The Lamentations of Jeremiah appear in the old Catholic liturgy only once a year--during Holy Week--yet during the Renaissance and Baroque eras, Lamentations became a separate compositional genre comparable to Masses, Magnificats, and Requiems. The vivid imagery in the texts, along with the solemnity of Holy Week and the opportunity for "pure music" offered by the Hebrew letter that begins each verse, proved very attractive to composers. Particularly famous settings include those by Thomas Tallis and François Couperin. True to form, Paul van Nevel and the Huelgas Ensemble (in their debut recording for Harmonia Mundi) revive fine examples of the genre by two all-but-forgotten composers, Tiburtio Massaino and Marbrianus de Orto, alongside settings by the better-known Orlando di Lasso and Robert White. The dark-hued voices of the Huelgas Ensemble suit this marvelously melancholy music well; Van Nevel and his singers deserve particular praise for maintaining clarity of line in some very densely written music. (One notable point: while 16th-century Lamentation settings are usually performed a cappella, Van Nevel uses recorders and viol in the de Orto setting to alternate with and occasionally replace the voices.) Perhaps the Lasso could stand a little more high drama, but the plain-spoken sobriety of the Massaino and the suave solemnity of the White come across eloquently. --Matthew Westphal

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Other recent King's Singers' recordings on this label have reaffirmed the ensemble's credentials as compelling advocates of contemporary music. Here, only the most hardhearted of early music purists could fail to find the infectious cocktail of popular and religious Spanish music--largely 16th century--going to their heads, even if the King's Singers add the occasional theatrical embellishment. The music (much of it by "Anon") is organized into five categories, among them "fire" and "water" (with the alternative implications of ardor and alcohol). Of the named composers, none takes the ear more readily than Mateo Flecha the Elder. His La Bomba, one of several lengthy ensaladas (miniature music dramas), steals the show, with its comic tale of a bunch of sailors' impassioned but shallow prayer for deliverance from shipwreck. Elsewhere the moods range from pious to bitter-sweet melancholy--and just try to keep your feet still in villancicos such as Rodrigo Martinez. Those familiar, warm Harp Consort textures contribute markedly to the overall richness of sound. --Andrew Green

The King's Singers work their magic again.......2006-01-28

Having been a fan of the King's Singers since my teenage years, which are growing ever more faint in my memory, I am sometimes surprised that they still surprise me. And yet, they always do. There is something quite magical about their voices - not just their individual voices, which are all wonderful, but what happens when you put them all together - the whole is definitely greater than the sum of the parts. They have hit upon a great formula, which will hopefully be around for many more wonderful recordings.

The other thing I love about the KS is how well they do different styles of music. Their technique on this is superb - the pronounciation, the intonation, all of it is right on the money. Yet they also manage to "take off the viking hat" (as my choral director likes to say when we're switching styles) and do the Beatles without butchering them. It's really quite something to behold.

This CD is a great introduction to the classical side of the KS, and a definite must-have for any current fan. The pieces are beautiful and exciting, they all complement each other wonderfully, and the whole thing is just a joy to hear!

I am a huge fan of Renaissance music, and I have to say, this recording is truly outstanding! The blend, dynamics, style and tone really need to be heard to be appreciated. The addition of the Harp Consort to this already superlative group also gets a big "thumbs up" from me. And Stephen Connolly! Oh, be still my foolish heart!! What a voice! The most resonant I can remember hearing! The selections by Mateo Flecha will make you laugh out loud, but my personal favorite - at least, for the moment - is "Aleph, quomodo sedet sola civitas" by Padilla. The extremely musical performance and the chill-producing display of dynamics makes this piece sound like it is performed by a choir of many more than six! This disc is the king'singers' second release with the current lineup (Hurley, Short, Phoenix, Lawson, Crouch, and Connolly) and is in my opinion the better of the two. Paul Phoenix, k's tenor, has told me that he much prefers the blend and sound on this disc to that of Street Songs. The singing is superb, and is ably supplemented with the playing of the Harp Consort. This disc is also great fun to listen to! You will be pleasantly surprised by the variety of textures heard here. The disc starts out with a solo track by 2nd baritone Gabriel Crouch, and also includes small-group tracks as well as full-roster pieces. Anyone who has caught their April 2000 tour has likely heard "La bomba" by Mateo Flecha, recorded on here. It is obvious that the k's had great fun making this recording! Enjoy!

This is the third in the series of compilation discs assembled by Robert Aubry Davis, host and producer of the long-standing public radio series Millennium of Music. Where volume two of the series drew on music for the Christmas season, this volume concentrates on music for Holy Week and Easter; more interestingly, it draws from the rich and varied catalog of early music recordings distributed in the U.S. by Qualiton Imports under the "Gioia Antiqua" imprint. Possibly the most valuable thing about this is that it features lesser-known performers right alongside well-established, highly respected groups such as the Orlando Consort and the Bach Collegium Japan (both in fine form here). Of course, with such a variety of lesser-known ensembles and small labels, this juxtaposition flatters some of these artists more than others. Some appear quite impressive (Schola Gregoriana Pragensis and Ensemble Daedalus, for example); others seem not ready for prime time (Westfälische Kantorei and the Spanish choir Musica Ficta). A particular treat is a medieval motet played by the legendary Dutch recorder trio Sour Cream (one of whose members was conductor Frans Brüggen). On a reasonably priced compilation disc like this, variable quality isn't a major drawback--use it to explore, find what appeals to you, and go on from there. Spiritually Moving.......2006-02-13

A beautiful selection of mostly choral pieces from the Baroque and pre-Baroque era. The choices are a mix of the familiar and unfamiliar which make listening to this a pleasure. Chosen for the Easter season, the selections are spiritually moving and will put you in touch with all that is sacred and holy. Performance is impeccable and the sound is rich, resonating with the lofty space of a cathedral.

The Lamentations of Jeremiah appear in the old Catholic liturgy only once a year--during Holy Week--yet during the Renaissance and Baroque eras, Lamentations became a separate compositional genre comparable to Masses, Magnificats, and Requiems. The vivid imagery in the texts, along with the solemnity of Holy Week and the opportunity for "pure music" offered by the Hebrew letter that begins each verse, proved very attractive to composers. Particularly famous settings include those by Thomas Tallis and François Couperin. True to form, Paul van Nevel and the Huelgas Ensemble (in their debut recording for Harmonia Mundi) revive fine examples of the genre by two all-but-forgotten composers, Tiburtio Massaino and Marbrianus de Orto, alongside settings by the better-known Orlando di Lasso and Robert White. The dark-hued voices of the Huelgas Ensemble suit this marvelously melancholy music well; Van Nevel and his singers deserve particular praise for maintaining clarity of line in some very densely written music. (One notable point: while 16th-century Lamentation settings are usually performed a cappella, Van Nevel uses recorders and viol in the de Orto setting to alternate with and occasionally replace the voices.) Perhaps the Lasso could stand a little more high drama, but the plain-spoken sobriety of the Massaino and the suave solemnity of the White come across eloquently. --Matthew Westphal

Paul van Nevel and his Huelgas Ensemble have produced many spectacular recordings of Renaissance polyphony. His "Lamentations" is one of the most beautiful and moving.

Many composers have set the Lamentations of Jeremiah to music; this CD features the works of three masters from different corners of Europe: Orlando di Lasso, Marbrianus de Orto, Tiburtio Massaino, and RObert White.

As always the voices of the Huelgas Ensemble are beautiful, but in this recording they sound more powerful and confident than ever. Although Phil Spector was known for his "wall of sound," the entirely different oeuvre of van Nevel gives an even more three-dimensional quality.
