5 out of 5 stars awesome l'arc album.......2007-07-04

Do not read Crow Winters Review of l'arc en ciel. It is one of the most unaccurate words put together about L'arc En Ciel. They were never even close to breaking up, for the band members just went to do their solo projects. The Smile Album did really well, and was a new sound compared to their earlier albums. L'arc released an album called awake a year later, a single called link after that, a new single this year called seventh heaven, and are planning on releasing a new album soon.
The only L'arc en Ciel moment that looked bad was after the album "True", when the drummer got busted for heroine possessson. The drummer left the band, L'arc was in the shadowed for awhile and then they got a new drummer and released the album heart in 1998, which was followed by a double release with the album ray and ark being released at the same time. The album released in 2000 was Real which did really well.

This album smile as listed above was the start if a new sound L'arc En Ciel created for themselves after being on their Solo albums for a few years.

5 out of 5 stars When you get this album..."Smile"!.......2007-06-10

This is one of the best L'arc en ciel cd's I've ever heard. Some of them are aggresive and some are soft and melodic. Let me give you my opinions on each track.

1. Kiss-Kuchizuke (4:24) (5 stars): Pretty awesome song. I like how the solo of the guitar goes. Kinda hard and in some ways touching at the same time. Great for a background or ending song of an anime show.

2. READY STEADY GO (3:45) (5 stars): This is one of the opening theme song of an anime show, Fullmetal Alchemist. It's fast and aggresive that it makes you wanna listen to it again!

3. Lover Boy (4:45) (5 stars): Ken sang on this track. He's pretty good actually. I like how the bass guitar sounds when all of the instruments went silent. Great background music for an anime show.

4. Feeling Fine (4:16) (5 stars): I love Hyde's voice. The electric guitars are rockin' in this track! It's kinda melodic and fast at the same time. Great ending theme song for an anime show.

5. Time Goes On (4:41) (5 stars): Pretty slow and melodic at the same time. I love Hyde's high pitch voice somewhere in the middle of the song. The solo is totally great. Great for background or ending theme song of an anime show.

6. Coming Closer (5:14) (10 stars!): Now this is what I call hard rock! Hyde is very fluent in his english here. The solo is totally great! I love how the electric guitar sounds at the beginning of the song. Great for an intensive battle in an anime show!

7. Forever-Eien (4:39) (5 stars): Somehow, this is kinda aggresive and slow at the same time. The solo is not really that bad though it kinda sounds out of tune a bit. Hyde's voice sounds so emotional here. Maybe good for an ending song in an anime show.

8. REVELATION (3:18) (5 stars): This is pretty hard rock. The electric guitar tunes kinda sound the same in track 6. I like how the guitar goes at the end of the song. Maybe great for an intensive battle in an anime show.

9. Living In Your Eyes-Hitomi No Jyunin (5:55) (10 stars!): This is very melodic and emotional at the same time. You'll love the piano sounds in this track. The solo is so great. I love Hyde's voice and I feel I want to listen to this track all over again. You'll never get tired of it. Great background music for an anime show.

10. Spirit Dreams Inside (3:43) (5 stars): Nothing much to say, but I'm very proud of Hyde. This track is sung in english. If I can remember, this is an ending song for a Final Fantasy movie. I forgot what is called, but I'm sure you'll like it.

11. BONUS TRACK: READY STEADY GO (Hydeless version) (3:46) (5 stars): In this track, you'll be able to hear the guitars, basses, and the drums more. Including some other instruments. I always wonder who's that person who sang the line, "Ready steady can't hold me back. "Ready steady give me good luck. "Ready steady never look back. Let's get started Ready steady go!", in the beginning of the song? Great for a background music in anime show!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely addicting L'arc~en~Ciel album.......2007-06-03

This CD is one most will probably get because of the second track--"READY STEADY GO," which was featured as Fullmetal Alchemist's theme song. However, the CD has even more (and even better) tracks that are highly listenable to even my anti-Jrock sister. "Feeling Fine" is lively and upbeat, starting off with an awesome drum riff; "Coming Closer" is desperate and epic; and "Hitomi no Junin" is by far one of the most beautiful L'arc~en~Ciel songs ever. I have most every album of theirs, and this is *probably* my favorite (albeit their most formulaic...). Even if you aren't into Jrock, give this a chance. It's a good piece to listen to on a day that calls for ENERGY!!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite CDs.......2007-01-29

Some people may call this CD overrated simply because the second track is the opening to the anime series Fullmetal Alchemist, but there are many other songs on here that surpass "Ready Steady Go" and make this CD worth its money.

