Two factors account for the broad-based popularity of Secret Garden (the duo of Norwegian keyboardist Rolf Lovland and Irish violinist Fionnuala Sherry). One: the twosome's attractive, smartly conceived mix of compatible elements including light classical, urbane New Age, and well-mannered contemporary Celtic. Two: the pair's ability to persuasively present this formula with poise and (crucially) fetching good looks in a concert film, which in 1999 enjoyed broad exposure on American public television. (The performance, A Night with Secret Garden, is available on DVD.) White Stones is Lovland and Sherry's second collaboration, and, despite a few side trips into weighty sentimentality (e.g., the heart-clutching earnestness of "First Day of Spring"), it nicely conveys the pair's simple yet endearing children-of-the-cosmos spirit. Highlights here include the disc's energized, Celtic-influenced tunes ("Steps," "Moving," "Escape") and an infectious, regal charmer ("Celebration") Lovland composed in honor of the Queen of Norway's 60th birthday. Accompanied on nearly every piece by a small orchestra or Celtic instrumentalists, Sherry's violin sometimes evokes moods of melancholy that seem better suited for a two-hanky, movie-of-the-week film score. Yet a piece such as "Hymn to Hope" shows she can also elegantly trigger deeper feelings of longing and anticipation that can linger for hours. Overall, a worthwhile listen. --Terry Wood

Pleasant, romantic music for the soul.......2007-06-27
As a fan of "Secret Garden" I have enjoyed this CD for weeks now. I fall asleep to it almost every night. It is not my very favorite, prefering the turn of the century one, but I do alternate listening to both. I am looking forward to a new album, as the recently purchsed one has mostly repeats on it.
Talented musicians, composers and singers make this CD incredibly enjoyable and I do say I love it.
Excellent Work.......2007-04-15
This is by far my favorite Secret Garden CD and their only all instumental CD. I prefer the allegro selections , despite the fact that they consider them to be filler material . The musicianship is first rate and you would never know that the individual songs were recorded in pieces , unless you visited their website . This CD has , what the Grateful Dead refered to as , the X factor . Everything on each selection flows together as if all of the musicians were in the same studio doing it live . Fionnuala Sherry dominates the entire work as the featured artist , but certainly doesn't overpower the rest of the fine musicians involved . I find it remarkable that this CD has never received a major award .
Classic, beautiful music by Secret Garden - INCREDIBLE.......2006-07-10
Secret Garden is the best discovery of my life as far as music goes. The violin is so soft and beautiful, and the singing is ethereal. I cannot get enough of this group! I highly recommend White Stones. I love Irish music and they have a lot of songs that have the Irish Celtic sound, and I just cannot say enough good things about this CD.
White Stones.......2005-09-26
Excellent orchestrations, with use of specific instruments to bring out various emotions in the listener. Excellent up front or as background music, or even for meditation. I like driving in the mountains or desert listening to any of Secret Garden's great music.

Enchanting.......2004-09-25
Secret Garden's "Whitestones", is an amazing CD. The talent of Rolf Lovland and Fionnula Sherry is unprecedented...their styles compliment each other perfectly. "Whitestones" is a beautiful compilation of instrumentals, highlighting Rolf's songwriting and piano ability as well as Fionnula's amazing and haunting violin melodies. The songs on "Whitestones" are perfect to listen to after a long and stressful day, in the bath, and they are perfect to listen to while falling asleep as the songs are very ethereal and dreamlike. I have been listening to this disc for about six years and it is still in my main CD rotation, in fact I used the song "Hymn" at my wedding as I walked down the isle. This CD is a must to own for those who appreciate New Age and Celtic music. Their other albums are also amazing, and I am proud to say that I own every one of their releases and I am looking forward to their next release which will be out soon!

Paradiso.......2007-07-05
Let me just say- a masterpiece. Specially the Requiem part of the album I liked a lot: Jenkins' harmonies, novelty of interpretation, and combination of styles. Integration of best elements of classical Requiem and modern composition.
