Lola Odiaga's recording of four sonatas and the Variations on "Gott erhalte .." (Titanic Ti-156) gives the chance to hear Haydn on an approximation of his own lighter, somewhat clearer instrument. Playing on a fortepiano reproduction, Miss Odiaga reminds us that the chord clusters that today can sound clotted on the modern Steinway are perfectly calculated for the ealier instrument. Miss Odiaga is both careful and ardent and worth a listen. While each of the works in this CD is unique in terms of its character and chronological place in Haydn's output, all are remarkable in terms of their great rhythmic variety, harmonic boldness and innovative sound and keyboard figurations.

I personally was delighted, and intrigued by the many expressive possibilities of the fortepiano. The technique needed here is one which draws together elements of harpsichord technique, and a new technique which made possible the implementation of new stylistic, and aesthetic elements, such as phrasings and slurs, and the manipulation of volume in the course of a melodic line, or of a rhythmic group. At times those changes were reinforced by dramatic, and sudden changes in texture.

One salient characteristic of the fortepiano is the clarity of its sound. This is directly related to the instrument's design and construction, namely to its light stringing as well as the lower tension of the strings, to its scaling (proportion between length of string, and pitch), its flexible sound board, and and its light and responsive action. My instrument, built by R.J. Regier in Freeport, Maine, in 1985, is a copy of a fortepiano built by Anton Walter in 1790. Walter, Stein, and Schanz were fortepiano makers of the period, all well known to Haydn, and Mozart.

Odiaga's playing is very bright and lively, and reflects the joy that Haydn expressed in his compositions.

I was surprised at the amount of color that Odiaga is able to bring forth from the model fortepiano. It's interesting to hear the pieces played as they might have been heard back in Haydn's time.

But this isn't simply a historical curiosity; the CD is rewarding on a purely musical enjoyment level and highly recommended.

These are middle-period Haydn sonatas, and therefore not his most compelling or necessary, but they shouldn't be dismissed. Even if they lack the concentrated inspiration of those miraculous late sonatas, there is still a world of restrained adventure and delight to be heard in this music. Lola Odiaga's playing, as ever, is wonderful. Her mellow-sounding Regier fortepiano sounds excellent in this music, and the pianist obviously knows every twist and turn of each piece, playing them all with conviction, poise, and taste. There is other Haydn you probably ought to hear before this disc, but don't pass it by. --Leslie Gerber

Lola Odiaga plays the Haydn keyboard sonatas wonderfully on the fortepiano. She is a true virtuoso, and while displaying speed and clarity on the keyboard never loses the sense of fun and wonder that Haydn wrote into these pieces.

Anyone who loves Haydn, or keyboard works in general, should love this CD.

(Supposedly she recorded the entire set for Titanic, but I can only locate three volumes?)

Lola Odiaga's ongoing series of Haydn keyboard music has migrated from one label to another, but always with excellent results. This Peruvian pianist has become a real Haydn expert, gracious one moment, quirky another, reflecting the shifting moods of Haydn's music. This collection of middle period sonatas will probably be completely new repertoire for most listeners, but there isn't a weak piece in the lot. The collection concludes with a sparkling Fantasia that's as much fun as anything Haydn ever wrote. Odiaga's is a wonderful series; I hope she gets to complete it. --Leslie Gerber
