Schubert: Piano Sonata in A, Lieder
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
With this release, pianist Leif Ove Andsnes launches a project in which Schubert's piano sonatas are programmed alongside his songs, allowing the listener to here how the composer's large-scale instrumental works tap into the effortless yet intense lyrical sensibility that permeates his vocal music. Listen first to tenor Ian Bostridge gorgeously negotiate Auf dem Strom's difficult-to-sustain long lines (abetted by Timothy Brown's superb traversal of the solo part). Then play the big A Major Sonata's finale, and you'll realize that the movement is a lofty song without words. It would take an orchestra, however, to match the pent-up anguish Andsnes releases in the slow movement's cataclysmic climax, or a perky chamber ensemble to mirror the rhythmic spring with which he imbues the Allegro's gnarly imitative writing. Although Pollini, Arrau, and Goode bring greater dynamism and flexibility to this sonata, Andsnes' stylish intelligence and poised technique admirably serve the music and satisfy the soul. --Jed Distler

masters of classical music.......2007-03-26
A nice collection for the classical listener. Great variety of composers and the music quality of the cds are very good.
A good basic collection.......2006-11-10
With selections from numerous composers, it is an easy way to familiarize oneself with some of the most popular classical works and excerpts. A pleasant listen for the initiated too.
An excellent introduction to classical music.......2006-10-18
This is an excellent introduction to classical music. Well performed and presented.
Very Beautiful!!!!!1.......2006-10-05
If you are a fan of classical music then you better get this set. Not only is it very cheap, 10 Discs for about 2$ per disk. Now where are you gonna find a deal like this. I actually found mine chaper, $20.00 even and the music is outstanding. If you had a very bad day and very stressed out, just put in one of these cds, lay down, dim down the lights and just relax. It really helped me out.
Still Stuck on Beethoven.......2006-08-22
I just recently started listening to classical music so I'm certainly not one to compare or critique the quality of this set. However, I do have a few comments...
My interest started in this genre of music because I'm researching my ancestry in Prussia and this is the music of those times. Never mind my ancestors were poor peasants who probably never got the chance to hear such wonderful music... when listening to these CDs, I'm taken back in time... to a royal court in Europe... to another place in time. The music is inspiring, relaxing, invigorating.
I have yet to listen to all the CD's in the set. I'm stuck on Beethoven! Wasn't he AWESOME!?!
I think this set is a wonderful introduction to classical music!!!!!

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful.......2005-11-07
An excellent compilation of folk tunes and violin concerto adagios, played masterfully by some of the world's most revered musicians. Features modern pieces (Korngold, Barber), which are a personal favorite of mine.
Thanks you Decca.......2005-01-23
My daughter is a violin student of 7 years and she has played 3 or 4 of these pieces for recitals. I bought the CD's so she could become familiar with the pieces as she was learning to play them. Now I find myself listening to the CD's almost every night when I go for my end of the day drive to relax. My favorites are the Mozart Concerto in G, the Mendelssohn Concerto in E minor and Beethoven's Romance in F on disc 2, but all the songs are exquisitely beautiful. I highly recommend it.
Exquisite music for the soul.......2004-06-14
These CDs have the most incredible selections of music on them. Listening to the violins has enabled me to complete papers for my doctoral level classes without the usual neck aches. This is soothing, exquistie music for the soul! Lovely!!
Indeed a joy forever!.......2003-05-22

who rated it as "Highly, highly recommended." His laudatory recommentation, I must say, is found "well justified."
Exquisite collection & performances, unbelievable value!!!.......2002-01-15
"Over 2 l/2 hours of the world's most beautiful music." These words on the cover are very close to true. What an incredible value this collection is!! So many of these compilations of this sort are cheaply produced, and those "greatest hits" collections are one trite piece after another -- after a while one runs screaming to the stereo to shut it off. However, this collection is top-notch, and the performers they chose are masterful musicians at the top of their game. Every selection is lovely, each one unfolding after the other in a sublime slide show of exquisite compositions performed by legends. This is TWO CDs of sparkling performances composed and performed by masters. There is not a bad selection or a piece of inferior quality in the entire lot.
The violin is an extraordinary instrument that, when played correctly, can pluck the heartstrings and stir the soul. It is played perfectly by each puppetmaster on each one of these wonderful pieces, and the experience of listening to this collection is an exquisite journey for the heart and spirit. Looking for a fantastic collection of exquisite pieces written and performed by genius? It's here. Highly, highly recommended!!

