For once, a CD compilation nearly lives up to its self-promoting title--unlike many that carry around such heavy terminology as "ultimate," "best," "essential" or "only." This collection is not the only José Carreras recording a discriminating opera lover will want, but it provides an excellent overall view of some of the singer's best work, his strengths (notably in Puccini and Donizetti), his weaknesses (he should leave "Di quella pira" to more muscular voices, such as Plácido Domingo's), and his legacy on record, from hardcore classics to borderline pop material. --Joe McLellan

        The richness of Jose Carreras' voice is manifest on this CD. Unfortunately, the recording quality of this live album is not great, and a number of annoying sounds (audience and
        otherwise) distract one.

        Some samples of his art:

        "La donna e mobile" is richly sung, with the proper spirit of the wretched Duke. Carreras displays a rich, smooth voice. The work is taken at an appropriate pace.

        "Questa e quella," from the same opera ("Rigoletto") is also well sung. This is a spirited version. Thankfully, no affectations.

        From "Tosca," there are the twin arias--""E lucevan le stelle" and "Recondita armonia." Both are well and richly sung. Carreras provides a dramatic rendering of these wonderful arias.

        Finally, "Che gelida manina" from Puccini's "La Boheme." Well sung; his smooth voice fits this work nicely. He provides a sense of passion toward Mimi. He hits the high note well.

        Despite the issues regarding recording quality, this is a nice CD.
