Sibelius's choral music is deeply felt, nationalistic, and stirring. Subject matter ranges from the glory of the Northern lights (in "Oma maa" [Our Native Land]) to the Swedish-language "Sandels," in which a general, seemingly a coward, leads his men to victory through patience and odd timing, to the glories of the Earth ("Maan virsi"), to tales of characters from Finnish folklore. Most are for male choir, a couple are for mixed choir, and all are acompanied by large orchestra. Sibelius's ablity to tell a story is remarkable (it makes one wish he'd been more interested in opera), and desite the similarity in the forces used, the effects here are varied, from rousing to elegaic, to simply entertaining. These performances are superb, and Paavo Järvi's leadership is urgent. The sonics are glorious. This is a must-have for those who love Sibelius and it will surprise newcomers with its fervor, energy and beauty. --Robert Levine

Outstanding.......2006-01-08

A wonderful CD. Most of the works on this disc are not very well-known, but they should be - especially "Snofrid". Great singing and excellent sonics. A must for Sibelius fans and, I'm sure, a pleasant surprise for anyone looking for something different. Very highly recommended.

great nationalistic choral pieces.......2003-09-27

These cantatas from Sibelius are highly enjoyable, and full of lush national flavour. Snofrid is the highlight. great performances and recording.

hard to find..but worth the time.......2007-06-09

Great album. Was recorded back in 1990 but sounds great regardless. Very relaxing and a high prize in my opera collection. One complaint I've had about some operas is that it focuses too much on the vocals and not so much the orchestra.. this album fully executes in both. Do not buy this album off amazon. I just got it off Itunes for half the price. If it says "cannot be puchased in the US store" just try again. I somehow got it.. anyway.. definitely worth your money.. just remember Itunes in your shopping adventures.

Fabulous Sibelius Choral Music!.......2000-05-08

I believe that "Our Native Land" (called "Homeland" on this CD) was first recorded about 15 years ago. I had it on LP, and was crazy about it the first time I heard it, and I have never tired of it. I am so glad to now have it on CD. If you love Sibelius' works, you will love this...moody, melodic, beautiful choral music.