"Kuchizuke", for example, starts off the CD with Hyde's lower, grittier voice (attributed to his smoking habit) and sets the bar in terms of variety - whether it be vocals, guitar, or subject matter. Another favorite of mine is track eight, "Revelation", which immediately attracted my attention when I first listened to this CD because of the introduction (strong guitar chords followed by an underlying techno-ish beat). About half of the songs are more rock, and there are also rock ballads, such as Hitomi no Jyunin (Living in Your Eyes). There are even a couple of songs that sound, for lack of a better word, peppy. "Ready Steady Go" is one, with bright guitar chords and a catchy beat, and "Feeling Fine" is another.

Overall, I greatly enjoyed this CD and it's already become one of my favorites. Even the inside cover made me smile - pictures of the band wearing boxes on their heads with the trademark "smile" on the front cover. Smile is a must-have for any Laruku fan.

5 out of 5 stars Band from Fullmetal Alchemist Rocks off the Screen.......2006-11-25

L'arc en Ciel (Rainbow) did several songs for the Fullmetal Alchemist series and movie, including: "Link", "Lost Heaven", "Ready, Steady, Go!" and "Promised Land". Which are excellent songs and are what made me go and buy this album. I wasn't entirely sure if the band would be as good as they were when they made the music for Fullmetal Alchemist, so, I listened to the album with a anxiety, but my doubts were null and void, so, far, I like the outside music. It has a nice soothing undertone, and some electric guitar solos too. The song "Lover Boy" has some harsh sounds to it, but it softens later in the song. And "Feeling Fine" has a great smooth guitar throughout the piece. All the songs vary from hard rock to being gentle, it's well balanced. It's also a good CD to listen to while riding in the car, it has some fast paced songs if you want to tap your feet to it as you drive. For my first album of L'arc en Ciel, I loved it!

The CD includes the words to the songs on the inside packet, with the lyrics in Japanese and English. And some pretty funny pictures of the band wearing boxes like the one on the front of the album on their heads. (If you don't like the music, that part will at least make you laugh).

The Songs Are:

1.Kiss- Kuchizuke

2. Ready, Steady, Go!

3. Lover Boy

4. Feeling Fine

5. Time Goes On: A Soft and relaxing song to listen to, it's good a good rock song, but not loud.

6. Coming Closer

7. Forever-Eien- Also a soft song, even a little more so than some of the others.

8. Revelation- A fast paced song with a catchy beat

9. Living in Your Eyes- Hitomi no Jyunin- Gentle and somewhat magical tune, like Spirit Dreams Inside.

10. Spirit Dreams Inside- My personal favorite, the entire song is in English, but the vocals and entire song is well crafted.

11. Ready, Steady, Go! (Mostly instrumental Version)

So, if you liked the music from Fullmetal Alchemist, and the song "Ready Steady Go!" or the opening and closing themes from the movie, stop sitting on the fence and buy this CD! You will not regret it!

Excellent Album!

4 out of 5 stars Wish I got this sooner.......2007-04-25

First of all I am not a child! I am a TEENAGER. Huge difference! And second of all I wish I got this CD sooner.

The first time listening to the entire album, I only enjoyed a few of the songs, and found the rest a bit blah. However, second aand third time around was when I really started to appretiate the songs and its genre. I am a huge fan of Gackt and am used to Jpop more than Jrock, and it was my friend who recommended this album to me. I was disapointed at first but grew to love it. I'm listening to it right now.

It starts off with 'New World', which has become my second favorite. It has a very nice, fast sound to it and the sceaming factor is just right. Very fun to dance and listen to. It's the song I most listen to.

'Lost Heaven' has a retro feel to it in the beginning but neither the less, is a pretty decent song saved by Hyde's attempts of singing in english.

'Poem' is slightly balladish, and has a soft rock sound to it. What bugs me is the slightly forced and constant transition from soft to harsh.

'Trust' is my fourth favorite one, because Hyde's deep voice does a fantastic job and gives a very romantic, soft sound to it. It's one of those songs that makes people sway there arms in enjoyment.

'Killing Me' has a nice sound to it but lacks a lovable rythm in the beginning. Hyde's voice transforms from high to low in a matter of seconds. 1/3 into it is where it gets interesting when it is sung fast and high but is quite an enjoyable song.

'As One' is probably my least favorite, because it's mostly in english and Hyde's english is BARELY understandable in this song. It's one of those songs for a human turning into a mutant.

'My Dear' is a very nice, slow, soft song and nicely switches moods and emotions throughout the song and keeps it very romantic.

'Existence' is a very interesting song. It's opening beat is very cool and only gets better as it goes on (up until one point which I will tell you). It's slightly difficult to understand what this song is supossed to be about. half way in, is the very wierd part. It is sung in english by some scary sounding lady and is slightly frightening if you understand what she's saying.

'Jiyuu eno shoutai' is my 3rd favorite song. It is fast, has a very lovable rythm and is very fun to listen to many times.

