For years, I have always wanted a copy of the soundtrack of The Tales of Hoffman. I had the LP from the 50's and it was badly scratched. When I heard that this was finally available on CD, I was overjoyed. And true to form, it exceeded my expectations as I now have a portable soundtrack which I can play in the car, in the plane, in my home. If you saw this movie and always wanted a copy of the soundtrack...this is it!!!! Enjoy it as I have.

I have not heard this release of the recording, but potential purchasers should be aware that it is the soundtrack of the ballet version film of the opera. They should also be aware that when it was first released on LP 40-odd years ago, Beecham sued to try to stop it. He said it was performed for a specific purpose - - to accompany dancers - - and misrepresented how he would conduct it for a regular opera performance.

The film is excellent, butI have heard the soundtrack recording and have to agree with Sir Thomas. It makes for strange listening. Folks looking for a good recording of the opera as an opera, not a ballet, should look elsewhere.

You don't have to be an experienced musician to recognize good music. This is good music! I would definately say that I am a beginner to the world of opera, and thus far, Les Contes d'Hoffmann is by far my favorite. The musicians make everything believable. When I listen to it, I can imagine everything that's happening. There is one minus, though. There is no libretto. I have seen some reviewers of this series give harsh criticism to the lack of the libretto. I say, "NO BIG DEAL!" You can download the libretto free of charge on EMI's website. I've listened to it with the libretto, and I find my eyes spend more time searching for the words than listening to the music. Download it, and listen to your recording with the libretto once or twice and then forget about it. The plot summary that does come with it gives enough info to spur your memory to what's happening. The music is what's important, and I is excellent music. BUY IT ALREADY!!!!

      André Pernet is the headliner on the cover of this "Les Contes D'Hoffman" CD and it also includes a "recital" by André Pernet--more like assorted arias from different recording sessions used to fill up the CD--but it is the best part of this CD. This is my first introduction to this outstanding French bass. It is really wonderful to hear the old-school technique and crisp French diction. You'll never miss that it not in stereo... The opera is well-done but the real treat is Pernet. If you like him, you may also want to check out his Boris Godounov with Ansermet.
