Bizet: Carmen / Maazel (1984 film) [highlights]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This set of excerpts from Bizet's perennial favorite comes from the soundtrack of what is probably the finest film of an opera ever made, the production by Francesco Rosi. Julia Migenes is a soprano Carmen, not the usual mezzo, but her lustiness and vivid word-painting put her in the top rank of Carmens even if she lacks the correct vocal weight for the part. Domingo's Don José is by now familiar, but this is probably the best of the three times he's recorded the role; indeed, his final act desperation is something to behold. Faith Esham is dreary as Micaela, but Ruggero Raimondi sings a dangerously appealing Escamillo. Lorin Maazel does some very odd, unexpected things with tempi (they didn't seem so odd in the film--maybe you had to have been there), but he still holds the opera together (as well as one can with highlights, that is). All told, this is exciting--and recommended. --Robert Levine

The End of the Big Voice?.......2007-04-16
This CD, which is truly fine overall, reminds me of Marilyn Horne's lament that we have probably seen the end of the big voice and it makes me sad. I agree with the reviewer who refers to "microphonies". And more justice could be done to Bjorling's voice with a better transfer. But at some point, music becomes a matter of taste and I prefers singers who have the instrument and the support and the training, whether formal or not, to just let fly and take a chance on making a mistake. Domingo can be wonderful and so can his musicianship but he tends to be so stiff. I have to wonder at the virulence and asperity with which some people go after Pavarotti. It's true that late in his career he made some questionable recordings but the answer to that is simple: don't buy them. At his best, he belongs for all time in the top echelon of tenors. I love this CD and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys great (big) voices.
Fla Gator Lady.......2007-01-12
Highly recommend this CD with these beloved arias of the greatest tenors in opera. I have owned this CD for a couple of years and purchased another for a friend who always requests that I play it ... perfect for listening in the car, dinner, bridge games, relaxation ... just so perfect. You won't be disappointed in this one.
20 Great Tenor Arias.......2007-01-09
A great disc, combination of the greatest tenors of the 20th century and some of the most beautiful music ever written in any century,a must addition to any opera lovers collection.
Plesantly surprised..........2006-01-14
I don't remember how I found this CD the other day surfing through the "Amazon" such as it is, but I did. I listened to a few clips provided & on the strength of that, I purchased this CD.
First it is a great buy. A booklet with pictures of each tenor, a small bio, the year recorded and TRANSLATIONS of each aria are provided. This is really nice. It seems more & more that translations are being left out. Being a former opera singer, I may know most of the words, but sometimes it's just nice to read along (sometimes it's just nice to listen too).
Being on the Decca label, there is admittedly quite a few Pavarotti selections. Out of 20 selections, he has 6 of them. But I love Pavarotti, so this is no problem for me. These are all early recordings & his voice is magnificent! Being a singer, I still marvel at his ability to sing "All'armi!" on a high D and still say the 2nd syllable "mi" on such a note! WOW. There is also of course his very sweet, impassioned and lyrical turn as Rodolfo in "La Boheme" as well as the lesser known (although I still have it on casette) "La Favorita" which has a particularly high tessitura.
Also featured are a young Plácido Domingo singing a VERY nice "Flower song/ La fleur que tu m'avais jetée" from Carmen. He usually sounds too pushed for me on the top notes (as one might expect from a Pavarotti fan, I like free top notes) but in this recording he is pretty darn fabulous. He also sings an aria from "Tales of Hoffman/Les Contes d'Hoffman" and I have always felt that he, like Neil Schicoff, were well suited to this role.
Lamentably there are only one selection each from Carreras, Correlli, Monaco, Aragall & Kollo. Especial kudos to the young recording they feature for Aragall. He had a very free and nice high tenor well suited to Verdi. Of course as his career went forward with the natural darkening of his voice and the "heavier" roles, he did start to develop a wobble. But this recording is before that. His top, his phrasing are all beautifully done in his featured aria from "La Traviata."
Mario del Monaco's "E lucevan le stelle" is hauntingly beautiful and has such a wonderful pianissimo in it that it makes you just want to gasp for beauty's sake. I now know every tenor I've heard sing this aria was trying to emulate what he did.
This is a great CD because it does bring together on one CD some of the greatest singers of the 20th/21st century. Bergonzi, di Stefano, Björling, in addition to the previously mentioned artists is quite an impressive collection. I'm sure there's only one of each for Carreras, Aragall (I believe they are formerly EMI/Angel artists) and perhaps some of the others because they are "imported" from another label. There's so much Pavarotti on this CD because he IS a Decca artist.
A highly recommended CD, affordable, not the usually obscure and unpolished artists that are sometimes found on compilations. Plus acutal linear notes and translations. Nicely done, Decca!!!
Absolutely Agree About Corelli.......2005-05-27
Franco Corelli's "Nessun Dorma" is still the best of them all - clear, passionate, and exciting. (And those final two notes...! Gives me chills just to think of it.) I was fortunate enough to see him live in both "Turandot" and "Romeo and Juliet" a year before his retirement, and he was still a Calaf and a Romeo to die for... as, of course, Liu and Juliet did! As it is, I tend to buy compilations depending on how much Corelli they include - though Bjorling is a strong second, and I have happy memories of Domingo. Long live the Golden Age of Operatic Tenors!