Customer Reviews:
Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13
This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.
classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01
This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08
A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

This CD's main attraction for many will be Gil Shaham's velvety violin in gorgeous, largely off-beat music. Others will relish these Schubert works in arrangements that replace the piano with the expert guitar of Göran Söllscher, enhancing the impression of hearing Schubert's music in the intimate domestic setting for which it was written. Most of the works are short, melodically rich dance-based gems on which Shaham and Söllscher lavish a Romantic tonal fullness and freedom rarely heard these days. Sometimes that's a bit too much of a good thing, as works like the Violin Sonata in D veer close to the sentimental. But more often the players' flexible approach makes it hard not to keep repeating items like the melting Serenade from Schwanengesang, the sprightly Moment musical in Kreisler's arrangement, the German Dance, and a truckload of other delights. Shaham isn't afraid to linger over attractive melodies or to use portamento and other weapons of the Romantic violin's arsenal, helping to make this disc so compelling. --Dan Davis

Can Music Be Too Sweet?.......2006-09-14
Can music be too sweet? This philosophical question is worth pondering about. In the meantime go ahead and satisfy your musical sweet tooth with Shaham-Söllscher "Schubert for Two". This recording is a must for anybody who ever played violin and/or guitar. Mr. Shaham's rich and expressive vibrato is exactly how the vibrato was sounding in your young heart. Mr. Söllscher's sweet plucking will reincarnate your very first taste of guitar's sweetness, in a form of melodic exercises by Fernando Carruli. Your heart will ache with the desire to have back the sweet, innocent, uncomplicated, sunny music life of your childhood. You will love the "Arpeggione" piece. It will not sweep you off your feet, like the passionate, lush performance by Yuri Bashmet, but it will charm your socks off.
The booklet which comes with the CD is informative and engaging. It is full of fascinating details, such as the description of the now forgotten instrument arpeggione. This instrument was a hybrid between a guitar and a viola da gamba. It had six strings and frets like a guitar, but it was played with a bow. It was held between the knees! It is now solely remembered by the Schubert's composition titled after it. The booklet offers an insight into the music of Schubert and the making of this particular transcription and performance, as well as an interview with Shaham and Söllscher.
Creative and Original.......2005-08-09
Despite some musical limitations that I perceive in this CD,I still give it a 5-star due to its magnigicient overall qualities.
I bought the "Schubert for Two" recording out of curiosity, mostly for the Arpegione Sonata. An outstanding performance of the substatial sonata for the now obsolete musical instrument had been previously given by Britten and Rostropovich ( on the Decca label ).And I was really curious to see how the piece would sound with a completely different team-up of instruments. And I was really shocked.Shaham and Gollscher gives a first-rate performance of a charming but lesser-known Schubert sonata. It would be useful to compare this performance of the young Shaham to that of the veteran Rostropovich. In the first movement,Shaham reveals his impeccable sense of phrasing and makes out the contrast between the dreamy first subject and the energetic development of the theme. However, despite Sollscher's efforts, there is a dramatic loss in the richness of the expressive accompaniment section written for the piano. Thus, the first movement in this disc has less warmth and is somewhat unstable compared to the performance of Rostropovich and Britten. As a compensation, the beautiful Adagio is played with utter charm and serenity.Shaham's expressive playing combined with Sollscher's excellent sense of legato result in great warmth and intimacy that surpasses Rostropovich's recording itself. The famous third movement with its cantabile melody is played beautifully on both recordings. For the first subject in A major,Rostropovich and Britten's performance has a deeper and thicker tone. But Rostropovich seemed a little bit too "serious" in the 2 development sections, notably in the virtuosistic D minor phrase, making it sound somewhat harsh.Shaham and Sollscher take a more carefree approach to these 2 sections and are able to make them "sing" more, especially in the central E major phrase, which reveal Shaham's gorgeous,song-like tone.
If you intend to buy this recording for the Arpegione Sonata,it would be a good idea to possess Rostropovich's recording as well. You can't go wrong with the other works featured on this disc either. The Sonatina is also given a splendid performance (and is reminiscent of the duo's previously released "Paganini for two").The Serenade and Ave Maria prove Shaham's wonderful phrasing (but once again witness the loss of volume and depth of sound on the guitar compared to the original piano accompaniments). The famous F minor Moment Musical, imbued with a slight gyspy touch in this arrangement,is really interesting to listen to.And the German Dances, with their simplicity and easygoing structures, are very entertaining. The performance of the Waltzes are more frivolous. And I find the 3 Waltzes arranged for solo guitar are somewhat aloof compared to the other works on the disc. But in overall this is a good choice for all music fans, classical or non-classical alike.
Fine Performances of Transcriptions for Violin and Piano.......2003-05-02
Franz Schubert had the unique ability to blend the range of Romantic expressions with the elegant simplicity of the Classical style. In the short span of a song he expressed what Bruckner might take an entire symphonic movement to reveal.
Schubert for Two, a collection of transcriptions performed by violinist Gil Shaham and guitarist Göran Söllscher, captures the composer's intimate sophistication magnificently. Although the substitution of guitar for piano results in a regrettable loss of volume and resonance, the guitarist's direct contact of finger to string adds a wider variety of timbre. Schubert himself played guitar occasionally, and at least some of his works were published in similar transcriptions during his lifetime, so there is a sound historical basis for at least some of these versions of his work. Listeners may wish that the recording engineers had equalised the guitar more against the violin, but in so doing the natural balance of the instruments would have been destroyed.
Two large works form the core of the disc-the Sonata D. 384 originally for violin and piano, and the Arpeggione Sonata D. 821. Both are superb examples of the high Classic style, dramatic and lovely in turns, and all flavoured with Schubert's unique harmonic language. The latter piece was composed for a now obsolete instrument, the arpeggione, which was held and bowed like a cello but had the six strings and frets of a guitar. Complementing these pieces are a number of miniature dances, all played with exquisite taste. The CD concludes with Schubert's Ave Maria, showcasing Shaham's excellent sense of phrasing. The whole is a fine collection truly reflective of a Schubertiad evening in old Vienna.

