GORGEOUS!.......2007-06-13
I wish this CD had been around when I was planning my wedding as it would have been great for helping the bride to select music! Still, it's wonderful to listen to now.
Wonderful intro To MEHDl ..........2006-06-08
I've always enjoyed Great Wedding music and this album is no exception, but while reading some of the customer recommendations posted on this site I discovered a group by the name of MEHDl (pronounced medie). After an online search I found their site (S00THINGMUSIC,C0M) and listened to the samples...
I was instantly blown away by the quality of this music and so I gave it a try and now that I have listened to these CDs several times I really must say that although I'm still a Tomaso Albinoni fan of, I find MEHDl to be a great addition to this CD. I had them both in my multi-disc CD player during the wedding and love the way they compliment each other. I highly recommend that you give this artist a try or atleast just go listen to the samples, I have a feeling you'll be glad you did.
great.......2006-02-19
Highly recommended. Even has suggestions for pre-ceremony, processional, ceremony, and recessional inside. 2 different versions of Midsummer Night's Dream march included - one with trumpet and organ and one with a full orchestra. Lots of great selections, well recorded.
The Complete Wedding Album.......2005-08-05
This album has a lot of great wedding music. It had all of the songs I was looking for. There also is great background music for the ceremony. Glad I purchased it
Almost the compete wedding album.......2004-05-07
I used this cd to help me plan which songs I wanted to use for each part of the wedding. This cd helps you suggest the placement for the prelude, processional, ceremony and recessional. The cd mainly has classical songs, but it does have a few of "today's" songs. There could have been a few more songs they could have added. But overall, its a good cd.

Feels like a "pig-pile" on the bottom-most review.......2006-08-26
Not too often I hear something on NPR that makes me pull over and listen hard but that happened a short while back with the recording of Symphony #2 in this set. Picked the entire box set up and wowser. These are fast, exciting, absolutely buoyant performances. The orchestra plays miraculously. Couldn't be happier and at this price!!
For those that don't know the earlier Schubert symphonies--well, for the cost of one top-dollar CD you can hear them and you'll be amazed these aren't heard more often. Boy Schubert (many of these were written in his teens) may not have been the world's greatest symphonic crafts-person back then (he was merely very good with rough edges) but his full melodic genius was present when he was probably two years old. Here I am playing, and REALLY enjoying a symphony by a sixteen-year-old.
Beethoven allegedly saw a score of Schubert's before he died (Beethoven, not Schubert)and was quoted as saying, "HOLY MACKEREL! This kid's got the chops!" Beethoven talked like that sometimes.
Great.......2006-04-10
Ricardo Mutti takes the Wiener Philharmoniker to the best performance of Schubert's Symphonies. They are the best.
Great Italian Schubert!.......2005-10-28
I certainly disagree with the last review. Maybe for some people Muti's Schubert is at the first glance not 'deep' enough. But I have never heard the symphonies in such a joyful manner, with fast tempi all the way. And the Wiener Philharmoniker here clearly show why they are regarded as one of the finest orchestras of the world: their performance is close to perfection. -- Highly recommended!
a massive disappointment.......2005-08-04
this box-set is reasonably cheap but even its low cost has not been a consolation for my disappointment. Given my tastes, this is "cold" Schubert. To me the worst experience has come with the "Unfinished" symphony. One of the most tragic statement in music history is transformed in a lifeless, boring, scholastic exercise.
Please give me back Furtwangler, Klemperer and Bruno Walter!!!

