Lucia has not exactly been neglected on records, and Andrea Rost is not as dramatic a Lucia as Maria Callas nor as vocally opulent as Joan Sutherland. Still, she is vocally satisfactory and dramatically effective, and she is supported by a first-class cast, notably the elegant Bruce Ford as her doomed lover Edgardo and Anthony Michaels- Moore as her tormented, manipulative brother Enrico. The primary attractions of this edition, however, are the period-instrument orchestra and Sir Charles Mackerras, who not only conducts a compelling treatment but has also taken the trouble of consulting and following Donizetti's original manuscript, scraping away a century and a half of "performing tradition"--i.e., changes introduced by singers more interested in showing off their voices than in following the composer's wishes. This is closer to the original inspiration than any previous recording, and more structurally coherent if less vocally spectacular. The recorded sound is very impressive. --Joe McLellan

I've heard pretty much all the great interpretations of this work on record. Callas is superb and a real favourite. However I heard a snippet of this recording a few years back...possibly from the fountain scene I can't remember and I was blown away. I finally got my hands on the complete recording and look it's absolutely wonderful...Rost is amazing and this is my favourite must-have recording of Lucia. Don't shilly-shally, just get!

This is what the whole period instrument ~ H.I.P. thing is all about - getting a great and familiar work and getting rid of all the cobwebs and debris the work has attracted since it was written.

The Hanover Band is in fine form here, doing early 19th century music so well, as they normally do [see their wonderful recording of the Schumann symphonies]. This recording reminds us of Mozart and the fact that Mozart, if he had lived, could have easily composed operas like this one, or better ones!

The cast is fabulous and Andrea Rost is the first Lucia to sing the entire role at the original pitch, without any transpositions. She is a fabulous Lucia and I hope she records more of this repertoire with a period instrument orchestra.

The men are similarly great: Alastair Miles (always impresses me), Anthony Michaels-Moore, Bruce Ford, Paul Charles Clarke and Ryland Davies (so nice to hear him!) are all here and they all do wonderful things.


Sir Charles Mackerras, the great Australian conductor, gives us a vivid and lively interpretation of Lucia di Lammermoor. The tempi, expression and colours of the work are brought vividly to life in this wonderful and exciting recording. More of the same, please!

This is a very welcome recording. Bruce Ford, much underused in mainstream opera-recordings, brings a very fresh and lovely approach to a role that has been used and, at times, abused by many tenors. Fords approach is always stylish, musical and appropriate. Infact, the only singer I don't rate on this recording is the baritone, whose muddy, blustery voice tires me very quickly. It lacks clarity and bite, and there are many better alternatives. I would however still recommend this set as a fresh look at one of my top-ten operas of all time.

5 out of 5 stars A Naked Lucia.......2004-03-22

"Why Another Lucia?" you say. Well in fact this is not just another Lucia, but the original 1835 version. I thank Sir Charles for having the good sense to return to Donizetti's original 1835 draft. Now we can finally hear what the man wrote, without all that ornamentation. It still has plenty of coloratura embelishments in it & Andrea Rost handles them with sharp precission. Gone of course are the high endings, but there are still plenty of high notes to get the blood rushing. The lower endings also sound more natural. Remembering that early sopranos were not trained to project high notes like our singers of today. Their strength was in the chest register. With a well balanced cast, chorus & orcheatra, Sir Charles has swept us back to the original production. Andrea Rost is a first rate Lucia and should not be compared to previous Lucias, like (our) Joan Sutherland, Calas or the likes, as she is performing a completely different opera, one where there is no rival. Caballé did do a straight version some years back, but that was so ...awful it should never have been recorded let alone released. This peformance, however, is so "Alive" you can actually feel the atmosphere of a full production. Anthony Michaels-Moore, Bruce Ford & Alistair Miles are perfect in their respective roles. The blending of Michaels-Moore & Ford's voices in the Act ll duet: "Ah! O sole, più ratto" sends shivers up my spine. The rest of the soloists are equally as good. The London Voices are extremely convincing in their role and the Hanover Band with original instruments; well they are something else. What an orchestra, under the direction of Sir Charles Mackerras deliver a chilling score.
I cannot stop playing this version & I thank Sony for bringing it to us.
I do want to say that I still love the Joan Sutherland version, but I find myself playing this Original Version more.
For those of you who cannot make up your minds which version to buy (presuming you have neither); I would strongly recommend this one, without any apologies. But we all have different tastes & I would not push my views or opinions onto anyone. You have to decide which version YOU like. I only suggest that you give this recording a hearing; knowing that it is a diffent version. Listen to both versions & if still undecided then bye the two & have the best of both worlds.

3 out of 5 stars Good Conducting--Singing is Somewhat Overrated.......2003-11-26

(By the way, I would actually rate it as 3.5 stars, but I can't give half ratings.)
Let me start with what I like about this recording. First, the conducting seems relatively well-done. Tempi and balance are fine, etc. I also enjoy the period-dated instruments (as well as the wooden flute used for "Il dolce suono"). In addition, the keys were actually left as in the original score--what a novel idea! The singing is clean overall, with no noticable tuning problems or difficulty with any passages.
However, there are many things I have slight--or more than slight--problems with. I think Andrea Rost has a beautiful voice, but she doesn't sound comfortable enough in her high range, at least not as comfortable as a Lucia should be. In fact, she may not be well-suited for any demanding coloratura roles. Moreover, dynamic contrast and dramatic expression seemed scant to me, making some of the arias sound slightly bland, having little or no "sparkle." This was true for most of the other soloists--none truly stuck out as dazzling performers. Ornaments and such may be faithful to the times, but few dramatic embellishments are found in Lucia's arias (which would be perfectly musically legal), and there are some disappointing cadenzas (at least, they were to me). The extra "oomph" tugging at the heartstrings of the listener is simply next to nonexistent.
All in all, this seems to be a relatively worthwhile recording, especially with the valiant efforts at achieving historical accuracy. However, if you want only one or two recordings of Lucia di Lammermoor, I suggest checking out the musical beauty of Joan Sutherland or the nimble voice and dramatic flair of Beverly Sills. The Rost recording may offer some new musical concepts, but isn't an essential recording in my eyes (or ears).
