The Mosaiques Quartet is one of the most accomplished groups performing on so-called "authentic" instruments. There was a time not too long ago when, particularly in string music, this meant a shrill, scratchy sound and dubious intonation. Thank heaven those days have largely passed! This group, in particular, has a warm, bass-heavy sound of astonishing richness, and they play this music with a very welcome freedom and flexibility of rhythm. These quartets are stunning: they are widely regarded as the works which invented the mature classical style, and as such they are among the most important (and enjoyable) pieces of music ever written.