Customer Reviews:
Elegant early Schubert.......2005-12-20
This first volume of the Schubert symphonies offers classy, gorgeously played accounts by the Dresden Staatskapelle with Wolfgang Sawallisch. Other reviewers mention Walter, Beecham and Bohm and rather than dispute the merits of those magnificent conductors I would simply say that Sawallisch at his best, as he is here, is of the same standing. The sound on this disc is crisp but warm late sixties analog with plenty of ringing presence to highlight the spectacular ensemble playing of one of the great "Eastern Bloc" orchestras of the Cold War.
Rushed tempos and no competition for Bohm, Beecham, or Walter.......2005-11-29
I'm sorry to write this, but Wolfgang Sawallisch's Schubert Symphonies strike me as having rushed tempos and are no competition for comparable recordings by Karl Bohm/Berlin Philharmonic (DG), Sir Thomas Beecham/Royal Philharmonic (EMI, Symphonies 3,5,6); or Bruno Walter/Columbia Symphony (Sym. 5,9) or Walter/New York Philharmonic (Sym. 8) (all Sony "Bruno Walter edition"). Although the Dresden Staatskapelle plays at a very high standard, the tempos Sawallisch sets seem fast and breezy, and many musical details are lost in the haste. I expected more from this set than it delivered: Sawallisch is known as a sort of heir to Karl Bohm's musical legacy, at least with many performances at the Bavarian State Opera, and the excellence of his Mozart MAGIC FLUTE (Philips DVD or VHS) unfortuneatly does not apply here.
I would recommmend listeners go with Bohm/Berlin (DG, budget priced); Beecham/RPO (EMI, mid price); or the Walter releases (Sony, mid-price). There are also some fine recordings of Schubert 1,2,3,4, and 6 by Michael Halasz/Failoni Orchestra (Naxos), and Ormandy/Philadelphia in Schubert 4 (Sony "Essential Classics") is also very fine. There are other options, which I would recommend over this release.
Average.......2004-10-17
Sorry to say, I cannot agree with the other reviewer on the overall excellence of this recording. I find Sawallich tends to overdo the music in its dramatic moments, a sin he commits most blatantly in the opening movement of the "Tragic" Symphony No.4. The sobriquet "tragic" seems to Sawallich to mean "fast and dramatic". To others, it indicates something much different.
There is little in anything on the second CD of this set that compares with what I've heard of the better Schubert sets by Karajan, Bohm and Abbado. The first CD is better, however. In particular, Sawallich and his Dresden forces find a youthful sweep and majesty in the Symphony No. 1 and repeat some of that flight of fancy in the Symphony No. 2.
The four overtures on this CD conducted by Raymond Leppard reinforce his reputation as a specialist in Renaissance and Baroque music and his shortcomings in early Romantic repertoire. All told, I find no lasting enjoyment value in this set and am very disappointed with it. I hoped for better than this.
Sawallisch's Schubert : Passion and style par excellence !.......2002-10-05
These are extremely fine accounts of early Schubert, played with grace and style. I find myself in agreement with a reviewer (see his comments on volume two) who wondered how in the world Sawallisch has not been given more of the kind of praise other well known outstanding conductors have. As fine as his Schubert set is, Karl Bohm does not match the kind of flair which typifies the style of play offered here by Sawallisch and the Staatskapelle. Additionally, the sound of the Philips discs enhances the sense of fun and pleasure exuded by these youthful gems. One repeatedly gets the sense that this is the way Schubert should be played and enjoyed. In the overtures, Raymond Leppard does not really convey the kind of charm and spirit Sawallisch does in the symphonies. It might also be that the London Philharmonic does not have this music in their blood the way the Staatskapelle does. Sawallisch easily gets five stars. Leppard, if rated separately, would get three. Bravo the Sawallisch/Staatskapelle Schubert !

Fine Schubert Symphony Cycle From Bruggen & His Period Instrument Band.......2007-05-16
Period instrument performance classical music fans will definitely want to add this box set to their collection, which is a rather belated attempt by Philips to offer Bruggen's Schubert symphony cycle and reap some financial rewards from the fact that his period instrument band still remains one of the most popular ensembles of its kind world-wide. Having heard only a few of the recordings (These date from the early to mid 1990s), and not the entire cycle itself, I have to confine my remarks to them only. However, I was quite surprised to hear extremely well-played, intriguing performances of Schubert's 6th, 8th and 9th symphonies. Of these performances, the great 9th symphony in C major is in a class unto itself, as one of the best recordings I have heard of this symphony. Here Bruggen has opted for slightly slower tempi, but both his pacing and the elegant phrasing he obtains from the Orchestra of the 18th Century - especially its winds and strings - makes much sense. There are no sudden shifts in tempi, but instead, a regal, inspiring account of this work. However, as much as I am impressed by the quality of the recordings I've heard, I can recommend this set only as an alternative. Musically, both Abbado and especially, Harnoncourt, have some interesting things to say about Schubert's symphonic scores in their respective cycles with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe (Deutsche Grammophon) and Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (Teldec/Warner Classics). Either one I'd regard as more desirable for someone searching for a definitive cycle of Schubert's symphonies.

