Love's Goddess Sure Was Blind
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Loves Goddess Sure was Blind, written in exuberant and florid style for the birthday of the much loved young Queen Mary ends, extraordinarily, with a reflection on the grief her eventual death would provoke. It was less than six years later that the prophesied mourning became a reality, when, in her early thirties, she succumbed to smallpox. Purcells eloquent compositions for her funeral are acknowledged as some of his most powerful masterpieces marrying a genuine of expression of grief (Purcell greatly admired the witty, musical Mary) with a characteristic sophistication of style.
Purcell: Love's Goddess Sure Was Blind, Music, Simon Birchall, Thomas Morley, James Paisible, Henry Purcell, Thomas Tollett, Symphony of Harmony & Invention, Carys-Anne Lane, Libby Crabtree, Neil MacKenzie, Simon Berridge, David Woodcock, Helen Orsler, Anthem, Art Song (General), Canon for Voices, Chamber Music & Recitals, Choral, Classical, Classical Composers, Funeral Music, Miscellaneous, Miscellaneous Music, Non-Mass Liturgical Service, Ode, Requiem/Requiem Section, Sacred Music for more than one Solist, Chorus, and Instru, Two Solo Voices (with or without Keyboard/Continuo), Vocal

Infinite Felicity - Not.......2006-02-05
One of the greatest disappointments I have ever had in my life was listening to the recordings of Purcell's music that were made in the 1990s by Robert "Everything He Touches Turns To Dross" King. The physical impact of the recordings was comparable to a strand of wet spaghetti and it takes real talent in a conductor to make James Bowman sound so ordinary so much of the time. Particular scorn must be reserved for the casting of Michael George. (What is the difference between Michael George and George Michael ? Answer: George Michael has a voice that is pleasing to listen to.) Michael George has a tolerable light baritone provided the dynamic never gets above mezzo-forte and provided the coloratura never gets out of first gear. (It can be heard to good effect on Hyperion's recordings of Bruckner's and Faure's Requiems.) However, John Gosling, Purcell's miraculous basso profundo of the seventeenth century, he most emphatically is *not*. If David Thomas (the only man for the job) was unavailable then the recordings should not have been attempted.
The problem is that these dreadful recordings have Hyperion's imprimature and so this divine music will probably have to endure a purgatorial wait of at least a generation for a new complete recording.
I'm sorry to see that King has finished with Vivaldi's sacred music. This is a pity, because the amount of damage he can do in this field is limited; let's face it people, once you've got the Four Seasons and the Glorias you've got everything.
A new project for King is clearly required along the same lines. May I suggest a complete recording of the Telemann cantatas ? Then we can all sleep peacefully in our beds until the time comes to sleep peacefully in our graves.
Important Purcell Project.......2001-06-12
It was by this project that I made the acquaintance of Henry Purcell and his music. He just knocked me flat. How I love the elegance, gaiety and wistfulness (to name but a few characteristics) of his music. For this first Purcellian project (started in the mid eighties), director Robert King assembled a truly crack team of Early music soloists and musicians, he also provided extensive commentary in the booklet and wrote a biography on Purcell. This venture entailed the recording of the Complete Odes and Welcome Songs (composed for Royalty and festive occassions).
Only in the famous Hail Bright Cecilia and Come Ye sons of art away, the Choir of New College, Oxford lends it's support otherwise the soloists themselves perform the choral parts. Which certainly contributes to the intimacy of the recording. Robert King is certainly right in saying that the texts of these pieces aren't great poetry, but the music is divine (the usual flatttering of kings and nobles)! King and his team deliver an outstanding and important contribution to the Purcell discography.
My favourites among the soloists were: Gillian Fisher, James Bowman, Michael Chance, Michael George, Charles Daniels, Rogers Covey-Crump and John Mark Ainsley. Charles Daniels pulls this project indeed spendidly off with his solo Arise my muse. I loved the exquisite countertenor duets like Hail gracious Gloriana or Sound the trumpet and always Michael George's bass parts. But that's just a selection of the riches presented here. Afterwards Robert King went on to record the complete secular solo- and sacred music of Purcell.
valuable and enjoyable.......2000-01-12
This set will delight any lover of Purcell. Ideally, you will want all 8 CD's; but if you must pick and choose, get at least Vols 1, 2 & 8 (these contain, between them, Welcome to all the pleasures, Hail Bright Cecilia and Come ye sons of art). Volume 1, entitled Royal and Ceremonial Odes, was probably recorded before King knew for sure that his idea of producing the complete chamber vocal works of Purcell would be commercially viable. Hence, the separate title and no mention of the volumes still to come. But by the time the second volume was made, the future of the project was already mapped out. The purpose of the project was to record all 24 surviving odes and welcome songs of Purcell. (This project was later followed by a similar undertaking: an 11-CD set of all surviving Purcell's anthems and services - of those, get at least vols 3 & 9). By the time King was entrusted with this massive and ambitious project, he was still in his twenties. But King knew what he was doing. His assumption of the project was backed by years of research. He even prepared his own performing editions of the works he intended to record, and furnished sleeve notes for each of the CD's in his Purcell series (Later, he also wrote a book about the composer). King's notes are insightful, although his choice of vocabulary is somewhat peculiar and repetitive. The musical results are wonderful, by all accounts. I am especially pleased that King was able to assemble such an outstanding cast of singers. For me, the highlights of the series include: Arise my muse from vol 1 (an alto solo sung by Charles Daniels); Bowman's 'Tis Nature's Voice from vol 2 (although my all time favorite version of this air is on the Herreweghe); alto-high tenor duet Let Caesar and Urania live from vol 3 (you should hear Bowman and Covey-Crump blend in this one!); The sparrow and the gentle dove from vol 4 (Charles Daniels); alto-high tenor duet Sweetness of nature from vol 6 (Bowman and Padmore); an ornate tenor duet And now when the renowned Nassau from vol 7 (Daniels and Covey-Crump); and the glorious high tenor solo O how blest is the isle from vol 8 (Padmore).