This is James Galway's first CD with a new label, and it presents him at his most lyrical. Every selection is long-melodied and soothingly played, including an interesting transcription of the 2nd movement of Rodrigo's Concerto de Aranjuez. Who would have guessed that a flute could substitute so handsomely for a guitar? Schubert's "Ave Maria" is mellow and sweet, Brahms's "Lullaby" is nicely accented, and he's well-matched with his wife in the "Barcarolle" from The Tales of Hoffmann. Two bonus tracks offer the world premiere of a haunting suite from The Lord of the Rings trilogy, composed by Howard Shore, and a new version of John Denver's "Annie's Song," perhaps Galway's most famous piece. Along the way, there's a mesmerizing transcription of Ravel's "Pavane pour une Infante défunte" (originally for piano), a moving version of "Che faro
" from Gluck's Orfeo ed Eurydice, and more. Fans of Galway's won't want to miss this relaxing, beautifully recorded CD. --Robert Levine

Soothing..........2007-05-06
I suppose that James Galway is about the most reknowned flautist of our time. I would file this CD under the category of "light" classics. As such, it is a masterpiece. Not only does every track feature a beautiful melody, but as a whole the recording creates a mood of peace and calm. It is utterly soothing and relaxing. Of special interest for all of you "Lord of the Rings" is a suite based on thems from the movie trilogy. It has an appealing Celtic feel.
This CD takes you from the busy world and puts you out in "space".
James Galway's triumphant Deutsche Grammophon return.......2005-02-27
Fans of James Galway may not realize that he recorded on Deutsche Grammophon in the past, as a key member of the Berlin Philharmonic during the early 1970s; this CD is a splendid "return" to this recording label. It is a brilliant mixture of classical and popular music, representing Galway's uncanny ability of playing superb "Mood Music", aided by ample orchestral support from the London Symphony Orchestra. Among the bonus tracks are a new version of John Denver's "Annie's Song" for which Galway has earned ample worldwide recognition and a haunting suite from film composer Howard Shore's scores for "The Lord of the Rings" film trilogy, playing themes associated with the Hobbits and their beloved The Shire.
Some Good Galway Crossover Selections.......2004-12-28
This new recording Sir James's First for DG in quite a long time.
Is a selection of uplifting pieces of music arrainged for flute
and orchestra. Ably abbetted by the LSO and assisted by his wife
Jeanne, who plays quite well too, Sir James shows that he can
still play the flute and the tin whistle with more than enough
talent and feeling. While some people may condemn this as "mood"
music, I find it quite refreshing. Although I can still hope that
there will be a couple recordings of flute concerti comming from
Mr. Galway in the near future. I have never had a problem with
classical artists doing what is now called "Crossover" I think
it gives them a much needed change of pace. After all one can
only play the classic flute liturature so much, and Sir James is
not the first solo artist to make such recordings. His
His performances of the selections on this CD are all quite good
to say the least. My favorites are the "Barcarolle" and "Annies
Song" and the Schubert "Ave Maria", which I think is the best
instrumental recording of this work since Isaac Stern's violin
recording for CBS. Klauspeter Siebel and the London Symphony
Orchestra do a wonderful job accompaning him in these works.
The recorded sound is more than acceptable and I can only hope
that this will be the first of many new James Galway CD's from
DG. Perhaps Sir James can do a disc or Two with the London
Mozart Players as well for DG too>

If you have any Horowitz music in your collection. THEN YOU MUST GET THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS ON DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHON. Quality of recording is superb.
Horowitz: A Digital Legacy.......2004-11-15
This set includes all of the recordings Vladimir Horowitz did for Deutsche Grammophon in the 1980s, including his historical concert in Moscow.