A further expansion of a talented composer.......2007-02-01
I guess you could call me a "number one" fan of Karl Jenkins music. I find his music uplifting and soul-stirring. After a few listenings to Requiem, I quickly found so much to enjoy out of the variety of tracks.
For consumers that are only aware of Diamond Music, Jenkins has composed a whole collection of works, five to be exact, that are under the Adiemus title. You must, I repeat, must expand your collection to include some if not all of these titles, particularly Adiemus I, II & IV. These are such emotionally charged works, fashioned with a chorus of female singers and soloists and full orchestra. Do a quick search and you'll learn more about this themed works. But I digress....
Requiem is unique in that the composer uses a full chorus including male voices and a baritone soloist in the short work, "In These Stones..." This is the first time I'm aware that Jenkins embraces the SATB structure. What an exceptional inclusion to his body of works! I've picked out a few favorites including Introit, Dies Irae, and In Paradisum. However, Pie Jesu shines as a gorgeous heart felt work that effortlessly soars between child soloist, soprano soloist and chorus. Guaranteed to bring tears to your eyes. Finally, the short work that closes this CD, "In These Stones Horizons Sing", calls to mind Ralph Vaughn Williams and a touch of Glass. As a singer in many choruses, I found myself itching to bring this short piece to the attention of various choral directors. It conveys such a powerful quality, visions of Celtic settings arise in my mind. If you are a choral singer, I assure you, you will find something to inspire you. Enjoy Requiem and look into Jenkins other works as well. You won't be sorry.
Karl Jenkins: Requiem - an eclectic requiem for the 21st Centuray.......2007-01-11
Incorporating elements of World Music (Japanese Haiku), and hints of Arvo Part, Philip Glass and Chill-out Pop, this Requiem Mass for vocal soloists, large choir and full orchestra is a moving, dazzeling masterpiece.
My only reservation about this recording is that, despite being conducted by the composer, the choir and orchestera lack the rythmic intensity and fresh enthusiasm I have heard in a live performance. (Victoria Philharmonic Choral Society)
Great to me.......2007-01-09
I was driving in the country on a beautiful day and heard this CD on a local NPR station. In fact, everyone in our vehicle enjoyed the music very much.I then(upon it's completion) heard this CD reviewed where it was ripped by an NPR panel of music critics. I would recommend it for anyone who isn't a fan of the atonal or complicated music NPR reviewers seem to love. But then what do I know.
Karl Jenkins: Requiem.......2006-11-10
This entire CD is absolutely amazing. The recording is excellent quality and the music definitely reflects Karl Jenkins' unique style. The musicians performing this music are very talented. This CD came with a booklet with the lyrics in it that I could follow and it had English translations. The unique part of this particular requiem was Jenkins' ability to write lyrics in numerous languages including Latin, Japanese (true Haiku!), and Welsh (Jenkins' native language).
I initially got hooked to Jenkins' music when I obtained 'The Essential Collection' with diamond music on 'DeBeers' TV commercials. The music on this CD is definitely deeper in style. He wrote this music from his heart. I have listened to the Requiem many times.

The Great Masters are not all dead.......2005-01-06
Bill Douglas is one of the most creative, talented, and multi-faceted composers of our time. Listening to greats such as Flow Gently, Sweet Avlon and the Autumn Song are almost spiritual experiences. His music is innovative. Note the extraordinary sound produced when he involves both piano and flute in playing the melody. It is remarkable in that I would never have expected it to work and produce such a moving effect. The subtle rythm sounds are lost on first hearing, leaving much to be discovered in listening again and again. Some of his solo piano work is his most melodic and memorable and I look forward to this new CD with great enthusiasm!
To know Bill Douglas.......2004-08-22
If you want beauty at it's utmost, then you have found it with Stepping Stones. An acoustic version of some his finest work is simply as beautiful as his ensemble work. Being fortunate enough to experience his music by playing it makes it all the more worthwhile. You will not be dissapointed. Sit back and let his music take you into the world of melodic mastery, he is THE BEST.

