Michael Hedges, without exaggeration, was the most brilliant solo acoustic guitarist who ever walked this Earth. This CD is not only a great starting point for those who are not familiar with his work, but it is essential listening for anyone with general interest in the field of solo instrumental acoustic guitar.
During his lifetime, Hedges was acknowledged as the "king of the hill" among an elite handful of guitar virtuosi. Years after his untimely death, the music of this artist still towers above the pack.
Also highly recommended: Areial Boundaries, Oracle, and Taproot.

Every now and then an album comes along that seems to stand outside the constraints of time. This is one of those albums. Beautiful and unlike anything you've ever heard before, this is one of those albums that makes you truly grateful that God gave you ears.
CAPTIVATING.......2004-10-25
I am a late bloomer, in regards to Hedges' music, but I can't express how much I like his songs. The first time I even heard about him was on the LAGQ Cd "Guitar Heroes" where they play a piece for him called "Lament and Wake".Then I bought the CD "Beyond Boundaries" and saw why they included him on their CD. What a great loss to lose such a talented musician.
This CD is a great introduction to the amazing world of Michael Hedges.

Surprising Talent.......2001-12-07
I've never heard about this artist until a few days ago when i got this CD as a present a few days ago.
This CD is very exceptional, but it feels a little bit too perfect. Her sound is beautiful, but there's no excitement.
Her Meditation sound boring sometimes, but her tone is gorgeous through out the album.
Her voice on the last track is pretty amazing for a violinist, and this album is pretty rare and outrageous in good ways.
Great Violin Player Create Great Album.......2001-08-07
Min has performed as great violinist. She proves her technique and her musical talent. And she proves she can play wide range of music from classicals to jazz. I like her especially in these tracks Thais:Meditation and Piazzolla's "Final." Not like her name, she gives Max sound to hear.

"Many Places" Pushes Boundaries of Musical Form
Guitarist and composer Tim Volpicella has released "Many Places," his second solo CD on the Open Path label. The new CD pushes the boundaries of musical possibility, with 14 original tracks that deftly pull together elements from a wide spectrum of music. The CD offers a sophisticated combination of jazz, blues, Middle Eastern and other world music components, resulting in a gratifying program of dynamic tension and release.
"Many Places" is a testament to Tim's abilities as an arranger and producer. While Tim's electric and nylon-stringed guitar occupies a prominent place on the CD, it shares the spotlight as needed in the service of each song. The CD opens with haunting piano by Russell Ferrante of The Yellow Jackets, who surfaces throughout. The human voice takes a central role on track two, as Giuseppe "Peppe" Merolla trades leads with Tim's guitar as a fully realized, non-verbal vocal instrument. Russian singer Irena Mikhailova creates an Eastern European feeling with her expressive, other-worldly chanting on track four. Tracks five and 14 feature the luxurious, bluesy sound of a Hammond B3 organ, played by Bob Adams. Tracks two, six and ten feature Renata Bratt's deft cello playing, and saxophonists Dann Zinn, Kristen Strom and Hafez Modirzadeh meet various pieces of sampled world music to create a rich, multi-textured melange on track 12. Zinn is also featured on tracks four and 14, and helps create a Middle Eastern sound on track 11.
Additional performers include bassists Stan Poplin and John Shifflett, drummers Peppe Merolla, Jason Lewis and Wally Schnalle, Katrina Wreede on viola, and Darin Neasham on synth. Merolla also assumes trumpet and Flugel horn duties.

Stunning originality & musicianship.......2003-07-24
how does it happen that i stumble across one of my favorite albums by accident? i mean, billions are spent on...oh, never mind. happily, i picked up Tim Volpicella's second album and upon inital recovery went out and got some more as presents for the most deserving of my friends & family. and a couple relative strangers. and then i got the first album. ~mirabile dictu~ this is the most inspiring and evocative collection of music i've heard in years.
a year later i was pleased and privileged to attend a concert performance of much of the material contained herein. it's now at the top of my list of live performances in more than 35 years of attention. syncretic, synergistic melding of forms and styles ranging through all of contempory music based in America and ranging across continents, cultures, and mindscapes.
fourteen original compositions supported by a group of exemplary instrumentalists in arrangements that combine a traditional rhythm section (guitar, bass, drums, keys) with imaginative combinations of horns, strings, and vocal chanting. compelling from start to finish, as with any great work "Many Places" yields fresh rewards with each subsequent listening.

Having won the U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Championship on more than one occasion, this classically trained fiddler blends original compositions with traditional tunes. It's easy on the ears but pulls on your heart strings.