this is a wonderful cd. i have it in my car and listen to it all the time. you wont go wrong buying this cd if you love the operah and great voices.
If you are unsure about opera, this is where to begin.......2004-06-22
Many people are turned off of opera because of the nature of the beast - unknown tongue, the continual singing and particularly the sopranos whose voices are as piercing as they are diffdicult to understand. These selections are ravishing in their beauty. It has been estimated that 2/3 of all classical effort was put into opera. Thus it is not surprising that some of the best music ever penned can be found here, particularly those that deal with that most human of emotion - love.
The orchestration is wonderful, the voices emotional and quite sincere, the authenticity is present. It is difficult to surpass Verdi or Puccini in plumbing the emotional depths. All in all a good experience.
The Perfect Opera CD.......2002-08-08
I'm so in love with this CD, I'm giving it to as many ppl as I can. It's a great introduction to opera for ppl who don't listen to it very often. It has all the great hits with all the great singers, who can make shivers go down your spine. My friends who don't know opera as much as I do love it too.
Romantic.......2000-05-12
If you have just got to be interested in Opera, this is a good start. You can listen to the best pieces of the most famous (an romantic) Operas performed by the best singers. If you are a long-time Opera lover, this CD will remind you of all the performances that you went with your loved one and romantic moments after the concerts.

Customer Reviews:
Great compilation but the title's a misnomer........2006-07-14
I agree that this--and Essential Opera 2--is a very good collection for opera lovers and opera beginners alike, but am afraid I can't agree that this is "essential" opera. Where is Maria Callas in the line-up? Absent Maria, any opera collection that deems itself "essential" deludes itself. Callas is as indispensable to opera as, say, Picasso is to cubism.
The misnomer is made the more stark and jarring when one sees that a contemporaneous rival, Renata Tebaldi, is given two tracks to sing and the Divina Absoluta, none. Tebaldi was Callas' rival like Clementi was Mozart's--whoever remembers the rivals now? History has judged well who the masters are. So I listen to arias in this CD--arias that Callas have incomparably performed like Tosca's Vissi d'Arte, La Wallys's Ebben Ne'andro Lontana"--to disappointment.
I'd give this disc five stars if not for Callas' omission, a fatal mistake for an opera collection that aspires to be "essential."
A great introduction to opera!.......1998-12-19
This CD is full of the most accessible works from the world of opera by some of the greatest performers. Several of the selections have been used in popular media(commercials, movies etc.)so they may be familiar. The liner notes give full details of the operas from which the pieces are selected. I find this an excellent gift for my opera-phobic friends and for children. The performances are top notch and the arrangement of pieces on the CD is well thought out.