'Ophelia' is definately my favorite song out of the 12. It has a VERY different sound to it though. It in no way fits the genre. One reason to why I love this song so much is Hyde's amazing voice when he sings in english. The song is so romantic and well paced, and it transitions very well. As I said Hyde's voice is so amazing, deep and so romantic, and this was the song that made me fall in love with it.

'Hoshizora' is a softer rock song, and one really good thing about it is the audible esixtence of building up emotions more and more until it breaks out to a soft scream.

'Twinkle, Twinkle' is also pretty soft but pretty much stays that way throughout the whole thing.

-'Ame Shizuka'

5 out of 5 stars Be "Awake"! L'Arc en Ciel is here!! Rock on!!.......2007-01-22

This album is really great!! Better than their Smile album. It has some songs that's great for ending or beginning theme songs for anime shows. And some songs that's great for background music for anime shows. Now let me rate each track for you and give my own opinions about it.

1. NEW WORLD/4:06 (5 stars)- This song is great! Very fast and makes you wanna listen to it all over again! This is great for a beginning theme song for an anime show.

2. LOST HEAVEN/4:36 (5 stars)- I like this! This song is pretty fast too, but more melodic like. This is the ending theme song for one of the movies of Fullmetal Alchemist. I forgot what it's called. Oh well! Is still cool though.

3. POEM-JOJOUSHI/5:10 (5 stars)- Hyde's voice is very cool and smooth on this track. This song is kinda smooth and a little bit romantic, you know? This is good for a background music for an anime show. Or ending music. My most favorite line of the song is "The love to you is alive in me wo-everyday for love. You are aside of me wo-everyday."

4. TRUST/4:29 (5 stars)- I like it how Hyde's voice echoed at the beginning of the song. This song is pretty melodic and smooth too. I think it's great for a background music for an anime show.

5. KILLING ME/4:01 (10 stars! This is beyond my maximum rate, which is 5 stars)- I never get tired listening to this song! This is one of my most favorite songs. This song is kinda like pop, punk rock for me. Great for a beginning theme song for an anime show. This is so great!! Take my opinion, you'll never ever get tired of it!

6. AS ONE/3:44 (10 stars again!)- Now this is great for a background music for an anime show. This is song is kinda hard rock. I love hard rock songs. It creates intense battles on my mind. I like it how Hyde shouts somewhere like almost at the end of the song. I've never heard him shout like that before. And he's really fluent saying those english words. I'm so proud of him.

7. MY DEAR/5:09 (5 stars)- This song is like soft or smooth. I like it how Hyde sings at the very end when all instruments went silent. Makes me wanna listen to it again. This is great for an ending theme song for an anime show.

8. EXISTENCE/4:08 (5 stars)- This is pretty fast and kinda like hard, punk rock. I like the line "Take away. Their existence. Take away. Their insistence." This is pretty good for a background music for an anime song.

9. INVITATION TO FREEDOM-JIYUU ENO SHOUTAI/3:59 (10 stars)- This is so great!! Very fast and kinda like pop rock. The beat is very good. I just never get tired of listening to this song. Hyde's voice is very high like at the beginning of the chorus. This is really, really great for an ending theme song for an anime show. I just wish that Hyde would teach me how to sing like that. Now that's gonna be cool!

10. OPHELIA/5:09 (4.5 stars)- Well...just to tell you, this song is kinda like jazz rock (if there's a jazz rock anywhere) and I don't really like it. The piano and everything makes me feel like I wanna sleep. When I listen to this song, I didn't really enjoy it, but a little bit. This can be a background or an ending theme song for an anime show. Hey, for the ones who likes this song, didn't really mean to hurt your feelings. Just stateing my own opinions. But if you really, really like this song, I respect that. I like it too...maybe just a little.

11. STARS-HOSHIZORA/5:36 (5 stars)- This song is cool. This is good for an ending theme song for an anime show. Its kinda like soft, melodic rock. I like it how Hyde sings at the chorus part. His voice is so high. Again, I wish he could teach me how to sing.

12. TWINKLE, TWINKLE/5:12 (6 stars)- The music intro at the beginning is great. Makes me feel a wanna play it too. Again, this is great for an ending theme song for an anime show. My most favorite part of the song is the chorus. Can't really hear Ken (guitarist) singing. I can only hear him at the beginning of the song. Oh well, good job Ken!

13. HEAVEN'S DRIVE (LIVE AT YOYOGI NATIONAL STADIUM JUNE 26, 2004) US ONLY BONUS TRACK (10 stars)- I really love the chorus part! Is like all band members of L'Arc en Ciel is singing. This is great when like an anime band of an anime show is singing this. Like L'Arc en Ciel became like anime characters. L'Arc en ciel must be very popular at Japan. Hopefully, L'Arc en Ciel will be popular in America and everywhere else in the whole wide world. Hopefully, they will be considered as the #1 most popular japanese band in the world!

