Berl Senofsky never had the international career expected after winning a prestigious competition in 1955, and the few records he made are long out of print. But these concert recordings between 1941 and 1992 reveal a master violinist who can stand comparison with the best, his blend of technical virtuosity and emotional power heard throughout these varied items. He transforms the slight Paradis Sicilienne, the Gluck Orfeo transcription, and the Godowsky waltz into candied gems. The Paganini Caprices are dazzling, the Vivaldi goes far beyond mere baroque doodling, and the Schubert sonatina flows like melted gold. The sound is fine in the more recent items, better than expected in the older ones. An important disc, enabling us to rediscover the art of a great violinist. --Dan Davis
