George Lloyd: Symphony No. 5

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The Fifth Symphony is a flaming masterpiece. It begins with a gorgeous pastoral scored for small orchestra (without trumpets, trombones and percussion), followed by a solemn chorale for brass, winds, percussion and lower strings. The central movement is a gossamer scherzo in quick waltz tempo, with a sorrowful slow movement (shades of Tchaikovsky!) next and a zippy finale to round things off in high spirits. The orchestration is absolutely luminous, the tunes first rate, and the whole thing adds up to as fine a Romantic symphony as you'll ever hear. No rational fan of classical music will be able to resist this marvelous piece, and both the performance and recording are a fine as the music itself. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars Two and a half hours of divine music...what more can I say?.......2006-02-27

Well, a lot! And since no one else has taken the trouble to review my favorite Adagios collection, I'm just gonna hafta go an' do it myself, won't I?

Starting with the stunningly gorgeous 'Jesu, joy of man's desiring' by Bach, this tape reels you in instantly. I'm not much of a fan of 'slow' and 'peaceful' music; I like the beautiful, sublime type that just makes you tingle all over whenever you hear it. (If only Canon in D was in this tape my cup of joy would overflow) Anyway, don't stop listening because Delibes' 'Flower Duet' comes soon after and it is the very meaning of divine. I listen to the taoe just to hear that one song over and over--but not too much, or it'll loose it's touch. This is a Opera duet (sorry, don't know technical terms, my passion is music, not the science of) sung by two women, for those of you out there like me who know practically nothing!! Gorgeous! Sugoi!! (That's Japanese)

Ahem.
The lovely 'Ombra mai fu' (which, I believe Elizabeth Bennet's sister horribly sings in the BBC Pride and Prejudice miniseries) is another memorable piece (hear the previews of these titles, please) and finally, William Vaughan's 'The Lark Ascending' a sixteen minute piece of violin heaven played so expertly you will see larks flying in circles about your head--or is that because your noggen got whacked?

Well, as for the second CD, it wasn't quite as memorable, but it's up against perfection, ok? Brahms' 'lullaby' (yes, THAT lullaby) is really sweet and of course there's 'Claire de Lune', a favorite of the Adagios collection, besides 'Sheep may safely graze' and 'Air on a G string'. (Honestly, does EVERY Adagios collection have that one? It's not even that wonderful.)

But what am I going on and on for?
BUY IT!!!!

NOW!!!!

STOP THINKING ALREADY AND BUY IT!!!

I was very pleased with this product, my sister recently got married and I was responsible for the music.... I am happy that I made this selection, everyone was happy with the music chosen for the ceremony, I would recommend it to any one looking for wedding music

5 out of 5 stars A wedding minister's review.......2000-01-16

I just love this album. I am a wedding minister and many couples ask me about music for their ceremony. I am happy to recommend they buy this album for a wonderful selection of wedding music both traditional and contemporary performed by orchestras, keyboardists, harpists and others including a lovely soprano. One disc is traditional wedding selections and the other is contemporary. The selections are arranged in the order of a ceremony with choices for each part of the ceremony. The CD would be appropriate to use in a wedding if live music is not planned. I plan to add a link to this site from my website just so couples can check this album out for themselves.

3 out of 5 stars Great Value, Some Recordings Any Collector Would Want.......2004-05-31

This is a very good CD, but a better value for only $10. The weakest singers are definitely mezzo Frederica von Stade (showtune) and Barbara Hendricks (beyond light lyric). Battle's aria from Mahler's 2nd is exceptionally out of place. The CD opens brightly with Dawn Upshaw's version of "On mighty wings" from Haydn's 'The Creation.' It's a strong, colorful piece that takes a bit of a beating from her nasality. Sylvia McNair is stupendous, possibly even surpassing Anna Moffo (the authoritative Rachmaninof Vocalise). Elly Ameling is in her usual good form with this Faure art song. McNair shines even more on "Rejoice Greatly" from Haendel's "Messiah." This may be the best version I've ever heard and possibly surpass Kathleen Battle's, considered one of the better of all time. The Laudamus Te is the crown jewel of the entire CD, it's from Vivaldi's Magnificat. This is truly well-sung by Dawn Upshaw and Judith Blegen, this is the reason you should buy the CD and go out and purchase the Shaw CD in its entirety. Marie McLaughlin sounds a bit weak on her aria from "The Mikado." To be honest, albeit she's English, she's a much better lyric soprano for Mozart, Haydn, Strauss not English through-composed and Operetta.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty but dull.......2000-01-20

