Langgaard: Symphony No. 1; Fra Dybet

This is another release in Chandos's series of works by Danish composer Rued Langgaard (1893-1952). Langgaard's music remained romantic when the world was going either serial or Impressionistic. Or something. This romantic influence is very evident in Symphony 1 , Rock Pastorals, of 1909. The composer was only 16 when he wrote it, but don't be fooled (or put off) by that fact. It's exceptionally powerful and assertive, clearly the work of a genius. His Fra Dybet (From the Deep) is a short tone poem written in 1952, the year of Langgaard's death, played here with flourish by the DNRSO. Good job. --Paul Cook
