Editorial Reviews
Album Description
In her latest solo album Caroline Oltmanns presents an exciting mixture of styles with a new work of James Wilding, Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, Chopin's b-minor Sonata and even comments by the pianist herself. In the Moonlight Sonata Oltmanns dares to take a fresh look at this classic work with a hightened sense of enegery and excitement. Especially the last movement is going to the outer rim of passion with wild tempi and breathtaking structures. An overall very coherent interpretation with new approaches to tempi and energy levels. The Astroludes are a unique look at the characteristics of each sign of the zodiac. They playfully and with good 'tongue and cheek' describe specific traits of the twelve astrological signs. Wilding ventures into new sounds on and inside the piano to broaden the expressions of each astrological description. Oltmanns' interprets each of the Astroludes with a clear character in mind to form a playful cycle of miniatures. Sensitivity and virtuosity make this a wonderful addition to the piano repertoire interpretations of new works. Chopin's monumental b-minor sonata in this recording is interpreted in an improvised manner at the same time keeping sight of the large construction of the work. Dazzling pianism and expansive story telling make this recording an exciting, fresh and new approach to the work. The idea of adding comments of the performer to the recording is a breath of fresh air in the ever growing CD market place. It builds a bridge between classical recordings and the new DVD format and enables the listener to hear the pianist express own views about the repertoire of the recording. A wonderful idea, that should become a new format for the future.