While the context of his return in Moscow is moving, the studio recordings are simply wonderful. The sound quality is impeccable. The Steinway piano sounds warm but yet crisp and sharp. Horowitz still has plenty of power, and if you don't have a good sound system, you will notice that your speakers will literally fail, due to the overwhelming wall of sound that Horowitz creates in the intense parts.
The tender moments are just as exciting, as they are enhanced by the very quiet and clear digital recording process. Liszt's Standchen and Mozart's Piano Concerto No 23 are only two of a myriad of highlights contained on this boxed set. Having these high quality digital recordings of this piano legend is a blessing that you can't afford to miss. And at this price, it's simply irresistible.
For those of you with a larger budget, don't forget the complete masterworks recordings (1962-73) of Vladimir Horowitz on Sony Classical.

Possibly the best classical piano CD ever!.......2007-06-06
I have listened to many classical CDs -piano is my favourite -and this is my favourite CD. I have actually sat with my family and listened to Misuko Uchida's recording of one of the Mozart sonatas (I think the K540 adagio) against Volodya's and there is no comparison. If you only buy one classical piano CD buy this!
Horowitz...........2005-11-20
Are the acoustics here crappy? yes
Does Horowitz hit some wrong notes? yes
You cannot cast judgement on Horowitz playing based on this CD. He is THE pianist of the 20th century. Before some anonymous posters opine that he is incompetent they have to understand what the classical music community thinks. Not for nothing when Horowitz returned to Moscow all of the conservatories came to a halt and students physically fought to be able to listen to him. Keep in mind that Russia/Soviet Union in the 20 century was the epicenter of the piano community. Yes some of his recordings are better than others. He was more technically proficient in his earlier years. Horowitz is one of the only pianists who is not exclusively melody oriented but rather brings out the inner melodies in the other hand and voices. Horowitz is amazing.
One would think that after hundreds of years of keyboard playing the art of innovation would hit the wall of diminishing returns but Horowitz is an antidote to that. I am generally concerned though that Horowitz reached a height that might not be met by subsequent pianists.
Horowitz, the genius........2001-12-02
Absolutely outstanding. The man was a genius!
Horowitz - 5+ Stars, Recording - 3 stars.......2001-08-15
Horowitz at his relaxed finest. His lifetime achievement is clear in the mastery of his instrument and art in his music. Every note carries with it the absolute assuredness of the better part of a century of virtuosity. The Soirees de Vienne alone make this disk a must for piano collections. Too bad DG did their usual mediocre recording job...the piano is muffled and the engineer almost loses the soft passages altogether.
Fine Late Period Horowitz.......2000-03-30
Toward the end of his career, Vladimir Horowitz had distilled his art to the bare essentials. Gone were the leonine fortissimos and occasional hysteria of the 1940s, replaced with a new simplicity. This recording, taped in the living room of his New York townhouse in 1989, is an excellent example of Horowitz' late period. The Mozart selections recall the fabled clarity of his Scarlatti playing. Horowitz, 85 at the time of this recording, may not thunder as powerfully as he did during his youth, but he is as in command of his fingers than ever. Although Horowitz has been referred to as a Romantic pianist, his performance of Mozart's Adagio in b minor is classical in its' simplicity.
The Schubert/Liszt Standchen is be one of the greatest piano recordings ever made. Horowitz' control of dynamics and shading make it sound as if the piece was being played on three pianos at once. The two Soirees de Vienne are a virtuosic delight, and the perfect conclusion to a wonderful recording.
Highest recommendation.

