Tchaikovsky: Piano Trio, Op. 50; Arensky: Piano Trio, Op. 32

Tchaikovsky's monstrous piano trio is a musical memorial to a deceased colleague. It consists of two big movements: an introductory elegy, and a vast theme and variations in which the last variation takes on the character of an independent finale. At nearly 50 minutes in length, and given the sectional form of that huge second movement, it's a very tough piece to hold together, and back in the musicological Dark Ages chamber groups used to make some cuts to try to shorten it. Now we don't do that sort of thing, which doesn't make it any easier to play. This performance, led by Vladimir Ashkenazy's son (himself a very capable pianist), is simply the finest available, and with the lovely Arensky Trio tossed in and the whole package offered at budget price, it's simply irresistible. --David Hurwitz

4 out of 5 stars Highly professional, but lacking in passion.......2007-07-17

The presence of a Russian virtuoso like Yefim Bronfman should have guaranteed genuine Slavic passion in the great Tchaikovsky Piano Trio, but Bronfman has increasingly been playing it safe. What is this tendency for star musicians in this country like Perlman, Ax, Midori, and now Bronfman to rest on their laurels? Comparison to the impassioned live performance from Argerich-Kremer-Maisky on DG makes this version of the Tchaikovsky sound half asleep.

Naturally the playing is altogether professional, and Sony has provided adequate sonics (though not a patch on the riveting DG sound). However, without total commitment on everyone's part, the Tchaikovsky Trio suffers from sprawl and waywardness, as it does here form time to time. In all, a good performance that misses the mrk for being something really special.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful, highly recommended.......2003-06-19

There are several passable recordings of these trios, but I can finally say this is the one I wish to keep. The passion runs deep and the flaws are hard to find in this recording. (Note: I am heavily influenced by the rendition of the Tchaikovsky, less by the Arensky). Every other recording I have encountered left me wishing for more, and I listened to this one expecting to be disappointed, just I as had been with all others. I was instead left feeling quite satisfied. Some specific points: in the Tchaikovsky, the 3rd variation of the second movement, with perhaps the most exposed piano passages of the piece, Bronfman plays it with such brilliant precision that one is scarcely aware of how treacherous those passages are. Furthermore, the ensemble playing is precise every single step of the way, it never ever gets in the way of the intepretation (which is my gripe with almost every other recording). Also, in the re-statement of the main theme in the last variation, the performers choose to drive the tempo forcefully and passionately, instead of slowing it to a weepy mess as others choose to do. The result is a very satisfying ending. Bravo.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not quite top drawer.......1998-09-21

Yes, Tchaikovsky did write a piano trio . . . and here it is coupled with the inventive Arensky trio, his opus 32. If you have never heard the Tchaikovsky trio before, you are in for a treat. Listen to the work a few times, and the melodies will stick in your ear, and you'll wonder how you had gotten along not knowing them. This performance is beautifully recorded by the Naxos engineers. The piano playing by Ashkenazy (that's Vovka, not Vladimir) is understated and elegant. But one could wish for a bit more attack and attention to phrasing from both the violinist and the cellist. In comparison to the old vinyl recording by the Beaux Arts Trio (Philips 6500132), these deficiencies become more evident. Perhaps additional rehearsal time would have been helpful. Nevertheless, this is a highly listenable recording--and sure to please.

      4 out of 5 stars A masterpiece........2000-09-20

The Tchaikovsky Trio is a masterpiece -- one of the most beautiful pieces of chamber music ever written. Tchaikovsky wrote this work in memory of his mentor and friend Nicholas Rubinstein and -- perhaps for this highly-emotional reason -- he pored all of his considerable genius into it. If you are not familiar with this beautiful work please give it a try. You may find that you love it as much as I do. The Arensky Trio is less inspired and accounts for the four-star rating. The performances by the Rembrandt Trio are quite good -- especially in the case of the Tchaikovsky Trio.
