5 out of 5 stars Virtuosic Trumpet: Baroque And Classical Showcase.......2004-02-22

This album is an incredible showcase for the trumpet and the orchestra, in other words, the trumpet concerto. Hakan Hardenberger, the featured trumpet player, is highly talented and at the top of his game. Even the great jazz and classical trumpeter Winston Marsalis does'nt seem to reach the flights of fancy on the trumpet as does Hakan Hardenberger. Hardenberger masters the trumpet to perfection, capturing every nuance and every tone, from fortissimo fanfares to the softest pianissimo. On this compilation are the trumpet concerti of Baroque and Classical Era composers, among them Corelli and Albinoni and the Classical masters Franz Joseph Haydn and Leopold Mozart, Mozart's father. The sheer scale and magnetism of this music cannot be neglected. It is the greatest gathering of trumpet concerti ever made. The trumpet was perhaps the most fascinating instrument for Baroque composers. The trumpet produces grand, triumphant tones when played forte. It was an instrument that was displayed in ceremonial pomp- weddings, coronations and marches. The Baroque composers were sponsored by kings so they were expected to compose music for trumpet, which could be expressive not only as a fanfare for the king himself, but as an instrument of many dynamics. It can be played softly and slowly, which seems to create a nocturnal, reflective mood and staccato and fast-paced which made the music sound exciting and lively. In my opinion, it was the premier instrument of the Baroque Age.

The cd opens with the Trumpet Concerto In E Flat Major by Johann Hummel. This colorful piece is particularily impressive as it really explores the dynamic potential for the trumpet. It's third movement, the Rondo, is very exciting music, as it is played very fast and in a bouncy, dance-like manner. The Trumpet Concerto by Stamitz, Hertel and Richter are very stylish and must have been highly admired in the Baroque Era. The Trumpet concerto in E by Franz Joseph Haydn, who influenced Mozart, is beautiful, especially in its serenade-style andante second movement. In the last cd, Leopold Mozart's trumpet concerto is featured, and it's a good work. Perhaps his son Mozart greatly admired it, though Mozart did'nt really expand on trumpet concerti himself nor really ever showcased the instrument greatly. There are trumpet arrangements for the famous Albinoni Adagio in G, which on this version, sounds chilling, dark and dramatic. The cd concludes with trumpet versions of Bach's Organ Preludes and the Bach/Gounod Ave Maria.

4 out of 5 stars superb playing.......2003-10-30

Hardenberger is indeed an extraordinary. The playing is right up there with the best of them. One thing unique to hardnberger is his ability to lock in ever note of every passage reguardless of register, speed, etc. In addition he playes with great character. The only reason i give hims less than 5 stars is because his lyricism, the most important thing, is surpassed by Maurice Andre and Phil Smith without questiong. especially after seing all of them live and buying their CDs. He is definitely among the greatests ever.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Trumpeter in the Business.......2003-05-25

It's a rare treat for a reviewer when he can throw caution to the winds and go out on a limb for a musician. This is such an occasion for me. Hakan Hardenberger is a phenomenon. I think he is the Babe Ruth, the Wayne Gretzky, the Michael Jordan, the Vladimir Horowitz, the Jascha Heifetz of trumpet players.

Hardenberger is a Swedish trumpeter who made his first recording (Haydn, Hummel, Hertel, and Stamitz trumpet concertos, with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields under Neville Marriner, on Philips) in 1986 when he was only 25 years old (in the cover photo of the original CD he looks like a boy). The first time I played this debut CD of his, my jaw dropped and I could hardly believe my ears. His playing was a revelation--absolutely stunning. I'd never heard trumpet playing to compare with it. In my opinion, with his first two CDs young Hardenberger not only moved into the top rank of trumpeters; he swept right past his competitors to the head of the class. I've compared a number of his baroque concerto performances, here and elsewhere, with those of other famous trumpeters, and he always comes out on top. I believe him to be in a league of his own. He has everything: virtuosity and technique to burn, dead-on intonation, clean trills, smooth legato, expressive shading, beauty of tone, brilliant high notes, enormous dynamic range. He is also a sound musician, with taste and a sense of style. His arsenal is complete and unassailable; there is no chink in his armor.