Don't buy it.......2007-02-11
Ok. The guitar players are good. But there is so much extra noise such as heavy breathing, the guitarist moving around etc. in many of the pieces. I am only somewhat being humerous when I say I am suprised you don't hear the guitarist belching or passing gas! It is a very, very irritating recording of good guitarists.
Certainly NOT Relaxing.......2006-08-04
This CD would get an average rating if it was merely titled "The World's greatest guitar music". However, this CD is supposed to be "relaxing". Well, it most certainly is NOT. Some of the pieces literally sound like soundtracks to a movie thriller.
Very misleading title to an otherwise pretty good collection of Spanish guitar ballads. If you are looking for something to relax or sleep to, look elsewhere.
On the mark.......2006-02-25
From the time I first attended a John Williams concert 40 years ago, I have been a collector of Spanish / Classical guitar music. I often play, on a Ramirez, some of the tunes on these two disks. The selections are wonderful examples of the world's greatest guitar music. I actually take naps while listening to these cd's. The guitarists are excellent; I only wish Denon had listed their artists.
NIce Collection!.......2005-11-12
I listen to a lot of classical guitar (and other stringed instrument) music, and I like this collection. It draws on an unusually wide range of guitar compositions, which is a plus, and it's well produced, with good sound and balance - I think it's a better than average collection.
the most annoying guitar cd in the universe.......2005-06-26
makes me want to stick needles into my eyeballs for relief.....i would recommend buying this for a mother-in-law you don't like...otherwise, save your money

It's hard not to be impressed by Kissin's immaculate pianism here, his lovely singing tone captivates while the finger-popping pyrotechnics of the Mephisto Waltz are dazzling. Kissin's interpretation of Schubert's great B-flat Sonata stresses the lyricism without understating its tragic elements. The opening theme, pocked with little pauses and left-hand ominous rumblings, is wistfully stated, and the clarity of the first climax testifies to Kissin's masterful technique. In some hands the first two movements can sound unvaried but here they're differentiated in tempo and mood. Kissin doesn't flinch from the music's daringly slow tread--the pair take almost 35 minutes, or almost as long as some performances of the entire work, yet Schubert's "heavenly lengths" never outstay their welcome. The song transcriptions are drop-dead gorgeous, not to be missed. But the Sonata is the main show and while Kissin's performance is highly recommendable, don't miss those of Arrau, Rubinstein, or Kempff, among the great older masters who have tackled this work on disc. --Dan Davis END

