MacMillan: Symphony "Vigil"
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This nearly 50-minute-long symphony forms the third part of a larger work called Tridium--a triptych inspired by the Easter holiday. The first two panels--The World's Ransoming and the Cello Concerto--are also available from the same forces, and it's typical of BIS's commitment to good contemporary music that they would present the entire project complete to interested listeners. MacMillan's general program in all of these works is an increasingly urgent confrontation between "darkness" and "light," and musically speaking he accomplishes this with an often naive musical symbolism (dark low instruments versus bright high ones, with brass fanfares well to the fore) that for some listeners may wear thin well before the symphony finally ends. There's no denying, however, the music's urgency or the sophistication of MacMillan's compositional technique, and this disc will certainly reward anyone who admires the composer, or who enjoyed the first two parts of this ambitious Easter meditation. --David Hurwitz

Best Comprehensive Survey of Canadian Music Available.......1999-01-19
This anthology of three Centuries(!) of Canadian music was assembled by a former producer from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation who now works for Naxos Canada. This producer is also active in the Canadian music world, so he knows whereof he speaks (or selects, as in this case). Liscensing the best performances available from major Canadian and International labels, this is the best collection of, and introudction to, the entire Canadian music scene that I have ever come across. The booklet is informative and is as enjoyable a read as is the 2 CD set is to listen. I doubt there will ever be anything quite like it again. If only NAXOS would now start recording Canadian music on top of the Canadian artists they already record, than they will truly have one of the finest and most comprehensive classical catalogues in the world. As for now, don't pass this one up.

Incredible!!.......2006-07-19
This is simply an amazing recording! James Macmillan is one of the best composers of our time and this recording confirms that fact.
The first work,"The Confession of Isobel Gowdie" was Macmillan's first "hit" which he wrote as a kind of requiem in honor of the woman who was wrongly accused of witchcraft and was burned at the stake. Although the two earlier recordings of this work are great, this one trumps them all. One can debate that it is because the composer himself is the conductor, but I'm not so sure. He is certainly an established conductor in his own right.
Knowing that this is an overall loud piece, he very cleverly has some of the fortissimo moments toned down somewhat so that it doesn't bang your ears too much. Yet he still maintains the power and attitude that makes the piece work. This is just one of many elements that make this performance so good.
The other piece, "Symphony No. 3 (Silence)" is nothing short of remarkable. The subtitle of this symphony is based on a unique concept where the powerful aspects of this work are rooted in the flow of the musical material and the key moments where it stops and then starts again. This concept really comes to play midway through the Symphony where after many minutes of insane musical mayhem, there comes a dramatic pause, the music then starts again with a mirror image of the material we had just heard, albeit with new elements added. At this point we hear a more calm and
slow passage in C giving the sense of a rebirth. Perfectly timed, given the agitated music before. This develops into an incredible climax, giving the feeling of some kind of beutiful epiphany.
My words in describing this recording don't do it justice.
This recording will enlighten your life, whether you be a classical lover or not!
HAUNTING.............2005-04-22
It's been said by Robert Fripp, Miles Davis and a Ekki Sven Tuur that it is the silence that Music frames that we must attune ourselves to, as it is therein that the ineffable speaks to us. In both "The Confession of Isobel Gowdie" and Symphony no 3, "Silence", Scottish Catholic composer James Macmillan presents those brackets in such a clear way that you'll find the Ineffable murmuring from the start and beckoning all through this music.
I find myself moved more by this approach to music than the polyphonous, and often ecstatic articulations of John Taverner, with his Byzantine avocation. Brought up Catholic, you tend to miss that mystery that the Latin hymns brought to liturgical events....
And that's not to suggest that this is Church music. On the contrary, it is almost anti-liturgical, especially the Confession, which is a requiem for a woman who was tortured to confess to all sorts of diabolical acts and then burned at the stake. OJ made a cleaner job of it. In any case, the power of this music rails against a mysogyny that has never quite ever gone away in the Catholic Church, and pehaps Scotland as well. Premiering between Sibelius' Violin Concerto and Beethoven's Fourth, it was greeted enthusiastically. Listen, you'll understand why.
Symphony No. 3 deserves to be regarded as among the truly great symphonies of our time, along with Rautavarra's No. 8, and Henryk Gorecki's Symphony No. 3. It shares that abandonement to the infinite that one must make if one's journey through life is to touch what is most deeply true and utterly incapable of being articulated. I found this piecs haunting me long after I put the disc away.