5 out of 5 stars And I thought Smile rocked, WOW!!!.......2007-01-15

This is my second/third L'arc en Ciel album. I first bought smile and loved it. Smile had songs from the Fullmetal Alchemist series and this album has even more. I also bought it with "Promised Land/Link". Both of them together have "Link" and "Lost" Heaven" from the Fullmetal Alchemist movie. And then they have about three different versions of the song "Promised Land" both with/without lyrics.

I like the "My Dear" song on this one, too. It has a soothing song and the english blends well. It also includes a live song from a live performance called "Heaven's Drive" it sounds a bit rough, but the chorus has a cool echoe effect. And Existance sounds like the song "Revelation" from "Smile". Most of the songs are soft rock and have a magical touch to them. "New World" is a song that has appeared on Youtube a few times and used in Fullmetal Alchemist clips. It has a cool sound and besides "Lost Heaven" is my favorite song on the entire CD. Hyde's voice sounds hits some pretty good notes in the english and I love the song's tone.

I usually think of L'arc en Ciel as sounding a bit like U2 at times, but it's so much better, it's got a huge twist and has cool sound bites and guitar solos.

This is a great follow up album if you just bought Smile and are wondering what to buy next. L'arc en Ciel is my favorite J-Rock band besides Asian Kung Fu Generation.

Again, if you like the opening and Closing songs from Fullmetal Alchemist, buy this album and/or Promised Land/Link.

You won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars This should awaken you L'Arc en Ciel.......2006-08-29

This has to be one of the most listenable albums, I have heard in some time. Track 06 is outstanding!
I have a few L'Arc en Ciel albums, and Awake has to be one of their best. It is at the top of play list. And as I am a Hyde fan this album really lets you hear Hyde in full range.

5 out of 5 stars Great JRock Band!.......2006-02-18

L'arc-en-ciel is a really great band, every album they've released is just great. The new album "Awake" is awesome! I like every song on the album, "As One", is kind of heavy, it starts with the guitars and so on, it's great! My favorite songs on "Awake" are "Poem", "New World", "As One", "My Dear", and "Ophelia". I like every song on the album, but those are my favorites. L'arc-en-ciel kicks ass!!!!!

This is a fine Handel compilation that provides a nice overview of his orchestral music with brass instruments, as well as his only incidental score (music written to accompany the action of a play). Christopher Hogwood uses the arrangement that Handel made of the Fireworks Music for normal-sized forces, including strings, which were absent from the original. All the music is played with a fine sense of style, and a goodly bit of the "pomp and circumstance" that Handel above all others knew how to capture in music. At two discs for the price of one, this is an extremely good deal. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars Water Music is so soothing..........2007-01-11

I love this album. Too often when I've tried classical albums the music has not been soothing, but this is very relaxing. If you are looking for great music to relax by or listen to in the car, this is it.

5 out of 5 stars A Noble Performance.......2006-03-11

I have listened to numerous renditions by different performing artists, for several years, of both Water Music and Music for the Royal Fireworks. The first time I listened to this CD played by the Academy of Ancient Music I felt I was listening to a high class performance. There is something about the clear sound of the instruments and the tempo and dedication to detail that this group of artists put into its performance that it really inspires me into the wonderful world of the baroque classical music and somehow it transports me to the time when Handel himself was composing and directing these beautiful masterpieces. And the bonus is also the beautifully played Duo A Cori concertos. I recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars Towards the higher end of the pack.......2004-03-11

Reading the liner notes, I am reminded that the occasion for which the water music originally was composed was royal river outing that started in the evening and lasted until 4:00 AM (Take THAT you modern clubhoppers!). The music was played three times through the course of this trip. I doubt there were many teetotallers. Soo...royal oarsmen, wine goblets overflowing with the best claret, tipsy nobleman and...hey! don't hit that river barge! Watch where you're goin' mate!

As such, I'd expect a little roughness in performances (especially for the 3:30 AM gig). Ill-tuned horns and all, I think Hogwood delivers about as faithful a rendition as is currently available. There are certainly more "refined" versions of the water music. I think these better resemble the follow-on peformances for the genteel, perfumed ladies seeking money for the foundling hospital. That's the beauty of Orpheus and Pinnock versions.

Hogwood gets 4 stars for getting close to the river ride. I will admit that my view has been biased by the fabulous 1976 rendition by Jean-Claude Malgoire which hasn't been bettered in this respect. No English band can shake a stick next to drunken French horn players. But Hogwood is a good near-term substitute until Sony wakes up and dips further into their vaults.
Additionally, the Fireworks music is fabulous; the due cori very nice, with similar touches of earthiness. All in all a good outing, and for decent prices.