One of the advantages of being Queen Mary of England between 1689 and 1694 was the opportunity of having birthday odes composed in your honor by Henry Purcell, the court composer and--in the opinion of most experts--the greatest English composer before the 20th century. He wrote six birthday odes. "Come ye sons of art," composed in 1694, is the best and most often-recorded one--splendid, high-baroque ceremonial music with a brilliant orchestra, virtuoso singing, and no hint that before long Purcell would be composing the queen's funeral music. And he, too, would die pitifully just one year after the queen. "Love's goddess sure" (1692) is less brilliant, more intimate, and totally charming. The high point in each work is a duet for countertenors--most spectacularly "Sound the trumpet," in which the voices imitate trumpet fanfares while the trumpets sit silent, perhaps in amazement. Munrow, who died young like Purcell, leads beautifully styled performances. --Joe McLellan

Simply Glorious.......2007-04-27
Henry Purcell had for years been my No. 2 favorite baroque composer, second only to Haendel (J S Bach and A Scarlatti were certainly great, but since I do not speak German or Italian, I opt for Haendel and Purcell).
More recent recordings of Purcell's works, however, prove not as satisfying as those in the 1970's. This recording of the two odes on Queen Mary's birthday were simply immaculate.
I've always found counter-tenor voices special and intriguing. The two counter-tenor soloists in this recording sang gloriously. Their voices were superb - not savouring of mezzo-sopranos' timbre, but definitively that of counter-tenors. I wonder why the more recent counter-tenor big names do not seem to own as qualities any more.
The soprano soloist here was great, too. In one aria in which the tune was taken by Purcell from a Scottish folk song, the soloist did come up with an airy interpretation that savoured of the Highlands!
I find this recording very satisfying in all respects.
Early period performance.......2005-01-21
In the mid-70’s two recordings of Purcell’s Ode “Come Ye Sons of Art” were made in London, with a number of musicians from the burgeoning early music scene appearing in both productions. David Munrow’s version, plus “Love’s Goddess Sure”, was produced at the Abbey Road studios in June 1975, being performed with period instruments. John Eliot Gardiner recorded the ode and the Funeral Music for Queen Mary for Erato Records at Rosslyn Hill Chapel in February 1976 (the disc has been re-released at budget price on Warner’s new Apex label). Among the soloists, it was countertenor Charles Brett who sang at both sessions, joining James Bowman on the Munrow disc and taking the role of the first countertenor (assisted by John Williams) on the Gardiner. The choir of the Early Music Consort includes well-known names such as David James, Rogers Covey-Crump and Paul Elliott (all to become regular members of the Hilliard Ensemble); the choir has countertenors instead of altos and sings without a good deal of vibrato, in contrast to Gardiner’s Monteverdi Choir, which at that time was not the period performance choir it is famous as today. Both recordings both wonderful instrumentalists: the Munrow has Simon Standage, Monica Huggett, Catherine Mackintosh, Duncan Druce and Micaela Comberti among the violins; Trevor Jones is one of three viola players, and Munrow uses bass viols (and a violone) instead of Gardiner’s double bass and has Christopher Hogwood marvellously playing the organ in the continuo (and some lovely oboe playing by Anthony Camden and Tess Miller). On the Gardiner, the Monteverdi Orchestra, not yet become the English Baroque Soloists, uses modern instruments, but with players such as Trevor Pinnock, harpsichord, and Barry Guy, double bass. Gardiner’s “Funeral Music” is performed with the Equale Brass Ensemble which includes Michael Laird on the trumpet and David Corkhill on the timpani (as on the Munrow recording).
Taken as a whole, there is little to choose between both recordings, despite some considerable differences. Gardiner takes the opening symphony at a very relaxed tempo, but then proceeds to outstrip Munrow on all the sung numbers. The modern instruments and the rather obvious vibrato of choir and soloists dampen my enthusiasm for the Gardiner somewhat, although I think he has the edge as far as sound quality is concerned. But Munrow’s soloists are definitely more appropriate, and James Bowman’s countertenor is here unbeatable. Personally, I also prefer Norma Burrowes as soprano here, because her voice seems lighter and more airy than Felicity Lott’s. The basses on both recordings (Robert Lloyd on the Munrow, Thomas Allen on the Gardiner) are rather stentorian; I would have preferred a less aggressive baritone.
All in all, if I had to choose, I think I would go for the Munrow rather than the Gardiner, but it is certainly worth making the comparison. In any case, both recordings are now nearly 30 years old, so one cannot expect them to sound quite like what they would do if they had been recorded a quarter of a century later.
Transcendental interpretation and performance.......2004-11-03
I have three other recordings of this piece of music, however, this is the best. I heard it first on vinyl in my father's record collection in the late seventies I think. The counter-toner duet on 'Come Ye Sons Of Art' and bass-soprano on 'Nature Rejoicing' are just superb and 'The Day That Such A Blessing Gave' is incredible too. All recordings have their merits, yet elements of this recording from the artistry to direction meld so well it is the best balanced in my opinion. A recording to lift the spirit and satisfy the soul. The very best 'sing-along' music.

