Instrumental are a British sextet of hip, classically trained string musicians who have recorded with electronica acts like the Orb and jammed onstage with junglist crews. On Acoustek they serve up "classical" remixes of well-known techno standards--a potentially cheesy project that is more than redeemed by the group's playful intelligence and gutsy feel for the music. Briskly performed and well-crafted arrangements of tunes like Orbital's "Forever," the Orb's "Little Fluffy Clouds" and Moby's "Hymn" do more than just highlight the interwoven patterns and haunting melodies that techno often slips behind its pounding beats; they also expose the debt this music owes to the phasing pulses of minimalists like Steve Reich, Terry Riley, and Philip Glass. Though Instrumental relies too much on plucked double bass to carry the beat, they often do an inspired job of translating dance rhythms into the more languid language of strings. --Erik Davis

This work is a fantastic collection of electronica performed in the style of a string sextet. Where most attempts at this would fail, Acoustek plays with so much emotion, one can't help but keep listening for what is next. For anyone with a liking towards progressive or exploratory musical forms. Five Stars! No - Six actually!

This is one of the best cd's I've heard in a long time. The concept is great: arrange classic electronic music songs for a string sextet. It is amazing to hear the great textures and interpretations this group can give to songs from orbital, the orb, moby, and brian eno. Their version of Little Fluffy Clouds is amazing, as is Forever. I would recommend this cd to anyone who is even mildly interested in techno.

Acoustek is Fantastik!.......2001-12-17

My husband is a Techno DJ and I have a background in classical music, and this album is a great joining of these two genres of music! Acoustek by Instrumental is an album of classical arrangements of electronic music. The sound quality is superb, and, whew!, the musicians will knock your socks off! Heartbreakingly beautiful and intellectually stimulating. Definitely a "must have" for anyone interested in either classical or electronic music!