Classic[al] Stones.......2007-07-10
As both a huge Rolling Stones fan and a lover of classical music, I have to say this is one of the most enjoyable and interesting discs I own. Here are 11 of the Stones' best songs, as you have never heard them before. This cd is certainly a tribute to the melodic and lyrical genius of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and crew, but the impeccable London Symphony Orchestra and guest vocalists transform these catchy rock tunes into incredibly haunting and powerful musical sagas. The versions of "Ruby Tuesday" and "As Tears Go By" are really amazing and even tragic. "Sympathy for the Devil" has an operatic feel to it. The child-like innocence of "Dandelion" is really quite entertaining. Considering the Stones were really a blues band at heart, one wouldn't think initially that their repertoire would translate well into a symphonic format. But it does. There is only one way to enjoy this rare musical treat-buy this cd now!
Best CD I own........2003-11-04
I've had this CD for what seems like a lifetime now, and I still can't put it away. By far the most timeless CD I own.
Classical classics.......2002-11-12
The lively levi clad rebel music of the Stones is traded in for high brow tuxedo's and an orchestral sound with mixed results. Through the years I've played this disc for a different rendering of the familiar rock anthems. As stated by another reviewer you must not compare because one is rock and one is a classical treatment of a rock song. The problem is that it is hard to seperate comparisons. Beginning with "Street Fighting Man" the Stones anthem that was banned because of the resulting violence it incited, the disc is a subdued and barely recognized shell of the original Richards and Jagger penned number. The translations work at times like the interesting versions of "Paint It Black"and the hauntingly beautifully dark "Symphony For the Devil" that sounds like a theme from play. For the most part the pure musical numbers are better than the others where vocals exist becuse of the inevitable vioce comparisons. An exception might be Marianne Fathfull's rendering of "Ruby Tuesday." Mick Jagger is featured on one song, "Angie," for a slightly different vocal interpretation that is slower and more dramatic. The London Symphony Orchestra produces a lush backdrop for the familiar songs associated with guitar and rock and roll. Taken alone it is a nice sampling of the Stones music but it is very hard to not make comparisons. They are two different genres and should be treated as such. Nonetheless I prefer the original versions but find these songs to be more soothing and sophisticated. As alternatives to the originals it sounds good but not great.
Excellent choice.......2002-08-27
If you enjoy Classical versions of rock music, this is one that you must get. I love it. They have excellent version of the songs. This album is THE album that turned me on with Classical version of Rock music.
Forget the original Stones stuff--just enjoy for itself.......1999-07-23
Interesting form of Stones music--definitely not for the Stones purist, but not bad if just taken as music to enjoy by itself.

'Music too, keeps building anew..........2004-08-02
...with the insecurest stones her celestial house in unusable space.' That quotation from Rainer Maria Rilke, which leads off the notes in the booklet accompanying this CD, is about as apt as it could be regarding the wonderful work that Stephan Micus has generated over the course of his career. Celestial and at the same time inseparable from every single aspect and attribute of this earth on which we stand, live and breathe, Micus's music dares to attempt to embrace and unite it all. I have every recording he's ever made (how I wish his first LP would be made available on CD!) -- and I have no hesitation in giving every single one of them a 'five'. That might perhaps seem excessive to some -- but those who have been touched deeply by his music will understand.
A reviewer on another website states that THE MUSIC OF STONES 'doesn't work', that it doesn't hold a candle to his other releases -- I repsectfully disagree. As one of the other reviewers here so astutely pointed out, the subtleties, the variety of sounds produced using the stone instruments featured in this recording is astonishing. Someone unfamiliar with Micus might indeed think synthesizers were at play from time to time, but he has never used any electronics in any of his recordings -- everything is completely acoustic.
A world traveller from an early age (I think I read that he first travelled to the Orient at 16), Stephan Micus has thankfully kept his mind, heart and soul open to the spirits and musics of other cultures. And, again, thankfully, he has passed along what he has absorbed, the sounds that have resonated within him, to his listeners, that they might be touched by it as well.