Customer Reviews:
Not the best, but definitely worth listening to.......2004-11-15
A melange of performers and a wide gamut of musical offerings make this compendium of Purcell's music definitely worth the listen.
1. Dido & Aeneas--Not the best performance, but some parts really shine. The witches' chorus (I'm biased because it's my favourite part of the opera) is really good. Surprisingly understandable English throughout, despite it being a french production. And some of the smaller parts, really do excellent jobs.
2. So-so. I'm a big fan of choral music, and these performanes are unfortunately mediocre at best. The performances are rather uninspired and dote too heavily on technique when they aren't too technically difficult. The result is a somewhat pedantic approach to church music that could be moving or inspiring, but instead is just boring.
3. Not bad. Here, the London Baroque do an excellent job of playing poorly-arranged music. When several pieces are in related keys, the ear loses track of something having changed, and it all sounds similar. Nearly half of the tracks have the tonal center on G, just under a third have their tonal center on D. That leaves just under one-fourth of the tracks with different tonal centers. Taken individually, they're beautiful, great articulation, good phrasing, fun to listen to. But as a compilation, one tires quickly.
4. King Arthur--again, like Dido, really listenable. I'd actually say it's a better performance, there's more interest in the music on the part of the performers, without the shadow of being overly-famous like Dido. From a compositional note, Purcell's text painting is truly amazing.
5. Music for a While-unfortunately. Mr. Deller's sense of pitch is unfortunately questionable throughout this disc. His sense of phrasing is odd, and his choice in instrumention is unfortunate. I imagine that he simply didn't spend as much time with the music, because the last track, O Solitude, is absolutely magical. Difficult in the extreme, but really one to listen to repeatedly.
6.John Butt- Locke, Purcell and Blow. (sorry, I'm still young) Truly wonderful performances, definitely the highlight of the set. I'll say that Purcell's music is definitely better than Locke's, but I think that Locke's could stand performances on smaller, portative organs, more common throughout England.

- - 27 AT THE BURIAL OF THE DEAD (THOMAS MORLEY AND HENRY PURCELL.
Album Description
Love's Goddess Sure was Blind, written in exuberant and florid style for the birthday of the much loved young Queen Mary ends, extraordinarily, with a reflection on the grief her eventual death would provoke. It was less than six years later that the prophesied mourning became a reality, when, in her early thirties, she succumbed to smallpox.
Purcell's eloquent compositions for her funeral are acknowledged as some of his most powerful masterpieces marrying a genuine of expression of grief (Purcell greatly admired the witty, musical Mary) with a characteristic sophistication of style.
