About the Artist
"Mother Goose & More" was created by Gena Raps in response to UNIFEM (The United Nations Development Fund for Women). Gena wanted to create a CD that children would love and at the same time would benefit UNIFEM. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the UNIFEM anti-voilence trust fund.

Many talanted artists contributed their talent to the recording including Julie Andrews, Thea Musgrave, Kenneth Cooper, Peter Schickele, The 3 Flute Moms, The Irene Sharpe Cello Ensemble, prodigies from Juilliard and Mannes among others.

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

1 out of 5 stars Awful!.......2005-11-18

This is my first review. This got 5 stars and so I thought it would be good. The first track was a play on a Santana track. You can't even hear the words that they are singing. How can a toddler learn the words to this? I have no problems playing rock music for her, but I think I'll stick to real rock music and get a regular nusrey rhyme cd. Even she wasn't too crazy about it and she LOVES all music. I guess each to their own is the story here!

5 out of 5 stars The Most enjoyable childrens music.......2004-10-24

The Mother Goose Rocks series (especially 3 and 4) is great music for the whole family. Having 3 kids, ages 7yrs, 5yrs and 15 months we can all enjoy the familiar nursery rhymes while clapping our hands and dancing to the latest top 40 back ground music. The music all sounds like it is performed by the original popular artists. The big kids never complain that it sounds like baby music and they sing right along while teaching our youngest how to shake his little bootie. I highly recommend this cd if you occasionally get tired of the standard nursery rhymes performed the same way over and over.

4 out of 5 stars Fun CD.......2003-01-10

This is such a fun CD to listen to -- for kids & parents, hysterical, in fact. The Wheels on the Bus is my favorite track, with Where is Thumbkin coming in a close second. I also recommend buying it through Amazon.com ... other specialty stores have quite a mark-up!

5 out of 5 stars A MUST for every child.......2004-08-29

I bought Mainly Mother Goose when it was first released - before CD's were even invented. I had heard Sharon Lois and Bram being intereviewed about the release of their new record on CBC one morning - probably with Peter Gzowski. I had to have it so I bought it within that week. I had the LP and used to tape it on a cassette so that we could have it for travelling in the car. We all loved the songs in it and it always made you happy and light hearted. My kids are now 21 and 20 and every once in awhile when we are all together I will pull out the VERY OLD cassette and play it. When one song finishes my children, my husband and myself can still recall which song will play next. The record has all the classic little songs that I had heard as a child and I thought it was important that they know the same songs.

For years I used to buy this record for baby presents and all my friends loved it for their children too. Now I am thinking ahead to when I will have grand children - I think it is time to start giving this CD out to a new generation. I am going to buy 5 just to have for gifts.

I believe every child would love the happy feeling you get when you hear these marvelous little songs

Contacted Amazon customer service and was told that they don't reship an item a third time but that they could refund the price and send me a return label. I guess I won't be buying this DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Another Testament to Great Reissues.......2003-08-02

In this era of homogenized classical collections, it is great to see a label like Testament rescue gems from the EMI/Columbia vaults and reissue them on CD. And were it not for Testament, the conductor Desire-Emile Inghelbrecht would be a footnote in the history books. They have done a great service to classical collectors by making five CDs of Inghelbrecht's performances available (though only two are currently in print). While Inghelbrecht was at his best with Debussy (he was a close personal friend of the composer's), he also shined with other classics of the French repertoire. Unfortunately, Inghelbrecht's 1953 performance of the complete Daphnis et Chloe never got its due. Released shortly after Ansermet's version (the first ever recording of the complete ballet), it took a backseat to that account, then was replaced, as most mono accounts were, by a definitive stereo recording, in this case Munch's magnificent performance for RCA (see my review). And while it clearly can't go toe-to-toe with Munch, it is nonetheless quite enjoyable, as his 1955 mono account of the Ma Mere L'oye Suite. I am certainly glad I discovered Inghelbrecht for myself, and it is yet another "testament" to a great reissue program that I did.

    5 out of 5 stars #1 in our Family.......2003-08-06

I bought Mainly Mother Goose when it was first released. I knew I had to have it after hearing Sharon, Lois and Bram being interview on CBC radio about the tape (I don't think cd's were even on the market yet).
It was my children's absolute favorite tape and they knew the whole thing by heart. It was also my favorite. The songs are all classics that every child should know. A lot of thought went into the choices of songs. The arrangements are varied and appropriate to each piece.
This recording in timeless and a must have for every child.

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous tape.......2002-03-24

This is our whole family's favourite music to listen to in the car. Our son is almost 14 months old and we have been listening to this tape since he was two months old and I expect we will be listening for many months/?years to come. The great thing about Sharon/Lois and Bram is that you don't get bored easily with their music and believe me, I get bored quickly.

4 out of 5 stars Great, entertaining CD.......2001-02-23

This is not my first "Sharon, Lois & Bram" CD so I can't say that I am surprised at how good it is. My 9 month old daughter thoroughly enjoys listening to this in the car every morning and it has certainly helped to jog my memory with Mother Goose.

5 out of 5 stars Great music to listen to on car rides-very entertaining !.......2000-02-27

My wife is a children's librarian and loves this tape as she uses it mainly for her storytimes but more importantly plays it a lot for our three year old. He has learned many of the songs and loves to dance to the fun tunes. He sings a long in the car and listens to it when he is playing. It is very uplifting with happy songs to make everyone cheerful.

5 out of 5 stars Mainly Mother Goose.......1999-11-30

Here is a rare blend of fine musicianship and true kid-appeal. This is probably the best Sharon, Lois, and Bram selection for the infant-toddler set, though even my husband and I still enjoy it after hundreds of listens. My three-year-old loves the fresh, catchy renditions of many favorite nursery rhymes and other familiar tunes, and we love listening to arrangements which are interesting enough for adult ears. This recording belongs on a top-ten list for young music fans!

    5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-05-12

After hearing bits and pieces of this CD playing at Gymboree when we would go and play I always thought that that the tunes were catchy. I ordered it and when you listen to it at home, it really makes you sing along. My 11 month old also dances to the beat! I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars some really good songs,,,and then some others.......2007-03-07

I have been trying to find a fun kids' CD for me and my boys. This one was recommended- a couple of the songs are really catchy and fun (we listen to two of the songs over and over again). But, I definitely don't like the majority of the songs. Some just don't sound like kids' music. I would like to hear the other CDs in this collection, hoping that the others might have a greater number of upbeat, fun songs for kids.

5 out of 5 stars Every Kid Needs This............2002-04-29

Working in radio for 10 years, I never experience the joy of music until this cd came along!!! As a Christian mother, I always check my child's music before I allow him or her to listen it. This is a great way to get the old classic's redone in a NEW and FRESH "hip" kind of way! Way to go to the makers of this album! YOU TRULY ROCK!
