This is an amazing collection of songs, all performed with such skill that even my 8-year-old son likes this CD. Brahms and Beatles, Mozart and Ellington, there is something here for everyone. And thank you, thank you, thank you for "Bassoonist's Holiday."

I delight in the bassoon! What a unique and great sound, throaty and thrillingly coarse, yet soaring to sound at times like sax, like oboe, like cello, like a bunch of bassoonatics!

This is delightful collection of musical styles played by this innovative and talented quartet. Choosing to select pieces that are not typically of the bassoon repertoire, we go from Waltz to Gershwin to Broadway to Motzart to Lennon/McCartnye to Sibelius to most of us unknowns such as Mitchell Clarke to Duke Ellington.

All played with passion and gusto and excellent tonality, phrasing and tempo.

This would have to be the best bassoon ensemble cd on the market. The arrangements are stylish and clever, and the performances brilliant! Fraser Jackson must be the most accomplished contrabassoonist I have ever head. This cd is a must for any bassoonists collection be you amateur or proffessional.

This disc is really superb!!! Not only is the playing at an extremely high level by the group, the arrangements are also outstanding. The Brahms is abolutely beautiful. The group goes from lightning fingers bravura to sweet soulful singing. It is a joy to listen to again and again.

I bought this CD directly from the artist himself after hearing him perform several of the pieces live. David Burgess is guitarist of extraordinary talent and broad interest. This CD contains beautiful pieces from both South America and Spain that are intricately performed with great depth of emotion. I would recommend this disc for any true music lover.

Wherever you are, David Burgess, don't get exhaust yourself concertizing. Get back in the studio and record another excellent CD! Your talent is much too good to let slip away in the ephemeral wind; crystallize it on CD for everyone to hear long after your fine concerts are memories. Yeah, I guess I'm begging you to lay down more brilliant recordings. It can be Latin American, Spanish, Brazilian--anything. Just do it! ...

David Burgess is one of those artists that is a total gem to find. He doesn't have a "big name" or a huge recording contract, but when it comes down to what matters (namely playing well) he can totally deliver the goods. Not only is he technically amazing (I've seen him in concert and he honestly didn't hit a single bad note), he plays with an incredible amount of soul. You can tell both on record and live, that he breathes this music and that it truly means the world to him.

Not only is the album a varied (yet consistent and thematic) but he employs a wide range of techniques to achieve his amazing sound: "Samba do Aviao" is breathtaking in terms of speed and beauty, the rhytmic oddities and brilliant use of percussive effects in "Berimbau" is unreal, "La Catedral" is sublime and almost played at a whisper, yet he breathes new life into familiar favorites like Isaac Albeniz's "Leyenda." This is one of the most creative albums of any genre that I've heard, but it is by far the best guitar album I own (and one of the best I've ever heard.) Another thing that makes this album so great is how rare some of this material is, some of these are complete gems and not at all in the standard repertoire.

And if you have the chance...GO SEE HIM IN CONCERT...its even better than the superb album.

I bought this CD at one of Burgess' concerts (in Virginia). He plays with much strength, variety of technique, and tonal quality; moreover, he has excellent command of the rhythm required for this mainly Latin American collection. My favorites are the hypnotically delightful "Seis por Derecho" and "La Misionera," which has a driving and catchy rhythm. I find almost every other piece enjoyable except for the over-recorded "Leyenda" and the somewhat ponderous piece by Rodrigo (whom I'm still a big fan of, nonetheless). It would be nice if those two were replaced by a few of the other interesting Brazilian pieces I heard at the concert. Fortunately, I was told that Burgess might put out more Brazilian recordings later in 2002. I'm very much looking forward to hearing them.

If you've never heard of Astor Piazzolla, or if you think a tango is something middle-aged women dance in poofy dresses, then this CD is a must-buy. Far from being the cartoonish parodies that tend to make it into our popular culture, these tangos are some of the slickest, sexiest music you'll ever hear. The "Four Seasons of Buenos Aires" are some of Piazzolla's most popular works; particularly inspired is how each season works in a quotation from the opposite of Vivaldi's Four Seasons, e.g. Piazzolla's "Summer" quotes Vivaldi's "Winter" - 'cause, you know, when it's winter in Italy, it's summer in Buenos Aires. But if the Four Seasons are archetypes, the rest of the music is even more captivating for being equally brilliant and less familiar. The selections vary between silky sensuality and frenzied attack, but they never lose the unique energy and joie de vivre that characterizes Piazzolla's work. It sure doesn't hurt the music's cause that the Violons du Roy tear into it with panache, giving these pieces the sharp edges and manic flair that makes them come alive. If you turned an Aston Martin into a CD, it would sound like this. Give it a spin.