Only 1\2 bad.......2005-11-11
It seems that everyone(a very small group of everyone in reality since no one cares about this kind of music anymore) is complaing about the tempo of the first movmt of Schub's final testament played by kissin. Tempo seems to be the ultimate focus of the amateur critic. I mean, the guy several blogs below(or above) wrote a paper with no issues beyond he played it this long while she played it that long.
Kissin does play this piece at a horrible pace, and the main problem with that, the reason Richter and kempff pull off their very different versions(in terms of length) is because they, while playing it at their chosen speeds, let the piece grow, because this piece, more than any other sonata I know, lives and dies with the players ability to make it an organic journey. kissin fails at this almost from the first step. It just doesnt seem to go anywhere, and I am a great admirer of Kissin, and do feel he has become the anti pianist to prof critics anywhere. This is not a young man's sonata. There is something, i do not know what it is, that a pianist needs to learn about life before he should, not can, should play this. Maybe it is because, like almsot every review here suggests, they believe that a slow tempo, or that playing anything slow, gives it more depth, piety, or that it somehow means more if you have more time to listen and think over it.
The main reason I do not enjoy Kissin's view of this piece is not the first mvmt, which seems to be everyones focus, but the second, which is the real gem of the piece. Really listen to it next time, man you will really hear something if you have never paid attention to this before. I was shocked when he completely destroyed the foundation he had built with the first mvmt going into the second. It was like listening to two different pianists, with two clashing views, again. this is not the music for a young man.
However, the Met Waltz1 is out of this world, really, out of this universe. He out horowitzs horowitz. this is the definitive version of this piece now, and the schubert-liszt trans are jewels of the lit and i am so pleased pianists are starting to record them more lately. Volodos, and Perahia both have released great discs with them and these are just as good if not better. For those looking to hear more there is a revelatory disc of Sofronitzky playing about six of them with several of the impromptus that is a ten star. I hope Kissin will record the Liszt Sonata soon, that is a good piece for a middle aged man, before they lose their chops, but have developed into something beyond a young man; Kissin is there in almost every sense of the word, but he is not even close to the D960.
Very mixed bag, but the Liszt is astounding.......2005-09-30
Despite the lengthy and fervent defense in the above review, Kissin's B flat Sonata starts off with a 22 min. first movement that collapses into a formless mess, in no way reflecting Schubert's molto moderato marking and allowing no contrast with the slow movement to follow.
After that, however, things improve greatly. The rest of the Schubert sonata is played with lovely lightness and extraordinary phrasing. The Schubert-Liszt song transcriptions are not as free and spontaneous as on some earlier Kissin CDs but are still masterful. And the CD is crowned with a Liszt Mephisto Waltz played with such stunning virtuosity that one doubts if any ohter living pianiist could equal it. Worth the price of the whole CD by itself.
Having offered this much praise, I must sitll echo others who have voiced their worry that Kissin has lost some of the artistic subtlety and depth he had ten years ago. We shall just have to wait and see what the future brings to this great pianist.
Kissin as a Pianist.......2004-12-17
Though Kissin is accomplished for his age, he is still a fledgling performer which was manifested in these performances. I do believe he gets progressively more profound in every release. However, Schubert's sublime masterpieces are a joy to listen to no matter who conveys them.
Another "one day" classic from Kissin.......2004-07-10
Reviewers of Kissin seem to have lost their collective minds, as sometimes happens when one comes untethered from reality. Oh so many reviewers refuse to reflect, reassess and admit that those they love simply aren't as great as they made them out to be: a crack here, a blemish there, a pervading dullness everywhere. Richter plays the first movement of Schubert's final sonata as if frozen in amber (25 minutes +), yet when he does so, Richter shows philosophical insight. When Kissin plays it, slowly yet spritely in comparison, critics remark his playing is so distended and ponderous that the first two movements have lost their arc.
Kissin gives a fresh, innovative reading of a piece and it's denounced as garish. Perrahia gives thoroughly modern, cold, distasteful interpretations of Chopin and everyone hails the ineffable qualities of his recordings.
Kissin exercises restraint and reviewers wonder aloud, "Where has the joie de vivre gone in his playing?" Yet when he pushes the envelope, Kissin becomes a portentous potentate with pulverising command but, by implication, not a shred of understanding of what he's playing. Richter unleashes fury when not called for, and his doing so serves to edify and break new musical ground.