This recording stands out from the rest of his catalogue in a couple of notable ways. First of all, it's the only release on which anyone besides Micus performs. Secondly, there are no overdubs -- which he usually employs seamlessly, with great skill. The music here was recorded as performed by Stephan, his wife Nobuko, the sculptor Elmar Daucher (who created the unique instruments employed here) and Gunther Federer. Aside from the resonating stone sculptures, Micus himself adds some instruments more familiar to his listeners: shakuhachi, tin whistle, stone chimes (also made by Daucher), as well as his unique and beautiful 'not in any known language' vocals.
The overall effect is breathtakingly beautiful. Recorded in the historic Ulm Cathedral, which has a natural echo of 8 seconds, the acoustics of the space itself lend their indelible touch to the performance. Surprisingly (at least to some listeners) the sounds here are not discordant and cold, but rather melodic and full of life -- the life that courses through us as well as the earth and its components. It's a great audio illustration of the interconnectedness of the universe.
I have my favorites among Stephan Micus's catalogue -- TO THE EVENING CHILD, DESERT POEMS, IMPLOSIONS, OCEAN, KOAN, BEHIND ELEVEN DESERTS, TILL THE END OF TIME, TWILIGHT FIELDS, EAST OF THE NIGHT, GARDEN OF MIRRORS, WINGS OVER WATER, LISTEN TO THE RAIN, TOWARDS THE WIND, DARKNESS AND LIGHT, ATHOS, ARCHAIC CONCERTS (the hard-to-find first LP)...and of course THE MUSIC OF STONES. Hey, what do you know? That's everything he's done.
Seriously -- each recording has its own personality and mood, but they're all supremely beautiful and moving. I really don't think you could go wrong with any of them, if you can appreciate what he's doing even a bit. His music holds a special place in my collection -- and in my heart and soul. Every time I see that he's issued a new recording, it's cause for celebration. I can't recommend his music highly enough.
More first-rate Micus.......2000-08-31
I just rated this Micus album a '4,' not because I disagree with the other reviewer, but because I feel funny giving all of Micus's albums '5s'. This one is actually probably Micus's best known "early" album, both for the reasons the other reviewer states and because the instrumentation here is so unusual (even considering that Micus is one of most explorative artists alive with respect to the instruments he chooses to perform on). This is a *real* good album to listen to lieing down on a waterbed, with headphones on. It was recorded during the wee hours in a European cathedral, and the effect is hauntingly mesmerizing. Other best Micus albums: "Darkness and Light," "Ocean," and "To the Evening Child."
amazing.......1999-03-04
There IS something that seems strange about someone playing stone sculptures in a German Cathedral - it seems like it should be avant-guard noise. But it is profoundly calming. The stones are stroked and resonate reverberations or are struck and produce muted tones. It took me a moment to realize that the humming on the first track was stone and not some synthesizer. While a sophomoric observation, the liner notes show slow time photos of the stones being played, and, not surprisingly, they are in sharp time focus with the player slow time blurred, suggesting, of course, the permanence of stone and the fleeting temporal qualities of our lives. The stones are accompanied by other instruments that people familiar with Micus know; the reeds and flutes that float the soul.

Precursor of "Muzak".......2006-03-11
Erik Satie cultivated his fame as an obscure pianist within the smokey cabernet-cafes high on the hill of Montmartre - a trendy, artist haunt in the shadow of Sacre Coere cathdrel overlooking 19th-century Paris. His novel music, isolated lifestyle and unusual fashion (always a dark velvet suit and derby) were eccentric yet endeared him to - not only to the poets, writers and artists of Montmartre - but to the Parisian musical elite. Another oddity of Satie was his contentment - and sometimes insistance - that his music be relegated to the background as to not interfere with patron's festivities. Where Beethoven or Wagner would have cringed to have their compositions played as "musical wallpaper" (or featured on a "Relaxation" recording like this), Erik Satie would likely have been pleased. In this respect, his music was perhaps the precursor of modern "Muzak" heard by many an elevator user.
Over three-forths of Satie's compositions are for solo piano. Often he gave these pieces strange titles and programmic references - such as his most famous work, Gymnopedies, which is related to some ancient festival honoring Apollo. In fact, this gentle, melodic piece so charmed Debussy that he composed an orchestral version of it, emphasising its dreamy qualities. However, on this CD, this famous piece is heard four times in different variations, which presents a great risk of trivialization and weariness. That is one downfall of this collection.