Bravissima!.......2007-02-07
Oh, please don't make me tell you about this CD. Just buy it!!! A must own for the Anna Moffo and Carmen fan!
Moffo and Corelli - a match made in opera heaven!.......2007-02-07
You can really never beat the incredible duo of Anna Moffo and Franco Corelli singing the title roles. I'm biased to both - Moffo is my favorite soprano with her creamy voice and dramatic ability. Corelli, for his sheer animal magnetism and intensity of performance. I've never been a fan of Bizet's "Carmen". For some reason, I just never liked operas sung in French. And I took French in school and enjoyed it. Somehow, operas just sound more beautiful and melodic in Italian. Anyways, the music is lovely as Bizet did have a way with melody. The leads truly make this a memorable performance as they did not sing together much at all during their respective careers. I wish they did.
Corelli sounds like a jealous man and possessed too! Moffo is her usual gorgeous self - the warm and seductive voice with it's elegant phrasing.
Not your only Carmen but an interesting detour.......2006-07-01
While this is not an entry that many reviewers are fond of, it still gives pleasurable listening. It was the first recording to restore the music Bizet cut before the premiere. The sound is gorgeous. What about the leads? Anna Moffo possesed a velvet
voice (and was a beautiful woman to boot). While she indulges in some crooning and scooping, she still offers an attractive sound and an interesting interpretation of Carmen. Franco Corelli has an animal energy -- even beyond what he did in his recording for Karajan (with Leontyne Price). Listen to him at the end of the 3rd act or any of act 4. He sounds truly possesed with jealousy. Helen Donath, who I was lucky enough to work with at LA Opera, never made a bad recording. Everything about her performance sounds fresh and spontaneous and perfectly pitched. Piero Capucilli's Escamillo seems a bit heavy, but is still fine. Dialogue has been trimed down to just a few lines between set pieces, probably since no one in the cast was a native French speaker. Maazel conducts with lots of personality, passion and individuality. Yes, he pulls the tempo around, so this is unmistakenly HIS view of "Carmen." In short, this is not a typically Gallic view of "Carmen" but still offers lots of pleasure. Give it a try if you like the idea of a different approach to this classic.

Customer Reviews:
Not excellent, but nice listening.......2005-01-13
This isn't the greatest of Domingo's albums that I own, but its provides for some good easy listening.
Some of the bigger arias like Nessun Dorma and Elucevan le stelle are slightly breathy, I think perhaps these recording were made when the tenor was slightly older than the recodring I'm used to. However the redition of Granada(slightly tacky but fun nonetheless) and the couple other spanish operetta or zarzuela type songs are very pleasant.
This was a decent buy.

Customer Reviews:
Definative Carmen.......1999-07-25
This is the one we have all been waiting for.In my opinion this has the perfect cast, conducter and orchestra. What can one say about Domingos Jose.It seems as if the part was written for him.I don't think there has been a finer exponent of the part.Ever. Bravo!(This is no exception to Domingos other recordings by the way)Raimondis Toreador is magnificent. He has a glorious bass voice and can also put across the characters arrogance perfectly I believe he is one of the greatest basses of his generation.Migenes Carmen is also wonderful, sexy and passionate.A1. Lorin Mazzels conducting is outstanding, perfect tempos all the time.Bravo! This is a must for all fans of this magnificent opera.Get it!!!