And so forth. . .
I like both Perrahia and Richter (and also Kempff, Gilels, Arrau and company), but I have not fallen to hero worship as many critics have. Whereas critics make an attempt to understand pianists such as Perrahia and Richter on their own terms, no such attempt is made when reviewing Kissin's music - charitability is forgotten, lost, or discarded, and contempt, longing for what never was, and delusion merrily march in its stead.
The criticisms of his Schubert playing serve to prove mathematically that Kissin has unfairly become the red-headed step child of critics everywhere. As mentioned earlier, critics have chastised Kissin for his putatively distended, ponderous account of the first movement of the Schubert sonata. But his timing on the first movement is firmly in line with more recent recordings. Pollini, Perrahia, and Lupu play it in 18 to 19 minutes. Uchida and Sokolov top 20 minutes. Another popular criticism is that because he plays the first movement so slowly the sonata architectonically collapses under the oppressive weight of Kissin's artistic vision, since the second movement no longer stands in relief to the overly slow first movement as it should. This "structural" criticism is an interesting one, primarily because of how far off base it is. First, one could criticize all of the other performers listed in this post in the same way: Uchida, Sokolov, Richter, and Perrahia, to name a few, but no one dares mention that other vaunted pianists - whose performances of the piece have been positively reviewed - have played it at a similar tempo. Second, Kissin's playing of the second movement actually differentiates it from the first movement. He plays the second movement more slowly than nearly everyone else does, something he did for the express reason of contrasting the two movements and thus preserving the piece's structure and something the other pianists listed in this paragraph did not do, which - one would think - should have led reviewers everywhere to have apoplectic fits over the way in which these performers had single handedly caused the structure of Schubert's monumental sonata to come crashing down, but they didn't. Instead these nattering naybobs of negativism saved their criticisms for Kissin. But that's enough of defending Kissin: Kissin is more or less someone you love or love to hate; unfortunately for him, the latter is more often true than the former when it comes to his critics.
Having had a chance to witness Kissin perform this disc's collection at Carnegie Hall, I can't help but feel lucky. The Waltz is other-worldly. Sharp, beautifully phrased, wonderfully articulated, and skillfully narrated. The telling of the charming of Faust has never been so captivating.
After first hearing the third movement of Schubert's final sonata played by Kissin, it was weeks before I stopped replaying it for myself in my mind: glittering, ephemeral playing that speaks of the piece's surprising emotion and sadness - this was Schubert writing at the brink of death; all of this comes through. The first, third and fourth movements are all brilliant and I prefer Kissin's account, not by a long shot, but by a substantial amount, to other excellent recordings by the likes of Perrahia and Uchida.
The transcriptions are wonderful and having not heard other recordings I'll refrain from lavishing praise on them, but they really are outstanding.
This disc surely will not be recognized as an instant classic, but that doesn't stop me from believing it one day will, when a future generation of critics finally happen upon this disc's singular, definitive recordings of the Mephisto Waltz and Schubert's final sonata.
Terrible.......2004-06-20
When I went to Borders, I had no intention of buying a Kissin CD, but when I saw he had recorded the Mephisto Waltz, it instantly went into my shopping bag. I smirked, and thought, this will be terrible.
Previously, I had heard Van Cliburn and Vladimir Horowitz play the Mephisto Waltz. Van Cliburn gives an extraordinary performance of a mix between the original and the Busoni transcription. Horowitz, gives a horrid performance of his "own retouching of the Busoni transcription". Kissin's recording ranks in between these. He uses rubato and ritardando's in all of the wrong places. He reads things into the score that should never have been done, and hopefully will never be repeated. He never decides on a tempo to use. The 2/4 bars are horribly slow. There is a specific tempo ratio given in the score relating the 3/8 to the 2/4, and Kissin ignores this entirely. There is then a set of measures of 3/8 again, and it returns to 2/4. At this point, the tempo marking is "presto". Even Horowitz isn't eccentric enough to mess this part up by playing it too quickly. Kissin COMPLETELY ignores every single bit of musicality he could possibly have and plays this well over 200 beats per minute. With a bit more terrible pianism, Kissin finishes off the piece at breakneck speed.
Needless to say, my premonition turned out to be true.
Kissin's Schubert fares no better. A disconcertingly slow tempo and exagerrated "musical ideas" come across as shallow and immature. Overall, it's a poor recording of the work, not understanding the emotional depth of such a piece. If you're looking for a recording of this, go to Schnabel or Horowitz.