This album contains a lot of beautiful music. And a lot of boring music, too. But since not all of the singers are the same quality, let me briefly give an overview of some of their performances. I've never thought Dawn Upshaw was a very good classical singer. Her voice gets a little whiny sometimes and her vowels are abominably American. Sylvia McNair has a lovely voice, and the Rachmaninov is good, but I've heard better (Renee Fleming and Anna Moffo come to mind), and she makes the piece even longer than usual by taking the two repeats. The second of her pieces has none of the joy that it should have and is very dull, if technically good. Judith Blegen, Elly Ameling, and Arleen Auger are average sopranos giving pretty but emotionless readings of their songs and arias. Barbara Hendricks RACES through "Ach ich fuhls" like it was Lakme's Bell Song, and sounds HORRIBLE. Kathleen Battle is good but Mahler seems out of place here, but not as out of place as Gilbert and Sullivan or Rogers and Hammerstein. In fact, what is Frederica Von Stade doing on this album of divine "sopranos" anyway? She has a lovely mezzo-soprano voice. Diana Soviero seems a bit out of place too, with her not-too-pretty but more powerful and interesting voice.

All in all, if you can get past the blandness of the performances, the album is pretty. But I like my sopranos to be made of much sterner stuff than these.

5 out of 5 stars don't analyse, listen.......1999-11-24

My scariest nightmare is that of some one breaking into my house and stealing this CD while I am at work.

The selection of excerpts is absolutely pleasing.

Of course I am carried away saying this is the most beautiful thing I know. If you belong to those who don't let anything carry them away, don't buy this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Kathleen Battle and Barbara Hendricks were outstanding........1999-06-18

The vocal talents of Kathleen Battle and Barbara Handricks were far superior to any of the others on this collection. Kathleen Battle's clarity of note and the depth of tonal resonnance of Barbara Hendricks clearly outshone all of the other ladies. Ms. McNair and Ms. Upshaw, listen and take note.

5 out of 5 stars Never heard of George Lloyd? Try this!.......2001-10-17

The British specialise in neglected composers. Sometimes, when they are hobbling around on sticks and are hard of hearing, someone finds an old score in the archives and thinks, "This looks good. Why don't we hear it? Are they still alive?" And so their music is rediscovered and the bewildered old chap is dragged out of obscurity. This happened to Havergal Brian and to George Lloyd, though he was not on sticks and looked extraordinarily young and trendy with his silvery mullet. He was 'discovered' by someone working at the BBC classical station, Radio 3 and a symphony was given a studio performance. Someone else sent a tape to the boss at Albany Records and as a result, all the symphonies and much else were recorded over the following years, a wonderful achievement.

Lloyd wrote an fine cycle of symphonies, the central ones being the greatest. The fifth was written in the hot summer of 1947 in idyllic surroundings by the side of Lake of Neuchâtel. Lasting nearly an hour, it shows Lloyd's mastery of large forms. Each of the five movements omits specific groups of instruments, giving a different palette of colours to each. The opening Pastorale begins with a long-breathed, lyrical melody which he proceeds to develop. This material is never far away and the whole movement shows Lloyd's feel for a memorable tune.

The Corale is for wind, low strings and percussion only. It is pervaded by a rhythmic motif, sinister and benign by turns.

Next comes a Rondo which is light, tuneful, inventive and gloriously orchestrated. There is a particularly fine fast waltz melody.

The Lamento is the emotional heart of the symphony. The full orchestra is used for the first time and the music is elegiac and full of tears - and perhaps anger. Lloyd was in the process of recovering from shell-shock (or post-traumatic syndrome, as we now call it) after dreadful experiences while serving on the Arctic convoys during WW2. Does this music express the mental anguish he had endured? It is heart-rending stuff and very beautiful. The ending with harp arpeggios followed by string chords brings this fine movement to a mysterious close.

In the Finale, 'everything is brought in to make an exhilarating a sound as possible' as George Lloyd says in the notes. The music is very rhythmic and great fun.

The recording is excellent. The BBC Philharmonic is one of several BBC house orchestras and is highly respected - one can see why on this disc. George Lloyd conducts and has written the notes to the music. The notes themselves are rather brief, as with the rest of Albany's series, but they are sufficient.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Symphony!.......1999-09-28

This is simply a wonderful symphony! It seems incomprehensible to me why symphony orchestras don't perform this work - audiences would love it. I highly recommend this CD to anyone looking for an unknown work written in an incredibly accessible and romantic style!

Here's an interesting concept: two CDs of great classical music excerpts combined with a nearly 250-page booklet featuring a glossary of all the major classical terms (from adagio to zarzuela), along with brief biographical notes for all the composers included. The excerpts are all generally superb, the price can't be beat, and the liner notes should be informative to any classical neophyte--not a bad introduction to classical music's greatest hits. The set might have been even more effective if the music was listed chronologically (rather than by composer's last name), but this is a minor qualm. --Edward Garabedian