Everything that was on that debut CD is now in this Philips Duo set, which is a much better value, because it offers two generously filled CDs--72:55 and 78:27--for the price of one, adding most of the contents of two later Hardenberger CDs of baroque music for trumpet (the recordings here were made from 1986 through 1993). It's a good buy, and if you're going to own only one collection of baroque trumpet music, this is the one I'd recommend.

The trumpet has always been a difficult instrument to record and reproduce accurately. Here, although the consistently excellent digital recording presents Hardenberger very much front and center, it captures the timbre, "bite," and wide dynamic range of his trumpet with exemplary vividness and fidelity. On a top-quality playback system, he sounds like he's standing right between the speakers playing for you. And what playing it is! Not to be missed.

Hardenberger's second CD, of Telemann Trumpet Concertos, also accompanied by the ASMF, this time under Iona Brown, was recorded in 1987 (again on Philips). It too is marvelous, fully as impressive as his first CD, but unfortunately none of it is included in the Philips Duo reviewed here, so you have to acquire it separately. It's well worth it.

Long live the king!

5 out of 5 stars Virtuosic... Incredible.......2001-08-06

You don't have to be a fan of the instrument in order to appreciate and become overwhelmed by the beauty, the splendor and acrobatics of the trumpet. In the Baroque era, it was a instrument for the royal treatment and heralded arrival of kings and war. The performances here are excellent- Hardenberger, I Musici and Neville Marriner and his orchestra deliver virtuosic renditions of Haydn's Trumpet Concerto in E flat, Hummel's, Hertel's, Molter's and Albinoni's concerti, as well as incredible arrangements of Ave Maria by Bach and Albinoni's Adagio.

5 out of 5 stars A non-trumpet player's view..........2001-02-12

Although I love classical music and have done so for a long time, I must confess that I am not a trumpet player. With that said, I must say that these two CDs are wonderful. My first recording of the Hummel and the Haydn concertos was the second Marsalis/Leppard/ECO recording on Sony Classical (titled Wynton Marsalis - The London Concert). Inexperienced with trumpet recordings at the time, I really treasured the CD. After all, a big name artist known for his virtuosity was performing the technically demanding concertos. What more could you ask for? After a while, though, I began to feel that Marsalis didn't really do it for me in these works. Sure, he played with a flair (and what a flair it was), but he lacked the focused, rich tone that I've come to associate with great trumpet players (Herseth comes to mind here).

The current reviewed recording, on the other hand, is quite a piece of gem. Even though I have never heard of Hardenberger before (you trumpet players out there please excuse my ignorance), he delivers precisely what I am looking for. Hardenberger has the centered tone that most trumpeters would envy, yet he lacked none of the technical virtuosity needed for the music. His vibrato is light and very classical (as opposed to the wider jazz vibrato). On top of all that, he shows much understanding and affinity for the various works on these two CDs.

All of this for the price of 1 CD. An excellent introduction to the core trumpet repertoire.

5 out of 5 stars Very good.......2001-05-01

Hae-won Chang has recorded two volumes of Bach's keyboard concerti. At the moment, Amazon carries only the second volume. But both are excellent recordings of all the seven surviving solo keyboard concerti on piano. Chang's articulation is crisp and expressively colorful, helping carry the often-suppressed counterpoint in these works above the orchestra--especially notable for concerti 1052 and 1054 on the first volume. Some of the performances here stand up to some of the other great recordings of these works on piano. The 1052, for instance, on volume one, is dramatic with unwaning impetus, rivaling even Gould's performance with Bernstein. Although the 1055 concerto is less successful, the famous 1056 concerto presented in volume two is dramatic in its first movement surging tempo, preparing for the calm and tastefully rendered second movement. And the third movement, so often, it seems, played with banging and clanging by many pianists, rings clearly here, mirroring the first movement's rush. The orchestra, of modern size, is up to the task as well; the 1058 concerto shows off the strings and continuo especially well in their brightness and range of force. One cannot go wrong with this set when looking for consistently fresh and clear performances on piano of Bach's solo keyboard concerti.

