required depth and nuance are some what missing. Listen to Rostropovich, for example, an immediate difference surfaces.
Even so, a 4 star rating is still well-deserved, bearing in mind that Mr. Ma was not yet 30 years old when he recorded this album.

2 out of 5 stars Better performances available.......2007-03-27

Although some would call this performance "straightforward," it lacks the depth and richness of available recordings by Fournier, Casals, and Rostropovich. Before purchasing, take the time to listen to the Suite No. 1 Prelude of all four cellists. Whereas Fournier, Casals, and Rostropovich are movingly expressive, Yo-Yo Ma's is "on point" but lacking emotion.

I wanted to buy this CD but had no performer in mind. I first chose Yo-Yo Ma just because I'd heard of him. After a quick review of other customer comments and my own test runs, I decided to buy Fournier, Casals, AND Rostropovich, just because I was excited to hear a familiar piece played so beautifully in three different ways. Note that Yo-Yo Ma didn't make the cut.

5 out of 5 stars Music for the Heart.......2006-12-25

The experience of music doesn't get better than this, and rarely as good. The Bach cello suites take you into an inner space that most folks in this culture never visit, and Ma takes you there effortlessly, with nothing to separate you from this imperishable gift that Bach gave the world. Listen to it over and over again, and you will only grow deeper into this music. Mediate with it, and if you have animals in your life, play it for them and just watch what happens.

The CD came on time and was good quality. It was just what I heard on the online player.

5 out of 5 stars Sheer Brilliance.......2007-05-14

Wonderful, inspiring, beautiful. Music like this is why I took up the Viola. The marrying of Bach, with the skill of Patricia and the acoustics of the location make this an enthralling experience. I can not recommend this highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars A true essential.......2007-05-13

This recording is an essential for every Bach lover's collection. This is a phenomenal performance that only gets better the more you listen to it. Also, as a violist myself, I notice that as I study each suite, I gain even more respect for the depth and perception which Ms. McCarty displays in her playing. Each suite has a delightful and distinct character of its own. This is a grerat recording of the suites, whether on cello or viola.

3 out of 5 stars Eh - It was alright.......2005-03-20

Honestly, I thought the album was well done. As a violist, I was glad to see a solo viola performer taking on the challenge of interpreting Bach's viola suites, but really, this CD has nothing on Yo Yo Ma's version on cello. McCarthy just can't match Ma's interpretive abilities; and honestly, I've heard better viola recordings as well, though I can't remember who off of the top of my head. Still, it's a decent recording, with very nice acoustics.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful addition to any Bach lovers collection.......2004-06-28

This CD really rounds out my collection of the Bach Suites. If you love Bach you shuldn't miss the rich tones and the amazing clarity of Patricia McCarty's work.

Apparently, no music could be simpler than these suites, composed for a single, unaccompanied instrument, and each made up of a prelude followed by a series of stylized Baroque dances: allemande, courante, saraband, minuet, bourré/e or gavotte, and gigue. Yet each suite, each movement has a striking individuality and each cellist makes the series his own. It is totally objective music and, at the same time, intensely personal. János Starker's view is spare, ascetic, technically flawless, suggesting much more than it says, like a fine line drawing by an old master painter. --Joe McLellan

4 out of 5 stars SACD has excellent sound, but where is the G minor sonata?.......2006-12-02

Recently, I have been replacing my very favorite classical records with CD's. I've always loved my Mercury records of Bach Cello Suites, played by Starker, so decided to purchase the CD. I also have the record of the Cello Sonatas with Starker & Sebok, which are equally wonderful. I decided to purchase the SACD of this recoding because it also included the Sonata set, or so I thought. If I only wanted the suites I probably would have bought the RCA Victor set based on the reviews here.

Upon receiving this SACD, I decided to check the sound quality against my records, which have a wonderful warm sound. I found that the sound on the suites was almost indistinguishable between the record and SACD (the only difference being that the record played a little louder at the same volume level). On the sonatas, the records sounded a touch mushy. The SACD was crisper without loosing any of the warmth. So while there may be technical problems with the CD of this recording, in my opinion the SACD has excellent sound.

Then I noticed that the SACD only included two of the three sonatas that are on the record. The beautiful G minor sonata (which is my favorite) was not included. This recording in terms of artistry and technical quality deserves 5 stars, but because of the stupid decision to exclude the G minor sonata I take away a star.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2005-07-22

OK. So I'm no musician, but for my money this is superb, beautifully played and emotionally expressive.

I am quite alarmed by the reaction of some of the other reviewers here. The sound quality really is not as bad as all that (in fact it's pretty clear compared to most) and Bach's suites are brought to life in a way that I have not heard before.

