Music runs in the family of Josef Suk: he studied with Dvorák and married his daughter Ottilie, and his namesake, the well-known violinist/violist/conductor is his grandson. Co-founder of the famous Czech Quartet, he became its second violinist; the Four Pieces are dedicated to its leader, Karel Hoffmann. Although highly respected and frequently performed in his native Czechoslovakia, his music has been unjustly neglected elsewhere---a great pity, for he was an excellent composer. The Quintet and Quartet were written before he turned 20 but already display a distinct personal style (despite some inevitable echoes of Brahms and Dvorák, their respective dedicatees), and a firm sense of structure, with imaginative, far-ranging modulations and masterful pacing and build-ups. The texture includes extensive solos for every instrument, carefully balanced ensembles and forceful unisons; the individual parts are extremely difficult, with much stratospheric writing for the first violin and brilliant passages and massive chords for the piano. The Four Pieces, written in 1900, one of the best groups of character pieces in the repertoire, demand great virtuosity as well as collaborative intimacy. With its soaring melodies, Suk's style is very romantic, ranging from melting lyricism to intense drama, from pleading, yearning, passionate ardor to ironic humor. Tinged with melancholy, these early works presage the heart-breaking lamentation of his late symphonies, notably "Asrael," written after Dvorák's death in 1904 and Ottilie's the following year. The performances of the Nash Ensemble on this recording are splendid. These English musicians exhibit an extraordinary affinity for Suk's idiomatic Czech rhythms and quick, mercurial mood and character changes, playing with eloquence, affection, expressiveness, and an invariably beautiful sound. This fine record, along with this year's celebrations of the centenary of Dvorák's death, should win a sadly underrated composer the recognition he deserves. --Edith Eisler

I've always had an attraction to classical music, however, I've always been so overwelmed by the vast variety of classical music out there, I've really never known where to start. I decided to finally purchase a CD of various pieces to start with, and started previewing albums on top of albums. After finally coming across this CD, I have to say it does have a nice collection (of what I could hear). Not too harsh, not too drowsy. I gave this CD 4 out of 5 stars because it doesn't feature as many of the true classic composers as I wanted, but I would recommend this CD for anyone who wants to buy a first Classical Cd.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD REISSUE of a timeless VaughanWilliams's classic !.......1999-11-04

At last Hyperion records (U.K.) have released a cd reissue on their current Helios sublabel of the Vaughan Williams' Five Mystical Songs and Tudor Portraits. Wetton (a surprisingly competent conductor for these days) and his huge orchestra are backed by wonderful choral parts (glimpses of what Heaven could be?); the soloist vocal parts are superb, thanks to Sarah Walker and Henry Herford's - two of England's greatest voices. The recording is quite good (don't expect the best from Telarc or Mercury, but it ain't bad either, especially in the way dynamics of the percussion and massive vocals are right there - rightly!). Certainly, a Vaughan Williams disc that is worth investigating. To me, these works represent sort of an 'overview' of the whole V.W.s' works. A plus, the Helios Series from Hyperion are amazingly inexpensive - considering the actual cost of a majority of CDs. Other great recordings of these works include the reference version by Sir David Willcocks, yet this one isn't far behind. We aren't far from Heaven, too.

In the past Josef Suk's music has been rather unappealing, for some strange reason, to me. This recording of chamber music (i.e., Piano Quartet in A minor, Piano Quintet in G minor and Four pieces for Violin and Piano) has certainly changed my previously held opinion of Suk's music. This recording is beautiful in every way. The recording contains Josef Suk's piano quartet that pays homage to and is dedicated to his teacher Dvorak. It is a work that one indeed hears alot of Dvorak in;however, it is through Suk's own individual voice. (it contains one of those beautiful slow romantic movements that could make me, in a live concert, want to stand up and let out a loud scream--because of its beauty-- then sit down very quickly hoping that no one noticed and called the authorities to have me ejected from the hall--you fans of romantic chamber music DO know what I'm talking about!)The Piano quintet along with the four works for violin and piano are lovely works--diffidently all Josef Suk; but they are wonderful.
The Nash Ensemble plays the compositions on this disc with deep insight and feeling along with the required bravura.
The recording is up to Hyperion's "Rolls Royce" standards.
If you love romantic chamber music,as I do, buy this album

          The String Quintet, a live performance recorded in stereo in 1978, is a lovely version of a lovely piece. But the disc's major historical interest is in the Piano Quintet, recorded on 78s in 1947 and once issued on an early Mercury LP. Frantisek Maxian was a student of Vilem Kurz, for whom Dvořák wrote his Piano Concertos. The Ondricek Quartet was founded in 1921 and still had two of its original members in 1947. In other words, this richly inflected performance is steeped in tradition and gives us a taste of Dvořák's music as it might have been heard shortly after the composer's death.
