Cool!.......2004-07-10
My favs were the Lion Triumphant and the 3 Essays - both I thought were full of energy and had a lot to say that I hadn't heard before.
Darn Good!.......2004-05-24
I'm not much of a devotee to 'new' music - my tastes kind of went out after Sinatra, but I am really intrigued by this collection.
My question is ... why don't orchestras play this kind of stuff? I take my wife and the kids who will let me to the symphony several times a year and most of the 'new' music I've heard has been so boring that it nearly drove me and my family mad.
If they could find enough interesting 'new' stuff to devote an entire series of recordings to, why can't symphony orchestras find the same quality of stuff?
Perhaps they ought to call the folks at ERM.
I'm gonna definately go with number three when it comes out.
Very strong sampling of new works.......2004-05-13
Of note are Nancy Bloomer Deussen's attractive "Peninsula Suite" and Thomas L. Read's vibrant and exciting "On October Ground." John Winsor's "Three Essays" is the most substantial work on the disc and continues Winsor's ongoing obsessions with classical structures filled with modern harmonies.
Highly recommended.
