Bohuslav Martinu: Piano Concertos Nos. 2, 3 & 4

Editorial Reviews

This wonderful disc is another souvenir of the great Czech pianist Rudolf Firkusny's return to his homeland after the triumph of democracy in the early 1990s. We are very lucky that he lived to make this recording. Firkusny was a personal friend of the composer, and he gave the premieres of all three of these concertos. He plays them with a sovereign mastery that brooks no competition, and the music itself is marvelous. The Fourth Concerto, subtitled Incantations, is one of the century's most exciting and unusual scores for piano and orchestra, while the other two explore both the classical and Romantic heritage of the form. This is a recording that has "greatness" stamped all over it. You must hear it. --David Hurwitz

The First Cello Concerto was rewritten several times on the way to its final incarnation, and it's a major addition to the small but distinguished body of great music for cello and orchestra. The Second Concerto needs more persuasive advocacy. It's a big, Romantic work that can seem to hang fire unless given the right dose of urgency. I don't think that these performers quite manage to bring it off, but you still get a good sense of the music's potential. Besides, the spiky Concertino is an attractive bonus, one of the many neoclassical confections that Martinu produced with unflagging expertise throughout his entire life. --David Hurwitz

I can really only echo Amazon's intrepid reviewer on this Firkusny recording of Martinu's Piano Cto's. # 2,3 & 4. The pieces are great in themselves, which fascinatingly chronicle 3 decades of the composer's development, one concerto each from the 30's, 40's and 50's, as he grows progressively more inventive. Firkusny is a great pianist who did the world premiers of all of the concertos and had the 4th dedicated to him. Pesek handles the scores with skill and dash. The recording job is excellent. There! I'm out.
