Brilliant Berlioz, But..........2003-09-16

Take this performance of Berlioz's "Symphonie Fantastique" and "Le Carnival Romain" Overture for example. These are brilliant golden-age stereo performances from the late 1950s by Rudolf Kempe and Berlin Philharmonic (and the Vienna Philharmonic for the Overture) to be sure. But they have been available on CD before as half of a two-disc EMI Seraphim Set (that also contained Fremaux's performance of Saint-Saens' "Organ" Symphony) which was available for one-third the cost! In all, Testament is great label and I'd like them to continue making rare recordings available. Yet if they keep reprinting deleted CDs, instead of rescuing obscure gems from the vaults to make available on CD for the first time, then I'm not sure how much longer they will be around for our listening enjoyment.