5 out of 5 stars Great Performance!.......2000-10-27

The Naxos disc is really a great bargain, considering the wonderful and colourful performance of the soloist. Chang plays much better than Gavrilov, who seems to be unable to produce anything except staccato in Bach's concertos. Really nice!

5 out of 5 stars Bargain Bach.......2000-10-15

Hae-won Chang plays these keyboard concertos beautifully and is sympathetically accompanied. This is playing of real distinction - direct and unforced: the CD would be a first recommendation even if three times the price.

5 out of 5 stars Ditto for Volume Two-very good!.......1999-12-10

If you want Bach's concertos on modern piano, and you don't want to pay full price (or even if you do), look no further.

3 out of 5 stars An entertaining fun disc, historically inaccurate.......2005-06-25

If you would like to hear Bach's keyboard concertos as Bach actually intended them to be heard, you would do well to look elsewhere. Naxos later produced a series of recordings with the Cologne Chamber Orchestra directed by Helmut Müller-Brühl in which historical performance practice is ideally combined with modern instruments - these are available at the usual incredible Naxos price; if you prefer historical instruments, then I suggest looking at recordings by The English Concert/Trevor Pinnock (on Deutsche Grammophon) or by the ensemble Le Concert Francais/Pierre Hantai (on Auvidis-Astrée).

Nevertheless, if you prefer the modern piano to a harpsichord and are not too worried about questions of "authentic" style, you will probably enjoy this 1990 Naxos disc on which Korean pianist Hae-won Chang gives a classy performance quite brilliantly captured by the Slovakian engineers. The accompanying Camerata Cassovia, directed by Robert Stankovsky, seems to have had quite a field day, too, although the engineers have ensured that it is always the soloist in the foreground. A fun disc on which pure entertainment takes priority over any musicological considerations.

5 out of 5 stars First rate!.......2000-03-03

Beautiful music beautifully done. The soloist's phrasing is crystal clear and calm. I have four other recording of these pieces on both harpsicord and piano, and this is my favorite by far.

5 out of 5 stars Chang's Bach Piano Concertos are a joy!.......1999-12-10

What a fun CD! The performances are excellent, the sound is very good and the music is glorious. If you want the Bach keyboard concertos on a modern piano, here you go. Note that while everything is on modern instruments, tempos are quick and the playing is lively, thus providing the best in period performance practices.

Bachiana is a sterling collection of concertos by Bach's sons. The most substantial work on this well-filled disc is C.P.E. Bach's Concerto for Harpsichord and Fortepiano from 1788, the year of his death. The two instruments are treated as equals, and the orchestra plays a significant role as well. The first movement offers a unique combination of drama (especially in the forceful orchestral interjections) and piquant wit, also characteristic of the Presto finale. Those movements sandwich a grave Larghetto of austere beauty. It's a deeply personal, perhaps valedictory, work. The other selections have plenty of appeal, too. J.C. Bach's Sinfonia Concertante is a charming work of deceptive lightness. W.F.E. Bach's Flute Concerto opens with a first movement featuring complex textures and moves on to a gently lovely Largo and a delightful Vivace finale. The least known of these four Bachs, J.C.F., contributes a fascinating Concerto for Fortepiano and Viola, notable for fetching interplay between the instruments and the integrated orchestral role. --Dan Davis

5 out of 5 stars Good Stuff from the Bach Boys.......2003-11-11

Let's face it. There have been many of these "Sons of Bach" albums, and while they introduce us to the wealth of talent in the Bach family, they often end up just underscoring by how much Johann Sebastian's talent outstripped that of the rest of the clan. I can't say you'll come away from this disc with a new appreciation of Bach's prolific progeny, but I will be surprised if you don't find this is one of the most enjoyable and successful such collections to come along. First, the music. As the notes to this recording point out, Wilhelm Friedemann's concerto is a pretty exciting recent scholarly discovery. I doubt, as the notes suggest, that it has any claim to rival in popularity J. S.'s Suite in B Minor, but I will say this: it is just about the equal of C. P. E. Bach's well-known and admired concertos, with a slow movement that has the tender melodiousness of the best of J. C. Bach, while the outer movements have some of the clever harmonic-melodic twists and turns that C. P. E. is famous for.