CBC Records' illuminating series devoted to pre-1955 Glenn Gould concert and broadcast material adds valuable perspective to the Canadian pianist's better-known studio recordings. Gould was not yet 20 when these live Beethoven performances were aired and, thankfully, preserved. Beyond question, the kid sounds like an old master. All of Gould's best qualities are firmly in place: his focused sonority, his atomic sense of rhythm, poise, assurance, and a wide arsenal of articulations. Moreover, the performances are similar in style and intent to Gould's subsequent commercial renditions, but less calculated and machine-like. Oddly, Gould takes the C Major Concerto's Rondo at a gingerly clip that markedly contrasts with the unusually fleet first movement. The latter preserves Gould tearing through Beethoven's unbuttoned cadenza, soon to be abandoned in favor of a contrapuntal concoction of his own (the one he recorded). Although the sonics are constricted and unpredictably balanced, you get more than an inkling of the Toronto Symphony's sterling, expressive string section. The perceptive annotations put these valuable performances in context, and the transfers are effected with care. --Jed Distler

The irreverence of the genius is always uncomfortable for the Status Quo!.......2007-01-26
Glenn Gould left an indelible trace in the memory of several generations and to my mind, will keep exerting an overwhelming influence on new generations of pianists to come. And even, no matter if you don' t agree with him around certain performances, but his level of commitment, bulletproof personal conviction and admirable ideas about the musical interpretation, free of arcane conventionalisms, opened new paths in order to explore new horizons.
These are not transcendental performances, but posses his personal touch and steeled honesty which by itself means something, specially in those ages, in which the homogeneity of the sound seems to be a symptom of refined pianism.

At his best, James MacMillan manages to write music of religious or spiritual inspiration that is never saccharine, tacky, or insipid, and that both challenges and rewards the serious listener. In this respect, he resembles Messaien--though his style is somewhat less difficult--in that he has found a coherent musical language to express his concerns that works first and foremost purely as music. The two works recorded here represent his style well. They form the first two parts of an orchestral trilogy called Tridium, said by the composer to be inspired by the story of Easter. This is heavy stuff, but what makes it all worthwhile is the fact that you don't have to know any of this to enjoy these works as two superb additions to the modern repertoire for English horn and cello, respectively. In this respect The World's Ransoming really stands out, English horn concertos being very rare, and this one being superbly written for the solo instrument (and beautifully performed here). It's always rewarding to see a young composer writing ambitious scores such as these with such confidence, and being supported by excellent performers and a dedicated record label. Definitely worth a listen. --David Hurwitz

Transcendent Modern Music.......2001-12-05
James MacMillan is fast becoming my favorite new composer. These two works are passionate, filled with moments of terror and moments of sublime poetry. Like many composers of the last decades, MacMillan's music is informed by his spirituality, in his case a deep devotion to the Catholic faith. But unlike the holy minimalists, Macmillan is not afraid to embrace the dark and the dissonant, but always with a clear dramatic intent. And there are also moments of almost heart-splitting beauty. The opening lament for the cor anglaise in the World's Ransoming in particular stands out. Though each of these pieces stands on it's own, taken together they are a journey into the darkest moments of the Christian year. If you are looking for a classical version of New Age Spirituality, look elsewhere. But if you want a deep and moving musical and spiritual experience, you can't do better that these works.
The Passion of James MacMillan.......2000-10-02
This CD from BIS presents the first two parts of the orchestral trilogy that MacMillan calls "Triduum." The three parts together explore the actus tragicus of Eastertide and constitute a kind of Bachian "Passion" in purely instrumental terms. Part I of "Triduum" bears the title "The World's Ransoming" and consists of a concerto, in one twenty-minute movement, for cor anglais and orchestra. MacMillan, who is a professing Catholic of deep faith, speaks in a vocabulary which is distinctly modern (showing that he has learned lessons from Messiaen and Stravinsky) while being at the same time highly accessible and dramatic. Much of the thematic interest in "The World's Ransoming" stems from the composer's use of Gregorian chants associated with Easter (the "Pange Lingua" plays an important role). Many of the ecclesiastical motifs that appear in the cor anglais concerto reappear in Parts II and III of "Triduum," as do other motifs that come from MacMillan himself. Part II of the trilogy is a cello concerto. This time there are three distinct movements: "The Mockery," "The Reproaches," and "Dearest Wood and Dearest Iron," the last a reference to the Cross. The cello concerto requires twice the playing time of the cor anglais concerto, and lifts the drama (and the angst) to a higher level. MacMillan further develops the plainsong-motifs and brings in fresh material. The orchestra contributes its full potential and there is much "sonic spectacle" in both works. The "spectacle" is never gratuitous, however; it always contributes to the power of the scene. Both "The World's Ransoming" and the Cello Concerto are symphonic in their conception. We do not achieve catharsis in these two works: That comes only in the symphony, entitled "Vigil," that concludes the trilogy. (It comes on a second CD and must be purchased seperately.) Osmo Vanska, a Finnish conductor, is associated with brilliant modern scores like those of his countryman Kalevi Aho. He leads the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. BIS delivers its usual wall-shaking sound and immaculate acoistic clarity.

