This is a carefully selected series of works designed to spotlight aspects of classical musical evolution from a distinctly French perspective. The arrangements are diverse and engaging, and the playing is unusually crisp, clean, and sweet. This CD has an excellent sound and creates a wonderful ambience. Strongly recommended.
Fantastic interpretations refresh the guitar's repertoire.......2005-01-09
This disc is amazing from the first allemande of Loeillet to the concluding modern Passacaille of Jean Francaix. These are truly incredible pieces played with great care and musicality. What I really enjoyed was the fact that I hadn't heard almost any of these pieces ever played before on the guitar. Just as the transcriptions of Albeniz and Granados opened a new world in terms of expanding the repertoire of the guitar, these refreshing new takes on Debussy and Ravel will satisfy in the same way. Ravel's "Piece in the form of a Habernera" is magnificent, probably my favorite of the disc. In fact, I believe it fits better on guitar through the brilant interpretation of Mr. Feasley than in the orchestral versions for which it was orginal written. The dances of Debussy, as well, are like of breath of fresh air. Listen to the sweeping, enchanting sound of the Mazurka, or the seducing, gypsy melodies of Danse Bohemienne. I hope Mr. Feasley puts up sound samples soon. For they can speak much louder and stonger than my words. However, I cannot stress enough my pleasure in discovering this album. It is truly a gem and the recorded sound is wonderful. Do yourself a favor and get it. I promise you too will be delighted.