Unfortunately, the lone representative here from J. C. is attractive and diverting but not one of his best works. It sounds, as all the lesser pieces by this composer sound, like Mozart without genius. There is better J. C. Bach music around.

But then the work by J. Ch. F. Bach, the least remembered of the Bach sons, is well above what I have heard from him in the past. The Concerto for Fortepiano and Viola is a novel concept, and it is approached with imagination by J. Ch. F. The quality of invention is well sustained in this big work--at almost 26 minutes by far the most substantial composition on the disc. I liked especially the opening movement marked allegro con brio, a successful blend of fire and lyricism. While it is the most striking movement, the others have their moments of beauty and drama too; overall, this is a concerto of great interest.

Last and best is the valedictory concerto of C. P. E. Bach, certainly the greatest of J. S.'s sons. The Concerto for Harpsichord and Fortepiano is an off-beat masterwork in which C. P. E. bids farewell to the harpsichord by playing it off against its young cousin the fortepiano, now in the ascendancy. The concerto is a wonderful exploration of the sonorities of both instruments, and if they were rivals in the music world, here they are instead civilized conversationalists. If you enjoy C. P. E. Bach's strange harmonic explorations and melodies that turn on a dime, here they are in extremely enjoyable abundance. The last movement is a joyous, youthful romp, remarkable coming from the 70-something C. P. E.

If the music is fine, the music making is extraordinary. Musica Antiqua and Goebel always have novel things to say about the novelties they profer, and these performances are no exception. The playing is wonderfully fluid, dramatic when it needs to be (I always love the horns), plangent and tender when that is called for.

Excellent sound rounds out the package: it's close but atmospheric, with great detail as well as timbral realism. I highly recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars Interesthing evolution to the romantic period.......2003-03-14

After an anthology of the ascendants of J.S.B., Goebel is concernerd about his four sons. The most convincing moment of this Cd is the "Symphonie concertante pour violon et violoncelle", which is elegant and refined. A big surprise: "Le Concerto pour flûte" of Wilhelm Frieedemann is astonishing. It is full of strenght ! The flautist,Verena Fischer,is radiant. The curious concerto of Johann Christoph Friedrich, for " hammerflügel, alto and orchestra" is strange and beautiful. You must hear Robert Hill (formidable at the hammerflügel) hold a dialogue with Reinhard Goebel (alto). This is delightful! The "Concerto pour pianoforte, clavecin et orchestre" of Carl Philipp Emmanuel is the most known piece of this CD. Goebel and his brilliant soloist are palying with a frenzy spirit ! Very stimulating CD !

The sound is deep and delicious ! Archiv does it again. Goebel too.

4 out of 5 stars Mostly Magnificent Menuhin, with a Few Reservations.......2004-01-06

The recent trend toward classical box sets focusing on the performer instead of the composer (see my reviews of the various DG/Decca "Original Masters" sets) continues with EMI's new "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist." Sure EMI's past sets have showcased individual performances by Samson Francois, Eugen Jochum and Rudolf Kempe to name a few, but it was always under the heading of a given composer's works, and in the cases mentioned above, to Chopin's piano pieces, Bruckner's Symphonies and Strauss' Orchestral Works respectively. Therefore, this Menuhin collection is the first of EMI's "Budget Box Sets" to showcase a performer playing the works of a variety of composers.