Lyrical and Imaginative.......2006-01-06
Zender shows great insights on how Schubert is different from Beethoven or Mozart, in an absolutely beautiful way. His (or Schubert's) vision is fully realized by top-class playing by the SWR Orchestra. The set contains very imaginative version of 4th (you can almost visualize a man walking in haste in winter blizzard), and one of the most lyrical accounts of Unfinished, which I liked better than the harsh performance by Kleiber. Early symphonies are witty and playful in a very Viennese way.
A Fine Traversal of Schubert's Eight.......2005-09-02
I've lived with these performances for a while now and am prepared to say that for the most part, I am very satisfied with Hans Zender's Schubert. One thing is certain: Hanssler's usually high production values are everywhere in evidence. The box is handsomely presented with good notes, including an interesting interview with Zender himself. And the recording is first-rate; it's crisp and clear with impact galore, so Schubert's often sparkling wind writing and those important brass and drum utterances shine through. Not to slight the strings: they have just the right sheen to them. While the recordings were made over a number of years and in several different venues, the clarity and sense of presence don't really vary much. Maybe the Fourth Symphony, recorded first, has a touch less crispness, but just the merest touch at that.
Now to the performances. Not so coincidentally, the Fourth Symphony is the most problematic, but still, this is an OK performance. It's just that the middle movements are played a little more slowly than is usually the case, Zender ignoring Schubert's tempo markings. As for the second movement, this may be a good thing. Taking it slightly slower than the original andante marking adds to the poignancy and beauty of Schubert's big melody. After all, Schubert himself gave this symphony its nickname "Tragic." But then Zender extends the portentousness to the third movement; here, the allegretto tempo that Zender takes instead of Schubert's vivace fails to build contrast and just makes the movement sound pedestrian and plodding--a big mistake. The last movement, too, is taken more slowly than some conductors do, but this just lets Zender build additional drama into the climactic sections, such as the bridge to the codetta, so he somewhat redeems himself here.
However, I have no quibbles with the tempi that Zender takes elsewhere. His interpretations mostly seem a model of sensibleness. Take the Great C Major Symphony. (It's usually numbered Nine, but in this collection numbered Eight, supposedly according to the latest Schubert scholarship. I guess this just means that the Symphony in E, D. 729, sometimes called the Seventh, is now to be lumped with Schubert's fragmentary symphonic works, even though it is a complete, four-movement work lacking only complete orchestration). Here, if you want to experience the "heavenly length" that Schumann rhapsodized about, you have to seek out one of the single-disc versions. Zender doesn't take the repeats, so Schubert's usually hour-long symphony is condensed to a businesslike forty-nine minutes. Otherwise, however, Zender approaches the symphony with sensitivity, letting Schubert's grand gestures breathe properly. The codas to the first and last movements, often either rushed or slowed annoyingly, are perfectly proportioned here, I think. Too, in the development section of the first movement, Zender takes the opening just a trifle slowly so that the delicious dialog for winds unfolds tellingly. Slight accelerandos here and there correspond with climaxes and seem well judged. The Andante is very much con moto as Schubert requests, but there is a nice contrast between the classical-sounding major-key music that purls along like an unperturbed stream and the minor-key exclamations for full orchestra that punctuate the work. The finale, repeats observed or not, is magisterial--just the proper hint of melancholy and world-weariness in the wind writing at the end of the development section before the juggernaut starts up again. Altogether, Zender's approach is flexible; the result: a very respectable version of Schubert's greatest orchestral work.
In the bubbling early works, Zender and his players bring the right measures of youthful energy and prettiness. I'm quite happy with Zender's performance of Number 3, my own favorite among the symphonies of Schubert's youth, and I can find nothing to criticize about the other performances, either. (The best individual movement among the early symphonies, the Scherzo of the Sixth, is given a whip-cracking performance, and this whole symphony is in fact treated to one of the best performances in the set.)
As to the Eighth, which will be many listeners' favorite Schubert symphony, this, too, is given a very fine performance. Again, Zender strives for clear contrasts. For starters, he takes the first movement at a faster clip than many conductors do; he's faster than Abbado by almost a minute, for example. In the second movement, the sweetness of the primary melody is effectively played off against the anguish of the minor-key episodes: Zender chooses tempi and dynamics that accentuate the odd duality that often exists in Schubert, but without exaggeration. Much is often made of the fact that Schubert's harmonies can turn on a dime from major-key sunniness to minor-key shadow without seeming preparation. But in movements such as the Andantes of both the B Minor and the Great C Major Symphonies, these contrasting sections form huge blocks that come together only by the sheer force of Schubert's gorgeous melodies. If the composer's melodic material weren't so memorable and so touching, we listeners would probably balk at the fact that such disparate material is yoked together in this way, like vast colliding air masses. Then again, maybe not; the approach seems pretty forward looking, if you think about it. Anyway, Zender's approach is properly Schubertian throughout. The subtle drama of this beautiful symphony makes complete sense in Zender's performance.
Overall, Zender and his orchestra bring a classical lightness and drive to their performances, eschewing the big-orchestra feel that earlier conductors imposed on the symphonies of Schubert's musical maturity. Clearly, in Zender's performances, the last two symphonies are utterances of the Classical Era, not proto-Bruckner. In this, Zender's approach is close to what I've heard of Claudio Abbado and the Orchestra of Europe's recordings on DG; on the other hand, Zender has consistently finer sound recording in his favor--and Abbado's is very good. I haven't heard the set from Nicholas Harnoncourt, but his well-regarded performances are supposed to accentuate even more the "modernity" of Schubert's music. I'm not sure I would want that. In fact, I'm happy enough with Zender to go out on a limb and say that, except for the less-than-thrilling performance of the Fourth Symphony, his set probably won't leave you pining for better-known names such as Davis, Marriner, Abbado--or Harnoncourt.

