Because of his personal charisma, we tend to think that Leonard Bernstein was dashing and extroverted in everything he conducted. But as this 1962 Brahms Fourth shows, he could be quite conventional, particularly in Beethoven and Brahms. Everything goes well, and the overall performance is satisfying, but it's not intense or gripping. Not until the rollicking Scherzo did I feel very involved, after two middle-of-the-road movements, and then the finale goes back there. It needs a tragic dimension and inner turbulence, both lacking despite fine execution by the NY Phil. The recorded soun is rather distant and lacking in dynamism.

Fortunately, LB kpet growing, and by the time he recorded his second Brahms cycle for DG in Vienna, his intenisty and concentration had doubled. Some critics call those latter readings eccentric, but to me they are personal and quite gripping. As for the overtures from the two following years, the Academic Festival Over. is much better recorded than the Fourth and carries the stamp of the conductor's ebullience--it's very fine. At the same level we get a Tragic Over. that's robust and propulsive, with nie roughness around the edges--another winner. I agree with the reviewer below who gives them five stars.

This is a good lyrical account of the Fourth and although it doesn't knock other famous interpretations off their pedestals, it deserves a place on the shelf of anyone who likes this work. The compressed sound quality compromises it to some extent but you soon forget this as you become involved with the performance. The two overtures though are very good, especially the Tragic - taut, fiery, highly dramatic, and Bernstein doesn't draw out the slower sections to the point of boredom as do Karajan and certain others. Setting the symphony aside, the cost of this disc is well worth it just for the overtures, which incidentally have a much more open sound quality.

4 out of 5 stars A Fine Brahms 4th Symphony from Leonard Bernstein & NYPO.......2002-04-07

Admittedly this recording will not replace definitive versions of the 4th symphony from the likes of Haitink, Kleiber, or Masur. Still it remains one of the best recordings I've heard of Brahms' 4th symphony - if one doesn't object to its rather dry acoustics. Bernstein leads the New York Philharmonic in a dramatic, riveting performance that is almost as fine as his later live recording with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Along with Brahms' 4th symphony, this CD includes fine performances of the Academic Festival Overture and the Tragic Overture. Fans of Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic will certainly want to acquire this CD.

      10 CD's of beautiful pieces of classical music, digitally recorded for only 20 bucks sounds very good. I decided to buy this CD set because of very good price. But, what you will get for your money? Noting special, believe me! I was very disappointed with some performances, but sound quality of some tracks is even worst. Disc No. 6 is one of the most poorly recorded and engineered CD's I have ever heard. I can't believe that this CD is digitally recorded. So, forgot price and look somewhere else. I can recommend this CD box set to absolutely beginners only.

          I have a previous EMI CD issue of Klemperer's 4th Symphony which is complimented by the equally great 3rd Symphony. Some stores still carry it. This compilation, however, is nowhere near as great even though Klemperer's recording of the 4th is the greatest and most colorful I have ever found. Better recordings are still available of the Academic Overture such as Sony Classics' George Szell or if you want nostalghia, RCA Victor's Toscanni. The Schumann Overtures have a historical context since Schumann was one of Brahms' mentor but I frankly don't see how anyone could be satisfied with the overtures after hearing the intense, expansive chords of Brahms' 4th. Possibly Klemperer's recording of 'Fingal's Cave by Mendelssohn would have been more suitable.

          I'll settle for the older Cd version with the 3rd Symphony. That would would be the 'Klemperer Legacy' at its finest.

          this set was bought for me by a friend of mine, knowing that I love just about all varieties of music. I found this to be of real good sound quaility, and extremely relaxing plus it helped to put me in a good frame of mind, add to that that the baby I watch enjoyed it and was able to go to sleep peacefully makes it well worth the purchase. I highly recommend it.

          Under Kurt Masur, the New York Philharmonic has achieved a marvelously rich, dark sound that suits this music quite well. Unfortunately, Masur just isn't a conductor to set the pulse racing, and these very well played and recorded performances end up sounding dull. Nothing's out of place, but there's also nothing very interesting happening either. Given the fact that you can get a great Brahms cycle for less than the cost of a single one of these discs (Kurt Sanderling's, for instance), there's just no point in investing in these performances. --David Hurwitz

          This underrated Brahms symphony cycle has received some recognition in the annual Grammophone guide to classical CDs, which singles out the Masur/New York Philharmonic's version of the 2nd symphony as among the best out there. Indeed, I think the New York Philharmonic Orchestra plays as well as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Haitink's critically acclaimed cycle which they recorded for Phillips in the 1970's. Furthermore, Masur gives a warmer, more vibrant view of Brahms than Haitink. Indeed, the New York Philharmonic sounds more like a Central European orchestra than a motlety crew of brash, self indulgent American soloists. Aside from the splendid version of the 2nd Symphony, other great performances in this set include the Academic Festival Overture, Variations on a theme from Haydn and the 1st and 4th symphonies. However, I suspect that one major reason why this fine set hasn't received more recognition is because of some coughing from the audience; all of the performances were recorded live. Yet Teldec's engineers still manage to produce a well-balanced set of recordings. Although this set won't replace the Sanderling/Dresden Staatskapelle and Bernstein/Vienna Philharmonic versions, it is one worthy of serious consideration by those looking for an entire Brahms symphony cycle.

          Las interpretaciones de la Sinfonías de Brahms por Kurt Masur, en realidad no tienen nada de malo, pero tampoco nada relevante. Dentro de esta misma literatura tenemos versiones mucho mejor logradas. Antes de comprar Masur mejor busque una de estas otras: Karajan / Berlín, Toscanini / NBC, Bernstein / Viena, Abbado / Berlín, Walter / Columbia.