As Menuhin was an EMI recording artist for an incredible 68 years (1931-99), his performances for the label number in the hundreds. With so much music from which to choose, this 10-disc set aims "to highlight some of those alternative versions, including recordings that have not been easily available since the days of LP and others that have never previously appeared on CD." Therefore, the obvious mainstream, easily attainable recordings are omitted here -- for example, the Beethoven/Mendelssohn VCs with Furtwangler, the Elgar VC with the composer conducting, and the Bruch/Mendelssohn VCs with Susskind and Kurtz.

However, a lot of this material has been on disc before on titles which the serious collector most likely already owns. Most of the Bach is currently available as part of the Bach "Budget Box Series" title. The Bruch, Mendelssohn, Brahms and Vivaldi VCs were all available in the now out-of-print 2CD EMI Seraphim series. The Elgar and the Walton are still available in the "British Composers" series. And perhaps most annoyingly, the previously unpublished Beethoven VC and Tchaikovsky "Serenade melancolique" (available as a single disc), and the Beethoven Romance No. 2 (available on an EMI Encore title) were both reissued just a few months back.

But let's focus on the positive, which are the other rare performances, the most significant being the never before reissued 1954 performance of Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 4 with John Pritchard and the Philharmonia. Other elusive recordings include Viuextemps and Paganini VCs with Fistoulari, Lalo and Saint-Saens works with Goossens, and excellent Berg and Bartok accounts with Boulez. Though I'm delighted at their inclusion, of lesser importance is a 1965 Bartok VC No. 2 with Dorati -- his mono EMI with Furtwangler and an earlier account with Dorati on Mercury Living Presence are far superior. Also, neither the Sibelius (Boult, 1955) nor Nielsen (Woldike, 1952) Concertos are truly Menuhin's cups of tea.

My last complaint has to do with the packaging. I know I'm being rather trite but it seems that EMI has taken the "slim" out of slim, paper-sleeved box sets with their latest batch of releases. Both this title and the new box of Liszt Orchestral Works by Masur are noticeably thicker than previous EMI sets featuring a similar number of discs. A minor point, but us serious classical collectors need every centimeter of space on our increasingly crowded CD shelves, not to mention the amount of wasted packaging.

Overall though, despite the fact that "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist" is not as essential a reissue as its counterparts in the "Original Masters" series, it is a delightful set that most collectors will thoroughly enjoy.

Amazon.com essential recording

Glenn Gould was this century's greatest Bach player, so these legendary recordings are self-recommending. While other fine pianists have made powerful statements in this music, no one sounds anything like Gould. His phenomenal clarity of articulation, digital control, and well, just plain interesting way with the music set him completely apart from the competition. With playing of this individuality and quality, it's pointless to engage in any debate with respect to the appropriateness of the piano versus the harpsichord. Scholars and pedants may continue to argue, but the fact is, it doesn't matter. Great musicianship always serves great music best. --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Best Performance Ever Achieved.......2007-02-12

This is a superlative recording of one of the most famous pieces by Kapellmeister Johann Sebastian Bach played by the best Bach interpreter, Mr. Glenn Gould. I value this recording so much that I often find myself avoiding listening to it too much because this recording is like a beautiful sunset, which should only be fully enjoyed without any wastefulness when all the conditions are ideal. I have owned this recording for many years, but I decided that I have no choice but to write a review now after reading a very gratuitous and childish review below by a certain [...]. While I do not care about the provincialism of other people, I was very worried that some novices reading that review might be mislead and coerced away from this most delightful recording and miss the experience of a lifetime.

For those that do not know, Glenn Gould is considered to be the best Bach interpreter of this century by the vast majority of non-professional listeners and professional artists. Gould's performances have become a standard; so much so that any new Bach performance on a piano is almost immediately compared to Gould. True, there are some critics who believe that Gould uses too much staccato in some of Bach's compositions, but nevertheless, if we remember that most of these pieces Bach had composed for a harpsichord, which is a staccato instrument by nature, we can understand why Gould would select such a radical approach.