3 out of 5 stars Recommendable........2004-02-19

I have recently returned to these two CDs (which I bought and listened to for a while some three years ago) and found that they were not quite as bad as I remembered. The tempi are very well sprung, the spirits are high and the "Water Music" in particular is played with some delicacy and finesse (which I hardly take for granted from Hogwood's early recordings). The roughness of the result is mainly due the scratchy tone of the strings and inaccurate tuning of the horns.
If you are a period-instrument enthusiast this Double-Decca, because of its low "duo" price, could have some edge against such strong competitors (which I haven't listened to) as Pinnock, Gardiner and Savall. And at the same "duo" price you can get also Hogwood's wonderful performances (with the Handel&Haydn Society) of Handel's Concerti Grossi Op.6. However, if you care more for variety of dynamics and lightness of touch than for period-instrument sound, I recommend you instead to get all the twelve op.6 Concerti AND the "Water Music" AND the "Musick for the Royal Fireworks" (but not the "Alchymist" suite, the "Concerti a due cori" and the two "Arias for Wind Band") at "trio" price in superlative, "historically-correct" and mellower sounding performances by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo Mr. Handel.......2003-02-20

A Great Master's Mastery, Masterly Mastered by a Master!!
Translation?? In any speak, this is classic Handel, played at it's best, by the one who should know!!!

Hogwood's genious as a foremost expert on my personal favourite composer, can never be overestimated, and here, presented in a medium of works we all know and can relate to, are a showcase of his awesome skills and brand of 'Mastery'!!

One feels obliged to pay homage to composer and conductor alike, for without either, we could not see the creation of this CD, in what is a pinnacle of art and high standard in performance.

Accordingly, Bravo Mr. Handel, and many many congratulations to Mr Hogwood and all the performers.

15. Life is Like a Boat ~From the Anime TV Series BLEACH~ -Rie fu

And there you have it. Many of the series haven't even been released in the US, and we're already getting opening and ending theme releases like this.

My personal favorite is Lost Heaven from L'Arc~en~ciel, because it says so much about Fullmetal Alchemist and its theme with the lyrics of "We say goodbye lost heaven, how we longed for heaven. We're letting go, of something we never had, time goes so fast, heaven is lost...". Second favorite would be Life is Like a Boat from Rie fu. It's got a really laidback feel to it, and questions worth and other things.
*Asterisk is a rap song, that's really good. I usually dislike rap, but I don't mind this one. It also may be interesting to note that it was the top selling Anime theme song single in 2005. BLEACH fans are really lucky with this CD, since there's 3 themes from BLEACH. D-tecnoLIFE, Life is Like a Boat, and *Asterisk.
Hey My Friend is a rock song that has a really laid back feel as well, and it really gives more meaning to the movie Kamikaze Girls and its plotline when it says things like "I lose my way without you", and "Hello my friend". Tommy heavenly6 has put together a great song with this one.
Dramatic is a pop song, with really high vocals from the vocalist of Judy and Mary. YUKI also sang Sobakasu(Freckles) in J-pop CD1, so if you picked that one up as well, you should recognize her vocals. Dramatic manages to be really peppy, without being annoying and screechy. Honey and Clover hasn't seen a US release yet either, so this is somewhat unusual, but it definately works for me.
Houkigumo is a softer song, with lots of melody and harmony. It's got a lot of melody and soft guitars. The vocalist is also really sweet sounding, and harmonious. Yakitate!! Japan's anime hasn't seen a US release, but the manga releases in fall of 2006.
Hit in the USA is another rock tune, with an odd kind of drive behind it. With lyrics all in English, and the theme of "I was made to hit in America!", it's very bouncy and repetitive.
Days is a good song, with a solid beat behind it. It's the opening to Eureka 7, which is getting a US release very soon. Days has good vocals as well, that support the beat and song.
Pureness is from the same artist that sang Kesenai Tsumi(Unerasable Sin), Kitade Nana. Pureness isn't as good as Kesenai Tsumi in my opinion, but it's still got a good guitar riff going, and she still sings well. BEET the Vandel Buster hasn't gotten an anime US release yet either.
Riraito(Rewrite) is the final ending theme to Fullmetal Alchemist. Asian Kung-Fu Generation just put out a new album(Solfa) recently, so you can check out more of their music domestically as well. Riraito is a really good rock song with good vocalists and lyrics. It's also the only opening theme to only be played when it was supposed to be played, and most of the time, in full. Ready Steady Go was only supposed to be played with Tobira no Mukou e, but adult swim had a business deal going on, so it got played all throughout the series of Fullmetal Alchemist until the final set of episodes.

And now for the actual packaging... The actual packaging itself is really chibi and cute. The booklet has lyrics, but no translations, so you'll have to search around online for those. It has a visual spread of some album covers, and the artists themselves. There's also a page and a half text piece outlining the stuff on the CD, and giving a talk about anime and J-pop in the US.

Altogether, it's a good deal for anime fans, and people who would rather buy domestically than importing everything. All of the artists included and the songs themselves are good solid songs that aren't your standard music fare.