One of opera's legendary figures sings lieder........2001-08-17
The Norwegian Kirsten Flagstad was the pre-eminent Wagnerian soprano of the 20th century, but she also gave hundreds of lieder and song recitals, the pick of which bejewel this ravishing double CD. the first offers three complete song-cycles, Grieg's rippling 'Haugtussa', all pastoral maidens and brooks, Flagstad singing as light as a breeze; Wagner's 'Wesendonck-Lieder', that ghost of his masterpiece 'Tristan and Isolde', my favourite lieder cycle - this is the best interpretation I have ever heard, passionate, yearning and, in 'Im Treibhaus' and 'Traume', genuinely spine-tingling. Sibelius' enchanting songs complete the CD, with 'The Maiden's Tryst' unexpectedly lush and romantic.
The second disc of Anglo-American songs may be less demanding, but are no less delightful. Highlights include Landan Ronald's operettish 'O Lovely Night', Frank Bridge's rollicking 'Love Went A-Riding', Bax's hushed 'The White Peace', Elgar's hymn-like tribute to his vocation 'Speak Music', Delius' rapturous 'Love's Philosophy', as well as a tantalisingly muffled 1937 recording of Stephen Foster's 'Old Folks at Home'. There are also no less than four lullabies, which attests to the Victorian hangover on bourgeois tastes in the middle of the last century.
Most of these recordings date from the 1950s, so the sound is relatively clear, and if Flagstad is past her operatic prime, her ability to express intense passion with an imperiously cool technique would put most modern singers to shame. her regular accompanist, Edwin McArthur, is a model of self-effacement, quietly playful and inventive in the background. My only complaint is that, at this price, surely a lyric sheet could have been provided. There is, however, a fascinating biographical piece, detailing, amongst other things, the soprano's dubious wartime conduct.

"Vigil" meets "The Mummy".......2002-10-30
If you like Jerry Goldsmith, you'll love James MacMillan. Excellent orchestration that moves the music along a la your favorite Saturday matinee. If I wasn't told to feel all holy and sacred, I'd say "please pass the popcorn."
Darkness to Light.......2001-12-05
This CD represents the final work in MacMillan's Triduum. The first two pieces are the World's Ransoming, a concerto for Cor Anglaise and Orchesta, and the Cello Concerto. These two works musically describe Maundy Thursday and Good Friday respectively. With this symphony, we reach the Easter Vigil. MacMillan orders his symphony around the central liturgical symbol of the service, the progression from darkness to light. The work begins with low, repeated clusters from low strings, winds and percussion. It concludes with soft clusters from divisi violins, punctuated by the shimmer of antique cymbals. In between, MacMillan plumbs both the depth of the darkness inherant in his theme, and the joy and light which eventually triumphs. This is stunning music, stunningly performed and spectacularly engineered. One of the great works of the last decade of the twentieth century.
MacMillan in Exultation.......2000-10-02
James MacMillan's "Vigil," a symphony in three movements for large orchestra plus brass ensemble, makes up the third "panel" of an orchestral trilogy on the Passion of Jesus Christ. Parts I and II are concerti respectively for cor anglais and cello with orchestra. The cello concerto is nearly twice as long as the cor anglais concerto; the symphony is nearly as long as the two concerti put together. I first made acquaintance with MacMillan's music through his "Veni, Emmanuel," a percussion concerto recorded by Evelyn Glennie. The Easter Triptych ("Triduum") represents MacMillan at a later, far more developed, stage of his musical maturity. "Vigil" is not only the composer's masterpiece to date; it is one of the most important additions to the orchestral repertory of the last decade. (Its date is 1997). The work opens with lower strings, woodwinds, and brass developing very basic material in the bass register. As in Parts I and II of "Triduum," one can occasionally hear how MacMillan has taken over an effect (birdsong, for example) from Messiaen, or some other composer. But his is an original voice. "Vigil" traces a line from the lowest depth to cathartic ecstasy, gradually giving greater prominence to the Gregorian Easter-song "Exultet." The central movement is a demonic scherzo. The extra brass-players, who have been stationed around the orchestra invisibly, come on-stage for the last movement to back up the orchestral brass-players. (Shades of Bruckner's Fifth.) MacMillan is a major figure in contemporary music. Yet "Vigil" (indeed the whole of "Triduum") is so powerful that it is hard to see how its composer will exceed it. (One small complaint: At forty-nine minutes, this CD gives rather short measure. My solution would have been to add on some comments by MacMillan on his music, which is what Hyperion did when they issued Robert Simpson's Ninth Symphony.)

