Vagn Holmboe (b. 1909) is a Dutch composer who belongs to the generation that followed Carl Nielsen. His music, like Nielsen's, partakes of the broadest colors of 20th-century romanticism and never ventures too far afield from tonal constructions. And while Nielsen was a major influence in Holmboe's life, his music has a nationalistic character of its own. His Symphoy 2 has an arched construction where, as in any good symphony, the ideas stated in the first movement are deftly concluded in the third. Sinfonia in Memoriam (1954) comes right after his Symphony 8. It's a more troubled work--dark and athletic. Highly recommended. --Paul Cook

Holmboe is without question the greatest Danish composer after Nielsen, and we are fortunate indeed that he lived long enough to create a very satisfying legacy, including more than a dozen symphonies and concertos, as well as something like 20 string quartets and other pieces for orchestra and chamber groups. Like all of Holmboe's music, the Second Symphony is a tightly constructed, appealingly melodic work that's an absolute tornado of rhythmic energy. There simply isn't a dull moment... read more

Like all of Holmboe's music, the Second Symphony is a tightly constructed, appealingly melodic work that's an absolute tornado of rhythmic energy. There simply isn't a dull moment anywhere. The Sinfonia in Memoriam, as befits its title, is a calmer and more elegiac piece; two slow movements enclose a central quick one. The performances are up to the high standards of this series. --David HurwitzCustomer Reviews:
