ILHAN MIMAROGLU OUTSTANDING WARRANTS ELECTRONIC COMPOSITIONS PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED THE SOUTHPORT COMPOSERS SERIES S-SSD 0086

“Here ends that unfinished something…” ILHAN MIMAROGLU

The Southport Composers Series continues with the release of Ilhan Mimaroglu’s “Outstanding Warrants-Electronic Compositions Previously Unreleased.” Born in Istanbul, Turkey in 1926, the son of the eminent architect, Kemalettin, Mimaroglu has embraced the legacy of “Tape Music” since the early 50’s.

After establishing a reputation in Turkey as writer and broadcaster on music, Mimaroglu came to New York City by way of the Rockefeller Foundation and studies at Columbia University under Paul Henry Lang and Douglas Moore. Another visit to New York found Mimaroglu at Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center working with his mentor, Vladimir Ussachevsky. The recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in the early 70’s in music composition, Mimaroglu is a mirror of electronic and tape composition within the last half of this century.

Track 2, Prelude No. 17 depicts “Istanbul Fog”, after two visits to Turkey within a time span of 30 years. Low register earth sounds, bells and the essence of Istanbul on a summer night offer traces of Bernard Herrmann, Jacob Druckman and Edgar Varese (Ilhan has worked with Varese and Stefan Wolpe in the past). Track 14, The Last Largo, is Mimaroglu’s final composition from his Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center association, quoting Mimaroglu, “I couldn’t work there any longer as smoking was prohibited in all areas of the building.” The water-bell like sounds spool in anxious coils. It was after this composition that CPEMC replaced its original electronic analog sound creation tools with one-dimensional computers.

Outstanding Warrants traces the legacy and history of Ilhan Mimaroglu. The concept of “organized sound” and sound depicting our society and culture are the essence of his life’s work. This CD was produced by George Flynn, Joanie Pallatto and Bradley Parker-Sparrow.

The Southport Composers Series was formed to record and distribute “classical” contemporary solo, chamber, orchestral and electronic works generally not available elsewhere in the recording industry.