Fresheness and vibrating inspiration!.......2007-02-08
This album is a real national treasure, exhibited with legitimate proud for invaluable efforts of CBC to make us rethink and search for the genesis of this twenty years old pianist, owner of an engaging musicality and even arrogant display of expressive vitality and beating phrasing.
His strong musical personality blends aristocracy and irreverence, in the light of a pureness of interpretation of renovated splendor. When you listen his Bach, you will be conveyed immediate to a new musical horizon, achieved just for the bulletproof conviction and absolute honest as artist.
The Concerto on D minor is simply peerless. But the interpretative freshness of his Italian Concerto, the serene vision of Bach' s Inventions and the bewitching lyricism of the Partita No. 5 make of this CD an absolute must, not for the numerous hard fans of G.G: but an anthological release for all those who knew about him and even for just who have not dared to listen him.
A musical pearl, without reserves.

...Promising start.......2002-08-08
This extraordinary work from one of Britian's most promising composers had a unlikely start in it's premeir. It was placed between Beethoven's Fourth Symphony and Sibelius Violin Concerto at the London Promenade Concert 1990. It seemed like an odd choice giving the reasons that "The Confessions Of Isobel Gowdie" had only been written the previous year and very little had been known of James Macmillan at that point. Isobel Gowdie scored a triumph for MacMillan, the impact on the audience was far wider than expected.
"The Confession Of Isobel Gowdie" draws its inspiration on the 1662 execution of Isobel Gowdie, who had confessed herself into being a witch after being undescribable tortured. This was the time of the English Reformation and witch hunting was a daily occurrence, executions were cheered on. The reasons for a conviction could be something totally absurd. "The Confessions of Isobel Gowdie" has a Stravinsky "The Rite Of Spring" approach that begins slowly than escalates into a sudden burst of energy. The whole work is divided into musical quotes, a Scottish ballad (The Cruel Mother), a Gregorian chant (Lux aeterna). The Lux aeterna section of the work intensifies with trombones and percussions that become quite erratic, the illusion of ritual barbarism is conjured up.
Tryst, a longer work but smaller in scale was written the year before, 1989. It grew from life out of a violin and piano composition called "After The Tryst" based upon William Sontar's love poem. It is again one continous movement broken up in five sections which center upon faith, love and hope. The musical pattern is much the same as "The Confession Of Isobel Gowdie" swirling winds of sounds that cascade into unformular territory, a territory that draws you into a magnetic field. Tryst begins violently that transends into a slow mediation in the middle and back again to being violent at the end.
"The Confession Of Isobel Gowdie/ Tryst" on the Koch label was conducted by Jerzy Maksymiuk with the BBC Scottish Orchestra, the same very person and orchestra that performed "The Confession Of Isobel Gowdie" at the London Promenade.
One major problem I had with the disc, not so much with the performance or the music itself...is that Koch elected to leave each work as single tracks, two tracks in total and not clearly divide the works up into their respected sections as they were intended for.
James Macmillan may appear to some as new music and a bit of a challenge, "The Confession Of Isobel Gowdie/Tryst" to me is his easiest to listen to, your transported into a dark age that as a whole the music is supposingly representing.