ALL 8 SCHUBERT SYMPHONIES -- 4 CDs -- HERBERT VON KARAJAN & THE BERLIN PHILHARMONIC!
IN A NUTSHELL: Tragically, Schubert lived only to the age of 31!
There are 8 symphonies here including the incredible 5th and 8th [the "unfinished" 2-movement symphony]. I have heard many recordings of these symphonies, but what I like best about this set is the stylistic consistency of this entire body of work. For instance, the tempos are restrained while the dynamics are not, something which epitomizes the Schubert experience, and this entire collection is performed in this manner.
BOTTOM LINE: WE'RE HAPPY TO HAVE THIS IN OUR COLLECTION!
This 4-disk set represents an ideal way to get all 8 of Schubert's symphonies for both a reasonable cost and a consistent interpretation throughout.

Priceless performances!.......2007-05-16
Among the most memorable available recordings about Schubert' s symphonies, this set should be included among them. Wolfang Sawalisch was always a clever conductor with this sharp sense of the music conceived as continuous, where every single bar occupies its place as the pieces of a puzzle, it's not only a question of how the music be sound, but how it must be expressed.
Through his fruitful career this conductor who was born in 1924 gave us countless proofs about his immense musicality and mercurial display of skills with a variegated amount of composers.
And this set of works find to Sawalisch in plenitude of his musical powers. Delicate phrasing, sense of the color, taste and expression are depicted as he was painting a huge canvas. There' s nothing superfluous, you shouldn't forget the deserved fame he has as famous conductor of Operas. His version of Wagner's Meistersingers or the well known Carmina Burana (to my mind this is the most incandescent performance ever recorded) are enough motives to choose this priceless performances of the highest level.
Solid Schubert.......2002-12-05
Once again (as he did in his traversal of the earlier Schubert Symphonies) Wolfgang Sawallisch scores with tuneful, dynamic and emotionally satisfying accounts of these later Schubert masterworks. His view of the Fifth is flowing and fragrant. Ditto the Sixth, with dynamics and drama added. The Unfinished unfolds nicely, with appropriate shadings and good representation of both the wistful and tragic elements. As for the "Great C Major", it echoes with a fine balance of buoyancy and charm. I only wish there was a little more propulsive drive in the final movement. The contribution of the Dresden Staatskapelle is uniformly excellent, as is that of the Philips recording crew. It's hard to go wrong with both this later and earlier (Vols. 1 and 2) Philips sets.
Schubert complete symphonies vol 2.......2002-07-14
The composer Franz Schubert is one of my favorites, and included on this CD is the beautiful Symphony No.8 in B minor. To anyone who loves the works of Schubert, I recommend this CD set, the music is just beautiful.
Excellent Choice for the Schubert Symphonies.......2000-05-03
Sawalish's fifth is bright, vigorous, and graceful, especially in the slow movements. You get a rich sound from the woodwinds in this recording which is absolutely gorgeous in the eighth and ninth symphonies. The sound was nice, a little close, which is interesting as it reveals the interplay between the strings and woodwinds. For the money, you can't beat this: great conductor, beautiful orchestra, lots of Schubert.
So Right.......1999-12-04
Sawallisch is as great a conductor as any we have seen in our century--just ask any musician who's played for him. There is not a false note to be heard in his seemless interpretations, especially here with his beloved Schubert. The orchestra is fist class, with a rich, golden sound, anf the recording is masterful. This is a keeper.

Schubert rediscovered.......2006-02-04
For those who are used to the common non-period performances of the Schubert symphonies, this will come as a true revelation. A lean and very colourfull sound and the music is played with punch and wit. This is the real thing. Highly recommended!

CUT- UP.......2007-01-10
Very good cycle. Barenboim does a fine job here especially with the 2nd and the 9th. The major problem with this box set is that the 3rd, 5th and 6th symphonies are Cut-Up between discs. Search for another set. There are lots out there for just a few more dollars.