Satie's music indeed does fit well with the "Relaxation" theme with its simple, slower-paced, child-like innocent melodies bathed in rich, yet austere harmonies. In this respect Satie's music is often downgraded by music critics as "lightweight compositions from a French eccentric." They have their point. But, the weary looking for some "nice music" will often find Satie's works a balm - free of pretention, complication and attitude. Yet, it was this simplicity and minimalistic approach that earned Satie the title, "The Precursor" as his textures and forms foreshadowed the minimalist music of John Cage and the Surrealism/Dada movements in art.
Like any, Satie's music is not for everyone. At times the repeated-note simplicity can be downright boring; other pieces can remind one of a player piano at the cabernet. Yet, many pieces have great charm and appeal once you get past their simplicity. So, overall, this CD is a decent sampling of Satie's music for piano - solo or with one or two other instruments - recorded in good sound quality. Also, there are few if any loud outbursts for those wanting to nod off in their relaxation. But, the overplayed Gymnopedies pieces are unfortunate - typical when the public gets hold of a popular piece and plays it to death.

Joan Tower's music makes some demands on listeners, but it always rewards your attention. These are mostly pictorial pieces, with visual imagery in their content and titles. For example, you might not be able to see the exact image Tower describes just from hearing the String Quartet Night Fields, but the impression of rippling wheat in the darkness makes great sense after you've heard the piece. For listeners with even a mild sense of adventure, I recommend Tower's music highly. And if you like to hear music that challenges the players even more than the listeners, you'll definitely enjoy hearing what these fine musicians do to bring Tower's ideas to life. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
A classic.......2006-02-20
I am very surprised that I am the first to review this CD. It is one of my all-time favorites. Joan Tower is one of the most prominent voices in classical music today. Early in her career Tower’s music was very serial. Later however she broke with the serial movement and began righting in a more organic style; often drawing her inspiration from nature. This CD includes her famous Black Topaz, a chamber music piece for percussion winds and piano. Trís Lent, which is dedicated to the composer Messiaen, is also a true masterpiece. As for the three other compositions all are very skillfully dun, although they are not Joan Towers most important compositions. All this is performed to the highest level of musicianship. This is definitely a must have CD.

Some New Modern Music From the Ancient Rome.......2006-04-16
This is CD-hypothesis. You would hear the modern "newly imagined" music written mainly by Walter Maioli for Ancient Roman instruments. You would hear the sounds of the antique music, not the music from the Roman sources itself. And the music performed by Syanaulia on this CD is very lively, interesting, theatrical, visible, so you would start to believe that this music is really authentic. It would help you to understand the spirit of the Pax Romana (Peaceful Universe of the Roman Empire). Beautiful booklet with the colour illustrations is included with this CD. So as a modern art form this record is very impressive. Well, it is a kind of fantasy music, but it gives you 3D vision of Roman Empire. Second CD by Synaulia with the music for strings is less interesting - this record sounds more fresh and emotional.
But it wouldn`t satisfy your hunger for the real music of the Antiquity. I highly recommend you CDs by ENSEMBLE DE ORGANOGRAPHIA "Music of the Ancient Greeks", "Music of the Ancient Sumerians, Egyptians and Greeks"!!!
Also try other CD with modern "newly imagined" music in Ancient Greek style -"Melpomen" by Conrad Steinmann and Schola Cantorum Basilensis.
Try also European CDs with the music from the Greek and Roman sources (I think that Ensemble De Organographia - the best performers of this music, but to compare different approaches to Antique music is also very interesting):
Ensemble Kerylos and Annie Belis "Ancient Greek Music" (label K 617);
Musica Romana "Mesomedes" (maxi-single with the music by Mesomedes of Crete) and "Symphonia Panica" (label Emmuty Records; these CDs available only directly from this label).
AWESOME!!! - The best representation I have ever heard!.......2005-08-20
Cranked all the way up, Synaulia has made writing my history research papers (all about ROMA) for school a new experience. After listening to many things - even, shamefully, watching Gladiator to create a stimulating mind set for my papers (as I CANNOT work in silence) - I thought I would never find anything that could come close to Synaulia's two albums.
