Beethoven: String Quartet in B-flat, Op. 130 / Grosse Fuge, Op. 133 / Brandis Quartet

This disc, coming in the middle of a series of Beethoven Quartets by this ensemble, stood out when it was issued for superior performances and recording. The characteristic echoey Nimbus acoustic was tamed here to a realistic resonance. The performances, alert and vigorous in their response to Beethoven's every nuance, are extremely convincing. Most people these days buy their Beethoven Quartets in boxed sets, but if you're interested in these works (one Beethoven Quartet with its original and alternate finales), the disc is highly recommendable. --Leslie Gerber