Where other lesser musicians make these sound like a cold, academic exercise, Starker invests just the right amount of feeling to make this a truly emotional and rewarding experience.

Have a listen and find out for yourself. I'm sure many will disagree with me - they're just wrong!

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent - But buy the 2004 SACD release.......2005-01-08

Janos Starker has recorded the Bach cello suites five times, and when asked why he has made so many, he said it was because each time he signed with a new record company, they wanted him to do another set(!) His honest, no-nonsense personality shows through in his Bach performances as well. Some claim his approach is too dry and unemotional, but after many years of listening to and playing these suites, his clarity and sense of structure keep me engaged long after I've grown tired of more visceral, "romantic" approaches. Many say this is his best set, but if you chose it, avoid at all costs the CD for sale here and buy the hybrid SACD/CD released in 2004, also available on amazon.com, even though it costs more. The reviewers below (and others) have found this CD to have been recorded a full tone sharp (ugh!). I don't know about that since I don't have it, but the 2004 SACD/CD sounds right on pitch to me.

3 out of 5 stars Epochal performance, poor remastering.......2003-12-19

The reviewer below expresses it best. Starker's Mercury set of the suites is, for most cellists, the gold standard. Technically speaking, they are flawless. Artistically speaking there is laser-beam musical understanding that arcs the entire recording. The later RCA recording is even deeper in understanding, but Starker's Bach is akin to Gould's in this regard: you want both the earlier and the later -- they are both that great.

What a shame then that shoddy remastering has put these disks into the realm of the unlistenable. Anyone who is intimate with these pieces will notice immediately (as the prior reviewer did) that they are sharp. It is so distracting that I cannot bear to put the disk in the player. A next to criminal moment in the rush to cash in on the LP to CD bonanza!

Performance: 5+ Stars; remastering: 0 Stars.

2 out of 5 stars simply not very good.......2002-04-06

I saw this CD set in a used music store at $5.99, and naturally thought I was getting a great buy. Frankly, I wish I could get my money back. Of all the recordings of the suites that I've heard by big-name cellists, this is by far the weakest.

Judging purely from a standpoint of cello technique, Janos Starker was certainly once the world's greatest cellist, and this virtuosity shows in the technical passagework of the 6th suite, originally written for a 5-string instrument but played by Starker (and most cellists) on only 4. But there is far more to Bach's cello suites than technical skill. Starker's sound is very dry and often thin (and not just because of poor remastering), and his interpretation is extremely odd to say the least. He has the tendency to take time and make phrase endings in places where neither the melodic nor harmonic line call for them. He often chooses not to vibrate certain notes, seemingly arbitrarily. And he clearly has no concept of the piece as a polyphonic work, trying (and often failing) to make smooth melodic lines when there are none to be found.

For an incredible, historical look at Bach from the first half of the last century, grab the Casals recording. For a unique look at a modern interpretation of Bach, get Hanani. For excellent period instrument playing, buy Bylsma. And for a rich, romantic interpretation, buy Rostropovich. Do yourself a favor, and just stay away from this one.

5 out of 5 stars Materpiece!.......2004-12-28

Michael Zaretsky delivers a stunning virtuoso performance of this piece. The rendition on viola gives the bach suites a lyrical quality and Zaretsky's rendition is masterful, with an attention to the subtle nuances of every passage and every original notation from one of the earliest manuscripts. A must for the bach suite lover.

    3 out of 5 stars Why?.......2006-07-11

Dieltiens is promoted in the liner notes as an expert in the "period instrument" field. Well, he does play a period cello. The British critic Robert Layton used to say that once you get the tempo right, everything else seems to fall into place. The corollary of that is -- if you get the tempo wrong, everything falls apart. Listen to the sarabande movement (track 4) of the first disc. Pedestrian, plodding tempo, and the music disintegrates in Dieltiens' hands. The only real advantage of the "period" movement was the rehabilitation, by its better adherents, of swifter tempi for so-called "slow" movements -- such as the sarabande above. You might as well listen to Casals or Yo-Yo Ma. My recommendation is Heinrich Schiff.

5 out of 5 stars Not "definitive" but seductive.......2004-12-22

I hate to quibble with "rubythroat" as I suspect she (?) knows more about music than I. However, the notion of a "definitive" version of any of Bach's works for solo instrument...keyboard, violin, cello or what have you...would seem to me the very definition of nonsense on stilts. My guess is that Bach himself never played his Goldberg Variations the same way twice and would have cringed at the notion of a "correct" interpretation.