3 out of 5 stars Representative.......2005-11-02

In a land where fads come and go with lightning speed, where consumer electronics are always years ahead of us in the USA, and where even the language changes faster than most, it seems incongruous that the pop music doesn't change. I lived in Japan 15 years ago, thus surrounded by J-Pop music. This CD represents the latest of the genre, yet it doesn't sound any different from what J-Pop sounded like 15 years ago, with exceptions in a few songs of some noticeable new developments.

There is a reason J-Pop has never caught on in the USA and Europe. The music is terribly overproduced, which gives it a kind of show-tunes sound. Even the rock music has that annoying overproduced sound, nerding up what would otherwise be some killer rock music.

But J-Pop's not being known in the USA is in the process of changing, due to the popularity of manga and anime. With so many people now enjoying anime, the Japanese style of adult cartoons (mostly action and fantasy cartoons), and hearing the theme songs of these TV shows and movies, at least a subculture of Americans is developing a taste for this music. Hence the release of this album, a showcase of J-Pop tunes that are used in anime.

In J-Pop, I strongly prefer songs fronted by female vocals to that of the male vocals. This is true for me in American & European music, too, as most of my favorite groups have female lead singers (Viva Voce, Bon Voyage, Cocteau Twins, Curve, Evanescence, The Randies, The Go-Go's, etc.). But this is even more true for me in Japanese music; the male vocals have a certain tonal quality that I especially don't care for. Some people may find the high-pitched tone of the typical J-Pop female singer to be annoying, but I enjoy it.

The first three songs on this compilation didn't do much for me, but the fourth one I was immediately crazy about. I later looked at the cover and learned that it was Puffy Amiyumi. I had already heard of this duo and wanted music by them; now I've heard them for the first time and I definitely want some of their albums!

New influences in J-Pop are found in the track "Pride" by High and Mighty Color. This is primarily a typical female-led J-Pop overproduced pop tune, but interspersed in it is an intense rock section with some scream-rap (made unintelligible by sound alteration). "*~Asterisk~" by Orange Range has some rapping in it, something else I don't remember hearing in J-Pop 15 years ago. But aside from these two tracks, I don't really hear anything new in J-Pop. Amazing how it doesn't change.

I give this album 3 stars, which in my book is a good album that I would definitely recommend to others. This album is a good representation of J-Pop music. If you're an anime fan, you're likely to enjoy it. If you want to learn what Japanese pop music is like, this compilation is a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars you have to buy this it is amazing.......2007-01-26

Being a fan of the anime FullMetal Alchemist I know all the songs and had to get it. it is amazing if you like the opening and ending songs from FullMetal Alchemist then this is a must have. i promise you will injoy it.

4 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2007-01-20

I am a big fan of Fullmetal Alchemist. I own all the volumes of the manga that have been released in the US, I watched the whole TV show (on DVD, so I heard all eight opening and ending songs), and I even saw the movie. After watching the textless openings (and some of the endings) too many times to count, I figured that I should probably buy the CD. I expected that the CD would be the opening and ending songs. Unfortunately, I was wrong.

The CD contains the FULL-LENGTH versions of songs that were cut down to 1:30 for the TV show. If, like me, you are only familiar with the shortened songs from the anime, you will be in for a big surprise.

The songs are 3:47 to 4:49 in length. Most of the songs are basically the same, only with two to four repeats of the verse/chorus. A few of the songs, however, have totally new material in them.

"Melissa" (first season opening) is basically the same, with three verses (although, one is almost entirely instrumental) and more vamping (playing the same chords over and over and over and over...) between the verses. (4:35)

"Indelible Sin" (first season ending) has three verses and a very short bridge. However, it seems to go on forever. The song is still good, but it probably could have been cut down to two verses instead of three. (4:15)

"Ready Steady Go!" (second season opening) has three verses and a short guitar solo in the middle. The song is as good as, if not better than, the version in the anime. (3:48)

"The Other Side of the Door" (second season ending) has four verses and a bridge (which is actually about as long as the verse, unlike the bridges in some of the other songs). In my opinion, the version on the CD is superior to the version in the anime. (4:49)

"Undo" (third season opening) has four verses and one bridge (with weird chanting people and electric guitar). The song in the TV show is one of my favorites, but the song on the CD sounds as though the band had just gotten a new synthesizer and wanted to try every instrument. Instruments include not only drums, bass, and electric guitar, but also weird synthesizer sound effects, organ, maracas, and...was that a cowbell? (4:01)

"Motherland" (third season ending) has four verses and no bridge. That means you get to listen to the same thing...four times. That's great, if you liked the original song. Since it was never one of my favorites, I would compare listening to the extended version to being subjected to Chinese water torture (I know there's a repeat coming; it's going to be soon; IT'S COMING...nooooo!). (4:30)

