Customer Reviews:
Very Good Compilation.......2007-02-26
Anchor's Aweigh's sound quality was the weakest but passable. USAF Band recordings were OK. US Army band and the Marine Corp band were good to very good. On a good stereo system the National Anthem and Army Goes Rolling Along were simply magnificent. All the other recordings except the few mentioned above were also of good quality. The Bugle Calls were simply excellent. We use them to teach our children the flag raising and retreat ceremony.
For a military family, this compilation is excellent, "Trinkets and Beads" brings back fond memories. As for the other praises, it may be difficult for a civilian family to appreciate.
Flag-waving excess...........2006-11-18
Patriotism,it has been noted,is the last refuge of scoundrels..Patriotism is too often just a cover for the sort of mindless excesses that bring on unnecessay wars(such as the one which,as of this writing, this nation is still"patrioticly"waging in Iraq)...Thus "Patriotic"music is,more often than not, loud, pompous, blaring, and one-sided...This is exactly the type of music one gets with the purchase of this album...Loud military orchestras pumping out old John Phillip Sousza tunes, which, given that most of these were written during another of america's imperialistic,"manifest destiny" periods of overt aggression, seem almost natural for airing to today's"patriots"...of course,Sousza is not the only composer represented on this album, but given the repetitious nature of "patriotic"band music, one can hardly tell the difference between the sousza and non-sousza entries..
Given that most wars, even the ones that can be justified as "necessary" are NOT exercises in "Glory",it is odd that"patriotic" music is never introspective, nor does it ever reflect the true nature of war...We do not get tunes that are somber,as death surely is,but, instead,we are given pulse-pounding flash,as if the only element in the"patriotic"musical repertoire is the hype to get young men,and now young women, sufficently carried away to forget that all glory,as has also been said,is fleeting....
Pretty Hokey Stuff.......2004-03-04
Ok, I am reasonably patriotic, but some of the stuff on here stretches it a bit! There is a fine line between pride in ones country and over-doing it with praise. I think we have exceeded that point here. Nothing new about these recordings, and they seem pulled from all over. One reviewer is right that these should be public domain. Just go to the army band web sites and download the music directly and bypass Altissimo!
Irony indeed.......2004-01-14
Some other reviewers have chastised and complained yet they fail to notice that proceeds from this album go to Military Families, and that it is endorsed by the National Military Family Association. I find it hard to believe that the NMFA would associate with and 'evil' company. I contacted Altissmo to discover that it is run by a Veteran and Retired member of the Armed forces who care deeply for the military bands, military families and soldiers everywhere. So before we jump the gun and begin to preach about what congress intended, let us remember there is nothing more American than a good responsible entrepreneur. Reflect on the offerings of this fantastic album before you pass judgment. Altissimo brings good music to people who may never have heard it with out their help. I am proud of my country and I think Altissimo is providing an invaluable service to the music community and to the Nation. Both this great country and this great album have my support. As for those filled with anger I wonder if there is not some ulterior motive for their commentary. If they would be brave enough to let there names be seen perhaps I would hold there mis-beliefs in a higher regard, but cowards and cynics have never served our country and they do not serve your customers either.
Patriotic Bore!.......2003-11-23
This is a mish-mosh of patriotic recordings taken from various sources. Hence the un-even sound quality. Some of this stuff is highlighted on other Altissimo! items already and is just a repeat here. There is nothing really new here, same stuff that is recorded on pretty much every Altissimo! CD.