If anyone is interested in the cultural aspects of Ancient Rome, I would, WITHOUT HESITATION, recommend you buy both the Strings and Wind collections by Synaulia-you will not be disappointed.
Learning all of the roman life.......2005-07-29
Music was real important in te past. It is part of there religion and way of life.
the Synaulia; music from ancient roma cd, is a great help to historian and people how want to understand a little more the life in the roman times.
Ancient Rome Comes Alive.......2005-06-02
This CD is a wonderful collection of music for wind instruments from ancient Rome's imperial period played on accurate replicas of various Roman instruments. This is a great buy for anyone interested in ancient music or the study of ancient Rome.
There are unfortunately few direct sources on the composition of Roman music. Most of the work in this CD is a recreation of what the music would have sounded like based on the range of the instruments, various classical sources, and anthropological studies of present Mediterranean cultures. I strongly disagree with a previous reviewer's giving of a low rating on the basis that the music is not the direct product of Roman sheet music. Although there may be certain inaccuracies in the recomposition of such music, the number of different scholars who participated in producing this work from various disciplines probably makes such inaccuracies rather slim. Furthermore, since there is no direct source for such music nor is it likely that we will ever uncover any, it's better to have this than nothing at all. The music is primarily brass and percussion but it also has string accompaniments for certain pieces. The music is charming and makes one feel as if they are reclining on their sofas, eating dates, and drinking wine in praise of Baccus. The package makes this CD worth every penny as it has a very detailed synopsis of all the instruments, the works themselves, and the work that was involved in this music: the pamphlet is also filled with photographs and drawings of the instruments as well as various Roman frescoes from Pompey depicting Roman social life and the instruments in question.
This is a great contribution to the study of antiquity and a valuable tool for teachers of ancient music, antiquity, or anthropology. This also a great buy for anyone who has broad interests in music and its development. For what you get with this CD it's a steal.
Rome is alive! But did it ever die?.......2005-04-29
Synaulia's CD "Music of Ancient Rome: Volume I" is quite a good reproduction of what Roman music may have been like. Being a student of Latin for 4 years, I was interested when I stumbled across this CD. I bookmarked it and to my suprise and delight it was given to me as a Christmas present. The plastic holder that the CD rests in is very durable and the booklet had many interesting facts, some of which I didn't even know. While the songs may be a bit weird, they're quite good, and some of the songs remind me of some Celtic tunes. The opening track "Pavor" which in Latin translates into the word "panic" or "terror" (I think it would have been more appropriate to have used the Adverb "Pavide", "in panic" but that's just me) is probably my favourite of the tracks. This song is basically of the god Pan inciting panic among people who disturbed the peace of his forest. While this music isn't an exact reproduction of what may have been listened to by the Romans, it brings these tunes from folk sources, poetic rhythm, and others. This is a fantastic CD and I recommend it for people who have historic interests in the Ancient World and don't mind listening to something a little different.

Album Description
They are built of natural stone, these noble halls of this world heritage site. A fascinating thought when you're standing under arches that are hundreds of years old. The stones seem to whisper - because, in the quiet of their existence, you seem to feel how they are imbued with all those voices and instruments that filled these walls with their sounds - violins, the sound of trumpets, the organ and singing' wood and metal. But in the end, isn't it the material of the body that makes the sound of an instrument? It was the sound of the glass armonica that inspired Mozart to write a minuet and, after hearing how his composition sounded on the glass harmonica, Arvo Pärt gave the Ensemble his one-time permission to perform "Pari Intervallo" with the "glass instrument". Even Gottfried Keller described the sound and effect of the instrument as "...then it began to play in the most ghostly tones I have ever heard...". Now, the glass armonica is made of glass - plain old glass - melted sand, nothing more. But this is also the same basic material as these world heritage walls are made of - natural sandstone... And during this concert by these Viennese artists, it was as if I could feel the walls vibrating and I thought I heard the very stones singing. (Josef-Stefan Kindler, K&K Verlagsanstalt)