"Rewrite" (fourth season opening), which is my favorite song from the anime, has two verses, two renditions of the chorus, a short instrumental, and a bridge. I like the whole song...except for the bridge. Call me weird, but when they start chanting "Hup, hup, hup, hup!" I feel like screaming. In fact, the whole bridge is very strange (I'm not sure if the noise in the background is supposed to be the wind howling or a toilet flushing) and it's written in a completely different style from the rest of the song. After listening to the song fifty or sixty times (this is not an exaggeration; I really have listened to it that many times), the bridge has gotten a bit more tolerable, but it's still very strange. (3:47)

"I Will" (fourth season ending) has three verses and no bridge. It suffers from the same problem as "Motherland"; you get to listen to the same thing...three times... (4:14)

The CD does not have any of the beautiful incidental music from the show or the opening and ending songs from the movie. You can only get the CD with the incidental music as an import, which is more expensive. The music from the movie is on a completely different CD called Fullmetal Alchemist: The Conqueror of Shamballa Soundtrack. It's a shame that a CD with the music from all four seasons is not available.

The CD does come with a lyric booklet. The lyrics are written in roomaji (aka roumaji, romaji, or rômaji; it's Japanese written out in Roman characters), but all the words are run together. This makes the lyrics very hard to read.

The CD also comes with a DVD of the music video for Nana Kitade's "Indelible Sin". While I can see why they packaged it together with the CD ("Indelible Sin" is the first ending song from the anime), the music video has absolutely nothing to do with Fullmetal Alchemist. The music video is very strange (the kind of strangeness usually attributed to consumption of many, many alcoholic beverages). Scenes of Ms. Kitade as a singing head that is slowly attached to a body are intercut with roses (with eyeballs in the middle!), freakish masks, bubbles, and mannequin arms, legs, and torsos (all naked and anatomically correct, of course). Once Ms. Kitade is put together, she proceeds to flail about a bit, while the camera gets far too close (I was waiting for it to go up her nose or something). That's the whole video.

Is 34:02 of music worth $17.98? I'm still not sure. I personally like the CD (sure beats watching the textless songs), but you may not want to buy it. If you understand that these are NOT the 1:30 theme songs from the anime, and you still want the CD, by all means, buy it. However, if you want the 1:30 theme songs, the incidental music, or the music from the movie, this is probably not the CD for you.

3 out of 5 stars Equivalent Exchange?.......2006-10-02

"COMPLETE BEST" is a bit of an awkward title for this collection. Yes, it is "complete" in that this CD compiles the eight songs that opened and closed the credit segments of the anime TV series, but titling it "best" is a bit superfluous, since these are the ONLY songs to bookend the episodes. None of the fine instrumental music heard throughout the series is included here.

If you've watched the series on DVD then you should already be familiar with each of these songs but, if you're like me, and followed the show as it aired in the US on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim (which only used two of the opening themes), then some of the music will be new to you. Your enjoyment of this CD will rest heavily on your tolerance for commercialized pop music, which for me, can be a bit of a challenge.

The CD is sequenced so that opening and closing themes alternate. This was a wise choice, as the opening songs tend to be up-tempo rockers sung by men, the closing numbers being mostly sweet or melancholic songs sung by women, and switching between the two in the linear fashion of playing the disc in track order helps to highlight the differences between them.

Of the four opening-credit songs L'Arc-En-Ciel's "Ready, Steady, Go!" and Asian Kung-Fu Generation's "Rewrite" packs the most punch (it didn't hurt that both were accompanied by well-crafted animated sequences). In this catergory Porno Graffitti's "Melissa" sounds out of step not just within the soundtrack, but the series in general, taking a sunny upbeat tone that clashed with some of the earlier episodes' darker themes that it shared (the "Mother" and "Night of the Chimeras Cry" episodes comes to mind).

The closing-credit songs served well as reflective meditations on whatever misfortunes the protagonists faced by episode's end. I don't play these as often, but Yellow Generation's "To The Other Side Of The Door" is, I think, the strongest in this category.

The cover of the booklet is the only place where artwork of the characters is featured. The interior contains the lyrics to each track (in Japanese only) and postage stamp-sized photos of each band/artist. A bonus DVD is included with a video of Nana Kitade's "Indelible Sin", but it's accompanying visuals has only vague themes that tie it to the series (and no FULLMETAL animation). The running time for the music disc clocks barely over 34 minutes, so I suspect the DVD was tossed in to justify a full CD's sticker price, making the whole package seem unnecessarily padded.

Final Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars (based on my enjoyment of the music alone)

5 out of 5 stars Good happy music.......2006-08-24

Fullmetal Alchemist has some of the best incidental music in the business, alternating between moody, spunky, and tragic as needed without getting stale. The songs used in the credits are of equal quality. Melissa and Ready Steady Go are two of my favorites; they have bright guitar crunches and good hooks for listening. You don't forget one of these songs after it's been played, is my point. This CD is the best workout music I've had in a while, although I'd mix it with the Bleach soundtrack and some Naruto to make a really good anime exercise CD.