Bach's fugues are very complex and often the performer is faced with a challenge to communicate three, four, or even more melodies simultaneously. A romantic, legato performance hopelessly mixes all the notes together drowning any possibility of expressing all these melodies at the same time - at best, some of the melodies go into the background, e.g., the left hand notes, while other melodies, like the notes for the right hand, come to the surface. Only a very scrupulous listening can reveal these melodies buried in the background. What makes so many people to fall in love with Glenn Gould is his uncanny ability to not only express all the melodies distinctly at the same time, but also to bring his left and right hand notes together into a mellifluous, sometimes tempestuous, freely flowing melody. Everything is right there for you to listen to.

Even if you are one of those harsh critics who absolutely cannot accept a staccato performance, I am sure that you will still like this performance because the recording flows so well that one can't argue that Glenn uses too much staccato. I am not a listener who is limited only to Gould. I embrace many different styles of performances simply because no one interpretation is the "only way." If you are very interested to hear how else these compositions can be performed, such as more romantically, I recommend you listen to these same compositions played by [...]. Both do an excellent job. You will also have the opportunity to compare these performances to Glenn Gould's interpretation. Additionally, I would recommend that you hear these concertos being performed on a violin, organ, and harpsichord. After so many years and so many different recordings I have realized that Gould's performance is the absolute best. It doesn't mean there aren't other excellent recordings; it means that Glenn adds something extra to the performance that somehow when you combine those extra features with the genius of Johann Sebastian Bach, you suddenly seem to reinvent one of the greatest works of arts of the Western Civilization.

This recording is indeed breathtaking. I have read several books on Bach's works and his biography and I have to say that his genius is divine, yet I am not even religious! Mozart and Beethoven, among numerous other composers, have revered Bach and learned from him as well. At least for me, there has never been any composer as powerful as Herr Bach. If you are new to Bach, this recording is a great starting point. Make sure that you continue your reveling odyssey and listen to Bach's other greatest works[...] If you have any questions about Bach and his performances, feel free to contact me (ekhekoyan at yahoo.com).

1 out of 5 stars A Review in Dissent.......2006-06-06

I find myself in disagreement with all the other reviewers of this performance. I think Gould does both emotional and technical violence to Bach's music. One reviewer speaks of Gould's "staccato" attacks, and praises the interpretation anyway. Doesn't that seem incoherent? My problem with the performance, however, is not so much what I hear but what I don't hear. First, there's the chromaticism of Bach's music, which I don't hear in Gould's performance because it's hammer-heavy; dissonance is most piquant when prepared by clear, transparent consonance (which is nearly impossible, I grant, on a modern piano). Then there's the counterpoint, the joyful mathematical complexity of Bach's music, which Gould sacrifices to his thundering top-voice dramaticization.
I wrote a previous negative review of this disk, which I find has been eradicated. In other words, censorship is possible on Amazon. I'm quite disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars "Don't be frightened, Mr. Gould is here ...".......2006-04-24

I dare to say that nobody could even better perform with the same clarity and precision as those of Glenn Gould. He demonstrates why J.S. Bach is still the maestro of all masters of all time.

I'm a researcher, and believe it or not, I get my ideas when I listen to Bach. This collection is a must-to-listen for everybody who needs an illuminated inspiration in his/her subject.

Listen and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars In The Spirit..........2005-08-23

Glenn Gould is one of the most controversial pianists ever ... some people love him ,some hate him ,but they all agree that he is a true bravura player and a serious virtuoso on the piano .
When it comes to bach we immediately recall the famous saying : Bach is the mathematician of music , and Gould's famous ( mechanical ) technique on the piano really sets us in the mood for bach ... i dont believe that J.S himself would have played those pieces better than Gould ...

I have always been fond of the piano concertos ,and i listened to them performed by multiple artists ,but Gould is the maestro undebatably .

I would also recommend Bach's partitas by Gould too ...

Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars I'm prejudiced, and these are my favorite versions........2005-08-04

I started listening to Glenn Gould almost 50 years ago, and have always
admired the precision with which he played. It evokes very refined
emotions and clarity of thought, as I think Bach intended.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent version (but not the best).......2001-11-30

As I have said in other music reviews I tend to review the music and so i give this recording a full 5 stars. However, I have heard and own several recordings (incl. this one) of the Bach piano concertos and i find this one to feature a tempo that is too slow for my taste. Having said that, the interpreters are excellent and if you like your Bach a little 'slower' then this the version for you. I do love the balance between the piano and the orchestra and the clarity of each note. for thsoe new to this music, I think the first mov. of the BWV 1052 concerto and the 2nd of the BWV 1056 are the highlights.
My favorite recording of the Bach concertos for piano is perhaps somewhat obscure now. It is performed by Cyprien Katsaris with the Liszt Chamber Orchestra. Once you hear the BWV 1052 played at that speed - with an excellent bass accent in the first mov.- you will find hard to appreciate other versons. However, I have found Maria Joao Pires to approach the same effect. Other than that the music is amazing. I'm listening to it as i write and can't stop tapping my feet, snapping fingers and loving every note.

5 out of 5 stars Just one word - Heifetz.......2007-01-12

Ask any classical violinist today who is the best. Heifetz will always be mentioned. My wife is a violinist and studied from the same school (Leopold Auer) as did Heifetz. So, when any piece is played by Heifetz, you know it will be masterfully done. Again, we had this as a vinyl record and wanted the CD.

5 out of 5 stars Firm and never too sweet.......2005-09-30

I am not so lucky that I can trust or distrust one single interpreter on autopilot, always enjoy Heifetz, always dislike Heifetz, always delight in Karajan, always abhor him etc. etc. I happen to love Oistrakh's Beethoven op. 61, I happen to hate Heifetz' Beethoven op. 61; I happen to hate Oistrakh on Bach's violin concertos and I happen to love Heifetz on the same; I happen to love both of them on Brahms op. 77.
Heifetz is inclined to fast tempos. There are pros and cons to any choice of speed. Slow proceedings might feel more analytic, more profound, more lyrical, more sensual, more romantic - or even schmaltzy. Fast tempos might produce great intensity, give a better image of the concept, the shape, the outlines of the music, the overall architecture. Fast proceedings may also feel quite cerebral, ascetic, unaffected, in a positive sense artless, candid, direct, genuine, natural, straightforward and true. Sometimes you feel that the interpreter overshoots the mark by slow tempos, sometimes that he/she misses the mark by too much speed.
Even when I disagree with Heifetz, I don't feel him selfish. There is no mannerism about him. He is true to the music. He is never too sweet, never too romantic or syrupy. And on the other hand; when or if you indulge in sentimentality, please feel free to do so; I do. But if the composer doesn't, Heifetz won't serve me kitsch.

I've bought this CD for the two Bach concertos only. When it comes to Bach, I think elegance and dignity is crucial. Very much of the historical informed performances are quite speedy, and in this sense Heifetz could be hailed as their old godfather. But unlike the lot of HIP-performers, Heifetz has no mannerism, no strange rhythms; he plays straightforwardly and firmly but with long strokes when he feels the music needs it.
Heifetz plays not as fast as Hilary Hahn here - I agree pretty much with her slow & steady Beethoven op. 61, but not with her too speedy Bach-concertos. Hahn wins the race, but Heifetz enjoys it; he is in the energy, the flow of the music, not in some game to win. In the slow movements, Heifetz proves that less may be more; it is really touching. In the fast movements his playing is pure energy.
The sound quality (1953) leaves very much to be desired, especially by the first concerto BWV 1041 in a-minor. Moreover, you get only two Bach concertos here; the double concerto you'll find with much better sound quality (1961) on Amazon search: B00003OP6J. Sound quality or not; both these Heifetz-CDs are unmissable! And don't trust them to be available for ever!

One HIP-performer very much in line with Heifetz is Sigiswald Kuijken; check him out on German Amazon ([...] search: B000026NHZ for samples on real audio, free download possible), better sound than Heifetz, all the concertos on one CD and next to no HIP-mannerisms and HIP-dogmatism. For buying here at Amazon, with no samlpes, search: B000026NHZ. The sound is much better than the bad quality of the samples indicates, yet, unfortunately, Kuijken cannot replace Heifetz, I am sorry for that, not fully replace him. But as Kuijken comes in velvety sound and all three violin concertos on one disk, there is no real competition.

