Graham Johnson, the guiding spirit behind Hyperion's epic complete edition of Schubert songs, has shown excellent judgment in choosing his singers and developing his programs around them. Here we have the late Lucia Popp singing a selection of songs to texts by a variety of poets, including Collin, Jacobi, Mayhofer, and above all, Claudius, whose Ode to a Nightengale became one of Schubert's most delightful short lyrics. A delightful program. --David Hurwitz

Lucia Popp will be greatly missed as one of the most unique and versatile sopranos ever recorded in the German Repertoire. This Cd I truely believe is her last great recording. The warmth and distinct vocality she brings to Schubert is as memorable as it is moving. Popp skillfully jumps through songs from various periods in Schubert's life with attention to detail and the evocative qualities a vocalist needs to carry us into Schubert's world.
