Mostly Britten

Britten wrote many works specifically for treble voices and this disc provides a delicious, delightful sampling of some of the best-sung by one of the world's outstanding children's choirs. The collection of songs known as Friday Afternoons contains 12 settings of various poems--lighthearted, funny, serious, silly--whose skillfully crafted melodies perfectly suit the range and timbre of children's voices. "The Birds" is one of Britten's tiniest, most poignant masterpieces. Less than two minutes long, it is a perfect expression of childhood wonder and innocence in the person of the child Christ. Other highlights are an impressive performance of the difficult Missa Brevis, and, of course A Ceremony of Carols, which these singers present with uncommon precision and musicality. --David Vernier