5 out of 5 stars Exhilarating Program by the Brilliant Young Cellist Alban Gerhardt.......2005-11-15

Alban Gerhardt. Remember the name because he is headed toward great things in the music world. Having just heard him 'live' performing Haydn's Cello Concerto in C Major with the LA Philharmonic, he is a brilliant talent, a Berlin artist who has impeccable technique, captivating stage presence, one of the richest and warmest tones before the public today, intense musicality, and passion!

This interesting concert is all music from the Spanish/Hispanic school and Gerhardt (with fine collaboration from Rina Dokshinsky) pulls out all the stops. Works included are by Astor Piazzolla, Manuel de Falla, Enrique Granados, Isaac Albeniz, Gaspar Cassado, and Maurice Ravel ('Vocalise', 'Miroirs'). Some of the works are transcriptions while others are written especially for the cello and piano. Gerhardt captures the essence of each of the works and allows his instrument to sing and soar while demonstrating his meticulous technique.

This is a young star on the rise. Expect many more recordings to follow. Highly recommended and especially at his bargain price! Grady Harp, November 05

After hearing this CD for more than 2 years and sharing it with every loved person I Know, the least I have to say about it is that is the best guitar performance I have ever hear of Tango en Skay, Aniello Desiderio is a Monster not only by his incredible power when he plays the guitar but for his remarkable sense of tempo and incredible technique. If you like the work of Astor Piazzola this is a must, the performance of Historie du Tango: Cafi 1930 will take you to the limits of your senses. The Brower's Tres danzas concertantes are beautiful and Desiderio's work is great.

From beginning to end you are going to love this CD

    Uruguayan pianist Polly Ferman has made a specialty of the piano music of South America. Her previous CDs of music by Ernesto Nazareth and Ernesto Lecuona were thoroughly delightful. Now she offers a wide-ranging program of mostly brief, dance-based piano music in forms from South America, although written by composers from many countries. You have to follow the track listing inside the booklet (the listing on the tray card is virtually illegible) to find out whether the delightful piece you are hearing was written by Gottschalk, Chabrier, Stravinsky, Weill, or Ginastera. But whatever the music, it's all entertaining and sometimes (as with Piazzolla) considerably more than that. Ferman's playing encompasses all these styles convincingly, and the recording conveys the piano sound with considerable realism. Romeo needs to clean up its presentation; aside from the badly-designed tray card, the pianist's biography comes right in the middle of the program notes on the music. But for its contents, this is the most entertaining piano collection since Gloria Cheng's Piano Dance and it's highly recommended. --Leslie Gerber

    I don't mean to be over zealous with my Cuban/Spanish Moorish heritage, and I agree with my Argentinean counterpart soldiers who are here in Eastern Europe with me serving as peace keepers with NATO, that certain things have to be clear and made public, so that people can be educated. This is the purpose of this review. This CD is an excellent recording of the different styles of Habaneras, Milongas and Tangos, they all are related. The roots are from Africa/Cuba brought to Argentina by Cuban sailors. The great German writer Rodolfo A. Windhausen states in one of his research report on the roots of the Tangos the following: "I learned about the Cuban roots of Tango. The Habanera rhythm was brought to Argentina by Cuban sailors in the nineteenth century. In fact, there is still one Milonga in Havana, once a week, for a small Tango community". If you want to hear Habaneras check the CD " Habaneras By Maria Teresa Vera" and Habaneras by Marco Rizo on both of these CD's you will hear the roots of Tangos played by one of the most respected Cuban guitar player(Maria Teresa Vera) of all times. I first heard of the Habaneras when I was young. My father would play them on his guitar while my mother would join him in singing the songs. My favorite was "twenty years" which is a classic! This is a good starting point for those who enjoy the Tangos, Milongas and the Habaneras interpreted here by this great pianist from Uruguay. Che, buy it, you will not regret it! It's part of your rich Argentinean culture.

    This is delightful! The pianist is superb in her interpretation of the pieces. The music takes you away to another world.