She is quite correct, though, to love this recording of the cello suites. It's quite unlike any of the dozen or so that I own. Never flashy or melodramatic, it nonetheless seems to creep up on you and seduce rather than compel; like the speaker who whispers to quiet a noisey room. The music seems to enter as much through the navel as the ear. I would not recommend this as a first choice to someone who was not familiar with this music, but if you love these pieces and would like the experience of hearing them again "for the first time", try Dieltiens. I think you'll find yourself returning to him quite often.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive recording of the Bach Cello Suites.......2001-01-20

This recording is the finest ever made of Bach's monumental cello suites. Diltiens is in his usual perfect form, playing with exquisite expression and flawless technique and intonation. His profound understanding of Bach's harmonic language and inherent grasp of the rhythmic styles in Baroque dances imbues his performance with undeniable vibrancy. This recording is true to Baroque performance practices-you won't hear any exagerrated romantic performance practices-(no sloppy sliding or warbling vibrato.) I cannot recommend it enough. Track 20 on disc 1 is breathtaking.

4 out of 5 stars A joyful Christmas box of many rare musical jewels........2001-12-10

Laserlight has the rights to so much recorded music - excellent, good, indifferent, bad - & of such varying sound quality, that it's difficult to rate the label's bargain compilations. Most are afflicted with "excerpt-itis," the "greatest hits" disease. However, some compiler with an interesting ear for the offbeat & a sense of humor put this fine five-CD Christmas box together. He or she did so by leaning on some less familiar music & by relying largely on good performances from ye olde East Germany ensembles & conductors, (as do Koch-Schwann & Berlin Classics labels, at higher prices).

The #1 disk is a solid performance of The Nutcracker Suite (also issued as a single disk by Laserlight) by Peter Wohlert conducting the Berlin Symphony (not to be confused with the Berlin Philharmonic). With that over-cooked chestnut out of the way, this compilation gets interesting.

We get some venerable excerpts of Bach cantatas, oratorios, motets & Lutheran hymns, performed by Fidicinia Capella, New Leipzig Bach Collegium Musicum, & the German Bach Soloists, all respectable ensembles. Edita Gruberova even joins in "Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen." Plus an earful of grand organ preludes.

Handel is represented by a happy section of "Water Music" & a piece for brass instruments from his oratorio, "Judas Maccabaeus." What, no "Halleluah Chorus?" Believe me, you don't need it! But it's here all the same.

Mozart checks in with the lovely, too brief, "Ave verum Corpus," motet for chorus, strings, & organ, K. 618. We also get snappy, dutiful baroque contributions from Vivaldi, Corelli & Purcell.

The remainder of the set is filled out with music from: Pavel Josef Vejvanovsky; Francesco Onofrio Manfredini; Johann Ludwig Krebs; George Friedrich Kauffmann; John the Elder Alcock; Michel Corrette; Michael Praetorius; Johann David Heinichen; Johann Heinrich Schmelzer; & Giuseppe Torelli. The inclusion of these marvelous obscurities pushes this bargain compilation over the top.

I give it four stars because the performances & sound quality vary considerably. But the compensation comes from hours of joyously felt Nativity music, a good deal of it unfamiliar yet beautiful all the same. Load all five into the CD changer, hit the random button, relax & enjoy your spiced eggnog with family & friends.

The five CDs are titled: 1. The Nutcracker 2. Classical Christmas 3. Christmas Music for Trumpet & Organ 4. Johann Sebastian Bach - Christmas Music 5. Baroque Christmas Music. They can be purchased individually.

      Album Description

"The six suites for unaccompanied cello by Johann Sebastian Bach must rank as one of the greatest body of works for any stringed instrument played solo. Here we have them transcribed and played on the guitar by Andreas von Wangeheim, and a most convincing job he makes of them... a disc well worth exploring." - MusicWeb International

Bach's famous suites for cello solo from a different perspective: in order to emphasize the polyphonic structure of this marvelous music, Andreas von Wangenheim has transcribed them for guitar. The Six Suites for Violoncello Solo put the instrument through its paces in the same way as the Six Sonatas and Partitas for Violin Solo. A closer look at these works reveals a fascinating element of Bach's compositional art: the polyphony that is concealed in almost all of his solo lines. Andreas von Wangenheim is considered one of the finest guitarists of the younger generation. He won the 1987 Bach Prize at the International Guitar Competition for Students in Europe. His CD Orlando was awarded Audiophile CD of the Month by the specialist press in September 1990.

This is the CD you need to test your new hi fi. The sound of the period cello literally shakes the earth and his phrasing is so original it goes right through you. Generally slow in tempo, this is like the Johnny Cash of Bach Cello Suites, no 2 only to the more sophisticated Fournier, similar in mood to the great Casals but more affecting somehow - amazing.