Customer Reviews:
Probably the best all-round recording.......2006-09-17
I sympathise with those who want their Carmen quintessentially French, more in the Opera Comique tradition, with lighter voices, perfect accents and generally more Parisian than Viennese, but this recording provides such a complete dramatic experience that for me, it leaves all the others - and there are an awful lot of them! - in the dust. The only other recording I enjoy as much is even more unauthentic: the beautifully sung, hugely dramatic Karajan reading with Corelli (French worse than Domingo's and without the excuse of at least sounding a bit Spanish), Price (smokey, alluring but very grand) and Merrill (vocalising marvellously without bothering much about characterisation details). You don't have to have seen the film to appreciate this Maazel account but it happens to be one of the very best visual realisations of any opera. Migenes Johnson re-trained her voice to acquire plenty of gutsy chest register without losing the delicacy of her top and she delivers that famous music with some lovely portamenti - not at all vulgar, in my opinion, just properly in character. When all is said and done, Carmen IS a bit of a slut - but a brave and likeable one! I get fed up with already outdated interpretative wisdom that she is, underneath it all something of a lady and should be sung with Gallic understatement; for me, Berganza simply underplays the role while Migenes Johnson gets it right. Domingo sings his best Jose on record; powerful, with a rapid vibrato and some easy, plangent top notes. The surprise for me was Raimondi's Escamillo; I agree with another reviewer that it is the best on disc and the voice sounds truly baritonal - which perhaps explains why I have sometimes found his timbre too light for some of the true bass roles he has undertaken. Maazel's direction is masterly; all the tempi are beautifully judged and the authentic French orchestra, chorus and secondary roles are a delight to the ears. My only slight disappointment is encountered in Esham's Micaela; she sings neatly and expressively but the fundamental tone is thin; I miss the beauty of Te Kanawa's sound in this role. Still, that doesn't really spoil the set; you won't find a better.
OK sound quality; great performances and film.......2003-11-08
It's strange that reviews on Amazon written so far on this recording seem to have focused on the film production rather than the CD set. Although this is a sound track of the Francesco Rossi film adaptation of Carmen, it is marketed(and rightly so) as an opera recording.
First on the individual singer: they are all good, but I think Raimondi {Escamillo} and Domingo {Don Jose} stand out. Both perform superbly (and this is assuming you're just listening without seeing the movie). Faith Esham's Michaela is great. Her voice is full and smooth and fits Bizet's lyrical style very well. I like Migenes-Johnson's Carmen. She sings well, with a good amount of sultry, capricious aura.
If you just listen to the CD's without having watched the film, you might have gotten a different feeling about Don Jose. Domingo's portrayal of Don Jose (perhaps partly due to his imposing physical presence) in the film is more confident than what his singing may suggest. Don Jose should be a more tentative character. {OK that's all I'll say about the film.)
Now about the sound quality. There is more background noise than other recordings. I guess this is becasue it is a sound track after all, so a lot of stage sound is not filtered out. The sound is also not too "loud," so I typically have to turn up the volumn, and end up hearing quite a bit of noise.
Recommended even just for the performances alone.
Perfect! Glorious!!!!!.......2002-03-17
This recording&the video turned me into an operanut.... I LOVE it and cannot stop to listen to it as often as possible. By now I own 35 recordings of Carmen with the likes of Ponselle, Simionato, Callas, Cossotto, de los Angeles, Callas, Crespin, Resnik, Moffo, Bumbry, Baltsa, Troyanos, Larmore, Verrett, Fassbänder.... Only Baltsa (whom I heard live as Carmen) came close to Migenes. I prefer Carreras' Don José because he is more passionate, more fatal, more self-destructive.....but Placido is amazing too. Raimondi is the ONLY Escamillo whom I really like in the role... All the others merely "act" Escamillo but he IS Escamillo. Esham is a pretty, fragile Micaela, very lovely.
I LOVE IT, I LOVE IT, I LOVE IT!
Superb recording of the world's most popular opera.......2001-10-27
Rosi's film (for which this is the soundtrack) is visually so powerful that the music could have been sacrificed. But it certainly wasn't! This performance is so perfect that, having now got to know it, I find it almost impossible to listen to any other.
As for Julia Migenes (Migenes-Johnson when this recording was made), what words could be sufficiently superlative? Even her acting in the film does not match her exquisite singing in this recording, upstaging even Domingo. The dramatic impact of the final scene is simply overwhelming.
Stay away from this recording........1999-12-24
Sure, Francesco Rossi film was beautiful, but from a musical point of view Julia Migenes is just dreadful, vulgar and not French at all. Rather go for Berganza (DG) or De los Angeles (EMI).

Customer Reviews:
equal to volume I.......2000-12-08
This C.D. like Volume I before it is a very high quality, wonderfully diverse album. The pair compliment eachother beautifully, and stand alone strong. I would recomend it to anyone who already loves Opera, and to any new innitiate. I bought Vol. I and Vol. II on a whim and have not been sorry. The piece by Wagner at the end is worth the purchase price alone for this one.