5 out of 5 stars Bonus DVD not mentioned.......2006-06-01

This CD also contains a Region 1 Bonus DVD featuring the music video for "Indelible Sin" by Nana Kitade!

    5 out of 5 stars A very sensual CD.......2003-04-06

Aurah is a really good CD. What i like about it the most is that it combines a mystical feeling with sensuality. It feels like red velvet and silk. I used it as background music for a workshop on creating relationships and it switched everybody into this delightfully sensual mood. The music is exotic, light and beautiful and stands out amongts the many "new Age" type Cds that suggest mysticism with poor music quality. Lots of quality here. I have put it aside in my special music box.

5 out of 5 stars Finally Something Amazing!.......2000-09-26

I've been looking for songwriters to incorporate filmscoring ideas into their songs. THIS IS THE ONE! This music calles for dreamers and musiclovers! Amazing music - you must have it in your catalog!

4 out of 5 stars The man behind the music.......2006-12-12

yep, Alchemist picked up where Havoc left off, recreated the mobb sound, got QB on fire with street anthems all year long, so he had to make it official with one of the best release of 2004.
"Hold you down", the single for the album is reminiscent of Primo circa early nineties, with the soulfoul sample, scratched shoot outs and the strings playing in the back, it all blends together, without taking over the lyrics, only in NY.
There's so much goodies on this one, and the collabos with the Mobb and D-Block on "D-Block to QB", B Real on "Bang Out", Nas on "Tick Tock", and that unadulterated wailing on "It's a craze", it's a lot of heat, not one filler, if you're familiar with QB artists, Mobb Deep, Cormega, AZ, Nas, matter of fact, if you're familiar with the NY sound, you will love it.
Alchemist is the white son Primo never had. Let the Neptunes and Kanye West rule MTV, The Alchemist rules NY streets.

This record is somewhere between a 3 and a 4 rating. The beats made by Al are outstanding, and on other albums would make superb hits, however some of the artists featured here destroy them. Lyrically, this album is average at best. The beats make this album what it is and are far better than almost any other hip-hop album around, yet they are almost damaged by the lyricists featured.

    top tracks:
    1-dead bodies (f. game & prodigy)
    2-the essence (f. the l.o.x.)
    3-it's a craze (f. mobb deep)
    4-for the record
5-hold u down (f. nina sky, prodigy & illa ghee)

The Alchemist is well known on the underground scene, but wasn't well known by the average Joe 'til this album came out. The only single off the album, "Hold You Down" with Prodigy of Mobb Deep did decent. This opened up people to the ALC. This album is a good example of why folks should've paid respect to The Alchemist much earlier. Of course, the album has it's flaws though. There are a number of artists that appear on the album, but a lot of them just get repetitive. I like Prodigy and Sheek Louch's music, but I felt like there was no need to put them on more than one track, considering it was a mixtape of sorts. I also felt like there could've been some different styles of production. However, this album is still great. I enjoyed what the artists brought to the album, and 'Our boy Al' did a good job on production. You won't be dissappointed with spending your money on this album. Best tracks are:
    1)"The Essence"-The LOX
    2 "Tick Tock"-NaS, and Prodigy
    3 "Bangers"-Lloyd Banks

    4 out of 5 stars reppin ALC!!!.......2005-09-12

It been almost a year since Alchemist's debut album/compilation was released but I still listen to it like its brand new!! Alchemist has been one of my favorite producers since I 1st heard his music on Mobb Deeps Murda Muzik album back in 1999. He has produced at least 1 song on Mobb Deeps albums since then as well as tracks for M.O.P., Pharoahe Monch, Dilated Peoples, Cypress Hill, Defari, Jadakiss, Nas, Cormega, CNN, Ras Kass, Royce Da 5'9'', Styles, D12 Snoop Dogg and others. This album is great and is everything I expected. 1st off, the lead single "hold you down" samples the same song as Jay-Z's "soon you'll understand", to me its not a rip off. It happens in rap all the time, 2 people sample the same song. To me a rip off is when Puff Daddy jacks "i got 5 on it" for some gay song he made with r.kelly. Anyways back to ALC, some of the guests suprised me like Devin the dude and TI. The songs with them came out with good results. Mobb Deep, Lox and Dilated Peoples I expected, they should be a given when it comes to ALC. Overall this cd is banging and the best song on here is "Different Worlds" w/ Twin of Infamous Mobb. ALC and Twin go back and forth about coming up from different lives to come together and make music. ALc isnt that bad on the mic but hes only on 2 songs, "hold you down" and "different worlds". Mobb Deep, TheLox, and their respective crews are plastered all over this album. Other guests include Game, B-Real, Lloyd Banks, & Stat Quo.