3 out of 5 stars The Heifetz Paradox.......2004-05-23

Heifetz was a great fiddler - no question. Near-flawless intonation, precise rhythm, polished tone, and a supreme ease in handling fast tempos: for many, Heifetz is the supreme violinist. I once admired Heifetz and his pyrotechnic wonders, but now his playing strikes me as rather empty. Perhaps it all comes down to just how you define great artistry.

My belief is that all great concert performers fall into one of two broad categories: those who use their instruments to play a composer's music, and those who simply use the music to play their instruments. Violinists who belong in the first category -sincere artists whose over-arching goal is to serve the composer and offer up a well thought-out and deeply felt interpretation - include such luminaries as Adolph Busch, Joseph Szigeti, David Oistrakh, Leonid Kogan, Johanna Martzy, and Szymon Goldberg. Such pianists are exemplified by the otherwise very different Artur Schnabel and Sviatoslav Richter. Among conductors and singers, I would single out Furtwangler and Callas, respectively.

And then there are those performers who focus on displaying their virtuoso capabilities, with interpretations that are often merely efficient and rather shallow. To my ears, such different conductors as Toscanini, Szell, and Karajan are in this category. Among pianists, Horowitz is perhaps the supreme example. Vocalists like Caruso and Pavarotti are also fairly typical. As for the great violinists, Heifetz strikes me as paramount in putting technical perfection ahead of insightful musicianship.

I certainly have no grudge against charismatic showmanship and dazzling execution. I enjoy hearing Michael Rabin's awe-inspiring execution in Paganini's Caprices, and Vasa Prihoda's gypsy-style abandon is utterly hypnotic in most everything he played. But for me, Heifetz has a mere surface glitter that simply doesn't wear well over time.

The Bach Concertos on this CD are cranked out with dutiful accuracy. Just try listening to Oistrakh with Barshai in BMW 1041 - or Martzy and, above all, Busch in BMW 1042 - and you can't help but notice how much of this music's spiritual depth is missing with Heifetz. The Mozart K. 454 is a rather faceless affair - was there ever a more anonymous piano accompanist than Brooks Smith? Heifetz here reminds me of those high school beauty queens who surround themselves with plain girlfriends. By contrast, Arthur Grumiaux and Clara Haskil (M&A 860) not only offer a truly engaging collaboration, but superior pianism and better fiddling in the bargain. Heifetz executes the Paganini with little of Rabin's exuberance. Heifetz plays the Vitali Chaconne beautifully, but without Oistrakh's heart (BMG).

I will always admire Heifetz with Munch in the Prokofiev 2nd Violin Concerto. But even there, spend just a few minutes with Kogan & Cameron, or the earlier version with Kondrashin, and you will discover that there can be more warmth and passion in this music. Kogan was a great admirer of Heifetz and very nearly matched him in virtuosity. Other violinists weren't always so respectful: Busch once tartly observed that most everything Heifetz played ended up sounding like lukewarm Glazunov.

In the end, Heifetz and his fiddling demonstrate a time-worn aesthetic truth: mere technical excellence can never transcend a lack of artistic conviction. For me, a steady diet of Heifetz is like having only marshmallows for dinner.

5 out of 5 stars Heifetz does it again!.......2000-07-12

I am a young violinist, not quite novice, not quite semi-professional. I am beginning to study Vitali's Chaconne which is featured on this album but I had not heard it yet. My teacher searched through her never ending collection of classical CDs and this was the one she pulled out. One word, wow. Heifetz's performance of Chaconne is phenominal! He shines even on the most difficlt passages and shys away from nothing. His clarity is astounding on sections that I would not even know how to approach. Hearing it has inspired me to make my own attempt at it, and maybe, just maybe, I too can eventually reach the same level of perfection which Heifitz is never without.
